One advantage that the iOS platform has over Android is the fact updates are normally released at the same time, which stops the fragmentation that the Android platform often sees. For one reason or another though not every iOS user updates to the latest operating system released by Apple. We now have news of owner frustration as iOS devices running 3.1.3 are blocked from the App Store.

SlashGear are reporting that users that still have the older version of iOS on their devices have found themselves blocked from getting software from the App Store. Many owners have been complaining about the situation, with no official fix on route.

Users have taken to the Apple support forums and are affecting iPhone’s and iPod Touches still running iOS 3.1.3. They are unable to download free or paid apps, rate apps, view official screenshots, and send details to others by using the tell a friend option.

The issue first come to light after a December 16th update that left owners only being able to update already installed applications, without being able purchase any new ones. The timing of the problems has come at a bad time as we fast approaching the holiday shutdown. App Store staff begin an eight day break from this coming Thursday, which will mean no new apps are added and charts are frozen.

For any developers that are fortunate enough to get their apps in the charts in time can mean some big rewards. This often leads to some cut price apps being offered and could lead to some users with 3.1.3 missing out. They could always purchase them via iTunes and then sync them to their device. Currently Apple hasn’t acknowledged the problems with the older iOS software.

Have you had any issues if you still run iOS 3.1.3?

Since the iPhone 4S was released many users have enjoyed using the new Siri voice control feature. Despite some early concerns surrounding accents in certain regions it has been pretty well received so far. We told you recently that the co-founder of the company responsible for Siri had left Apple, and now we have news that an iPod Touch has been hacked to run Siri.

The software is only supposed to officially run on the iPhone 4S, but Engadget are reporting that a hack has managed to get it to work on an iPod Touch. This follows similar hacks to get the software working on the iPad and an iPhone 4.

There are some issues with these hacks though as Apple’s servers won’t recognize the feature working on other devices besides the iPhone 4S. This will basically mean the feature not working how it was designed to. It does mean though that Apple could have got it working on various devices, but the company probably held it back because of the more powerful processor the iPhone 4S has.

Surely there is no reason for it not to work officially on the iPad 2 or maybe even the iPhone 4. It may come in a future iOS update, but users of the iPod Touch would lose out though. Below you can see a video of the Siri feature in action on the iPod Touch.

There are still many users complaining of the battery life the iPhone 4S has provided, and running features such as Siri can’t be helping. Do you use Siri much on your iPhone 4S?

As many of you will have heard by now, the Apple event, Let’s Talk iPhone, which occurred last night, marked the announcement of the company’s iPhone 4S. During the event the specs of the new device were discussed, at which point it was also revealed that games for the device were able to perform up to seven times faster than the previous device.

Another interesting discussion which occurred was the popularity of the iPod Touch, not only as a music player but as a portable gaming device. The man in charge of carrying on Steve Jobs’ legacy and new CEO of Apple, Tim Cook, stated that ‘the iPod Touch had become the world’s most popular portable gaming device.’

While this statement came seemingly out of nowhere, no evidence was presented in order to back it up either. According to Edge in order for the statement to be true, the company would have needed to have sold around 150 million iPod Touches to have surpassed the achievements of the Nintendo DS units so far.

The Nintendo handset’s year of sales ending March 31st 2010, saw the total number of units sold reach 128.9 million. Exactly one year later on 17.52 million more units were sold bringing the lifetime sales total to just short of 150 million.

Whether this statement is true or not remains to be seen, but what is evident is that portable gaming is becoming increasingly popular with more and more casual games being purchased in favor of console games. The fact that the new iPhone 4S graphics are now seven times faster means gamers will be targeting the device as they will be getting more for their money, as opposed to buying a Nintendo DS which restricts users to just gaming.

What do you think of gaming on portable devices such as the iPod Touch? Do you prefer it to console gaming?

There were no real surprises during Apple’s keynote yesterday, which you can see for yourself here. The iPhone 4S, iPod Nano and the iPod touch are all only minor upgrades to what we already have, but there are some key features to the 5th generation touch that could persuade you to get one, and the price is one of them.

You have to love how Apple tries to sell something, by saying that the new iPod touch takes “fun to the next level.” Well, if they mean that it now comes in white, then they need to look up what the word fun actually means? They try to sell us the idea that iOS 5 will greatly improve things, but the current model will also get this upgrade.

The differences with the new iPod touch are so small that they are hard to spot, as we said above, it’s all in the software. For those who currently have a 2010 touch, then we would say do not bother with the upgrade. However, if you have an older model or not one at all, then now is the best time to upgrade.

The reason we say this is because Apple has reduced the price on these; the 16GB will cost $199, 32GB $299 and the new 64GB version will set you back $399. You might wonder why you would want to buy the touch, when the iPhone 4S is not that much further out of reach? Well the new touch will make use of the message feature in iOS 5, so if you are within a wireless network, you can then speak to your friends or family, although they will need to have an iPhone running the new software as well.

With about three hours to go until the “Let’s Talk iPhone” Apple event, we thought we would look at expectations, not only with the handset but also iOS 5, iCloud and the iPod Touch. Now we know that the first three will be discussed, but we are still uncertain on the latter. However, some of us may have lost sight at just how big of a deal iCloud is.

First of all there is iOS 5, we know for certain that this new mobile operating system is coming, but we still do not have a confirmed release date. We do not expect Tim Cook and his team to share any more feature details, just that all-important release date. For those who are not going to upgrade to the new iPhone, then iOS 5 will be more important to them, as it will make the iPhone an even better handset.

iCloud to us is the most important service, as this will mean that Apple has finally done what we have been waiting for, and that is breaking the iPhone away from the shackles of a computer. This will now mean that future versions of iOS will be made available via OTA. Not only that, the moment that you do something on one iOS device, then it will be made available to all your other portable Apple devices, such as an iPad.

Then we have that all-important new handset, which will either be called the iPhone 4S or 5. There are suggestions that it will just be a minor spec bump, but we cannot ignore the thousands of cases that are being made, all of them will fit a larger iPhone design. Maybe there is even plans for two models, we will just have to wait and see.

Finally let’s talk iPod Touch. This should have seen an upgrade last month, but we heard nothing. Now there is the worry that Apple could cancel their PMP and go with a cheaper iPhone to fill the void. You have to love all the speculation that surrounds these Apple events, talk about free advertising for the company.

You wouldn’t think there would be a new iPod touch 5G at the Apple event in two days, especially considering Apple named the invites with “iPhone” and not “iPod”. So we know for sure they want to talk about the iPhone 5/4S, but what about other products and services like iCloud, and a new iPod device?

We spoke about rumors of a new touchscreen home key back in April of this year, and the possibility of a white 5th generation iPod touch appearing at Tuesday’s press conference with just a few changes, although is this what the users want? We looked at the feedback from PR readers and it seems most of you would like an upgrade and have voiced your opinions on what iPod Touch 5G features are needed.

Some of you made a few predictions for the next iPod, which include the device being smaller this year and featuring an A5 processor with increased RAM, and 1080p video recording. One of the most wanted features is “3G”, although some people quickly point out this will help Apple lose sales of the iPhone.

So no matter how crazy some of the wanted features are, these are the ones you asked for so far: 3G Internet, a larger display, 8PM camera, a faster processor, 4G, ability to make free phone calls, free Internet access, a cheaper price, FM radio like on the Nano, and more battery life when using video. It seems that a lot of people want all that they expect on the iPhone 5, but without the phone.

When do you think Apple will release the iPod touch 5G? And are any features missing from what’s mentioned above, which you want?

The world now knows there will be a press event on October 4th with Apple that’s been called “let’s talk iPhone”. Leading up to this confirmation we have had months of speculation and rumor about the next version of the iPhone. Now we can tell you that new iPod Touches and iPhone 4s appear on Apple’s system, but no iPhone 5.

Already today we have had reports that the iPod Classic and Shuffle may be coming to the end of their shelf life. But the iPod Touch is still the jewel in Apple’s iPod range, and three new models have appeared on the company’s internal inventory system. According to 9To5Mac they have the codename N81A.

N81 is the codename for the black version of the iPod Touch 4G, so the A is likely to be for the new white versions of the device. It has been reported for a while now that a white iPod Touch could be on its way, and now this looks to be happening. If there are no more codes added for the iPod Touch it could mean there will be no other changes to the range.

There is also two new iPhone SKUs that have appeared on the system and it seems these are tweaked iPhone 4s. The codename for these is N90A and means only slight changes from the iPhone 4 that is N90. This new model could be the 8GB version that has been rumored to be coming before, and the two model numbers could be for the white and black models.

Its early days yet but what if there is no iPhone 5 for now and Apple are only going to reveal a slightly modified iPhone 4 with the focus on iOS 5? This will probably not be the case and we will see an all ne iPhone 5 next week. Will you be disappointed if we only see an updated iPhone 4 at Apple’s event?

The big Apple release that many consumers are waiting for is the launch of the iPhone 5. The company is thought to be holding an event early next month the showcase the device, and is also thought to be launching a refresh to the iPod range. There is more news of a white iPod Touch 5G on route with some small tweaks.

According to an article on MacRumors the previous reports that a white version of the device will be made available are true, but other than that there won’t be much else different with the device. Sources are claiming there will be only minor changes to the hardware of the device.

These are claimed to include the addition of an oleophobic coating on the screen, and also a redesigned ambient light sensor. Other than that the device is thought to be exactly the same as last year’s model. This fits in with previous reports by Ming-Chi Kuo, analyst with Concord Securities.

There were white iPod Touch parts seen back in July that were leaked online, which at the time indicated there would be no major differences to the devices chassis. If these latest rumors are true it would end the speculation of a 3G capable device being launched this year.

Some have also claimed the new iPod Touch would share the new form factor that is rumored for the iPhone 5, but this doesn’t look the case now. There have been some people who have wondered if the iPod Touch would be eventually phased out, as it shares most of the features of the iPhone except the ability to make calls.

Not everyone though can afford or want an iPhone, but the iPod Touch remains one of the best portable media players currently available. Will you be disappointed if the iPod Touch doesn’t get much of a refresh this year?

Normally this time of year we are waiting to see what Apple is going to do next with its range of iPods at its annual fall event. This time round all the focus is on the next iPhone and what that may bring, but today we have rumors that a 3G capable iPod Touch is to coincide with the iPhone 5 launch.

Redmond Pie is reporting that sources are suggesting that the next iPod Touch will have full 3G connectivity. Currently the iPod Touch has a Wi-Fi chip that is great when there is a Wi-Fi connection available, but as more services needs constant internet access it becomes a problem.

The upcoming iCloud feature of iOS 5 has features that will require constant connection to the internet and Apple’s servers. Since the device first become available many have seen it as an iPhone without the ability to actually make calls. This isn’t likely to change though even with the addition of a 3G chip, and will be exclusively for data just as it is in the 3G iPad.

Apple is reportedly talking to US carriers about monthly data plans that don’t have a contract. This is so users can cancel the service at anytime without getting any termination fees. There could be the possibility that with a few unofficial tweaks, calls and SMS may be enabled. This has already been done on the 3G iPad so may be used for the iPod Touch as well.

It is thought there will be a Wi-Fi only version available as well, and the device is set to look the same as the current model. We have already reported of the chance there could be a white version of the device this time round. But would Apple even ditch the device for a cheaper iPhone 4 that has been rumored for a while now?

Time will tell and we should only be a couple of weeks away now from hearing about the iPhone 5 and iPod range. Would you like to see a 3G capable iPod Touch?

With no new iPhone coming out in its usual summer release time frame, many have looked to September for when Apple will show off their next version of the device. Recently we have seen more speculation of Apple bringing out two handsets around September. Today we have news that an Apple media event is rumored for September 7th, but will it be for the iPhone 5 or iPod?

Normally Apple holds their fall media events during the first part of September, with last year’s taking place on the 1st of the month. Last year the company introduced a range of new iPod models, but this time around it is widely believed the company may also be introducing the iPhone 5. Now MacRumors are reporting that this year’s event will take place on the 7th according to a previously reliable source.

Suppliers to Apple are rumored to begin shipping units of the device sometime during September, but some quarters think it may not be until October. Apple may well showcase the new iPhone at the media event, with a release the following month.

Apple may announce the handset and have it quickly available for consumers though, which was the case with the iPad 2. With the iPod Touch it is not thought the company will make many changes to the device except the introduction of a white version. There have been previous rumors that Apple may discontinue the iPod Classic, but surely they will have something special lined up for the device as it celebrates its tenth anniversary.

The device was also responsible for putting Apple back on the map, and laid down the foundations for the success Apple now sees. What most people will be hoping to see at any event though is the iPhone 5. There are many consumers who still own an iPhone 3GS and have been holding out for the next iPhone.

The alleged date for the media event is less than a month away, so if correct it won’t be long before Apple start sending out invites to the press. Will you get the next iPhone when it is released?
