Most of the younger generation may not know life before the MP3 player, and especially the Apple iPod. There are enough people though who remember life before the digital age, and today we have news of Apple iPod jealousy as it finishes below the Sony Walkman in a poll of great inventions

The Telegraph is reporting that a T3 survey amongst its readers asked what they think is the best technology invention in the last fifty years. The original cassette tape Sony Walkman finished second overall, with the Apple iPhone finishing top in the poll. Making up the top three was the Apple iPod, but it is the Walkman that will be fondly remembered by many.

It was first introduced to the world in 1979, and really became big business during the 1980s as music lovers could finally enjoy their music while on the go. It did have its problems though as many would have experienced a tangled tape at some time or another.

Compared to modern MP3 players users could probably only store between 25 and 30 songs on a typical ninety minute tape. Surprisingly the device only ceased production last year in late October, and still had some features even iPod owners would be jealous of. There were some models that had twin headphone sockets, and batteries could easily be replaced once they were spent.

The unit spawned many copies from various other companies and there will undoubtedly be many examples still being used today. What would be your choice of the best technology invention over the last fifty years?

With all the iPhone 5 rumors that we have heard about so far, this has got to be amongst the most exciting yet as we have news of a concept design courtesy of Concept-Phones, which adds a splash of color to the notorious black or white design for the iPhone we have seen until now. Though it is highly unlikely the final product would actually receive a makeover like this, there is no denying that these devices look very smart indeed.

The man behind these concepts is Antoine Brieux, who has produced concepts in the past that have got the imagination going crazy, just as his must be to produce such quality designs. Amongst his work is the likes of the HTC Tube Tablet, which combines a smartphone and a tablet together and the HTC Tube which seemingly integrates all the devices you’d need into one device.

The designer has also produced an alternative iPhone 5 concept that keeps with the traditional color, more likely what Apple will go with for their final product. Despite the tradition with the iPhone colors Apple have dabbled with color in one of their other devices before, like the iPod, so the use of color on another device such as the iPhone doesn’t seem too unrealistic.

If you have a look at the colorful iPhone 5G concepts above you will notice a slight resemblance to a design that is actually being produced at the moment by none other than Nokia with their N9, a MeeGo OS smartphone that also comes in several vibrant colors. Though the looks of a device do not affect performance I personally do not see the harm in providing a color choice, if anything it makes them look slightly less business like which could appeal to more people, and adds an element of personality to an otherwise dull looking device.

As for the rest of the design from Brieux, the layout of his iPhone 5G is pretty much the same as the iPhones we’ve already seen. The Gorilla Glass face with black matte on the back, same home button, two speaker grills, iPod dock at the bottom, on the back a camera with LED flash, headphone jack on top, power button, screen lock and volume controls also included.

So would you buy an iPhone like this? Do you think there should be a color choice in future?

The iPod is normally due each September, but with iOS 5 coming at this time does the iPod have enough glamour to be the launch pad for iOS 5? We think not, it will take something much more like the iPhone 5. There have been rumors in the past that a new iPod is coming, but is there really a market for it anymore?

This would be a shame if Apple were to discontinue the iPod, as this was considered to be the moment when the company found their glory once again. The original iPod was like the first-gen iPhone, as they were both game changers. The iPod blew the competition out of the water, as did the iPhone. Apple could make a few improvements to the iPod and release it a little later than September, releasing it at the same time as the iPhone 5 or iOS 5 would be a huge mistake, and they know it.

The perfect time for the launch of the 2011 iPod would be in the build-up to the holiday season, but Black Friday would be better, with Apple offering one of their small incentives. This could be a great opportunity for Apple, but it is worrying to think that the iPod would need to be released in a time when we know that sales are inflated.

This is a completely different story to the iPhone 5, it will not need any glamor or gimmicks, no matter what time of the year it gets released it will sell in the tens of millions. Speaking of that release date, there is still much confusion over this. We recently said that an issue with the new processor could delay the launch of the fifth-generation iPhone until October.

However, CRAVE does not agree, and after looking at all the data believes that they now have a rough release date, and that would be September 17, 2011. The article was from June, and cannot believe that we missed it but felt that you needed to have a read, as the way that they came up with the date was very clever.

That date makes sense, and all these other dates, such as August or October does not add up. Every September Apple holds an event to launch new devices, last year it was a new iPod Touch and Apple TV. So it is the logical choice to use this event to launch their biggest product, the iPhone 5.

The recent earthquake in Japan that saw a tsunami hit the coast of Japan has already had an effect on a number of product supplies. We are now hearing that there are Apple supply chain shortages, which has started to cause iPod problems. The popular media device uses lithium-ion batteries, and it is this part that has been affected.

The chemical used in the battery is made by Kureha, who supplies 70 percent to the world market had to close its plant, as a direct result of the tsunami and earthquake. WSJ learned from Bloomberg that the only way in which companies like this can survive is if they have more overseas operations, something that Kureha has already been looking into.

You have to wonder why other Apple productions have not been affected, although there were rumors that iPad 2 delays were a direct result of the disaster – which has since been rubbished by Apple. There were also delays of the original iPad when it was launched last year, so we have to assume that it is just that demand is higher than current stock.

The Apple iPod is not the first and will not be the last device to be affected by the earthquake in Japan. We also reported yesterday that production of cars were also hit hard, with the top three Japanese car makers taking the brunt of it.

How long will it be before Japan is fully able to recover from the devastation?

Another accessory has appeared on the scene, this time for the iPhone and it’s just in time for Christmas. There is now the iPig “Cool” docking station, it looks like a little pig wearing sun glasses and is being brought to you by Speakal and.

The iPig has an infra-red motion sensor control on it, they claim in their video for the product that this is the worlds first IR Sensor Control iPod Docking Speaker System. It is also battery powered so it’s portable.

The sensors are placed around the iPig in different locations and when it picks up movement activates the function for that specific sensor, this includes all the normal functions of play, pause, forwards backwards and volume up and down. If you want to see it in action then there’s a video demonstration available over at Speakal.com.

On to the specs of the device, it can play and charge all iPods with dock connections it can also work in conjunction with all iPhones including the iPhone 4. it has a rechargeable lithium battery that you get about 8 hours of use out of. There is a built in 15W sub and bass reflex system, a remote control and it can play other media devices as well that have a 3.5mm connection.

The price of the iPig is around the $150 marker but this could make an ideal gift for Christmas. This isn’t the only product that Speakal make, they also have the iPanda, iBoo, miSoccer and the iCrystal, all of which are available over on the official site by clicking here.

Just as planned, Apple unveiled the 4th-generation iPod Touch device to the world at their special media event today. The new iPod Touch has iPhone 4 features as expected, the biggest being a front-facing camera and Facetime video chat support.

The new device will be thinner than the previous model, but will retain the curved back rather than sport a new flat back like the iPhone 4. Other features include a Retina Display screen, A4 chip (same as iPhone 4), rear camera with HD video recording, and the Apple Game Center.

You’ll be pleased to know that the new iPod Touch will come with iOS 4.1, and is already available to pre-order now. It will be released sometime next week along with iOS 4.1, and prices seem pretty reasonable too.

You’ll be able to pick up the iPod Touch in three varieties – either a 8GB ($229), 32GB model ($299) or a whopping 64GB version for $399. We almost forgot to tell you that you’ll be able to have video chats with iPhone 4 users too – great idea we have to say.

What are your thoughts on the new iPod Touch? Look forward to a full review soon.
