A few days ago we had reports that the iPod Classic and iPod Shuffle could be about to be killed off by Apple. Now we have more news that looks like the iPod Classic could be doomed to the history books, as the company focuses on other devices.

Following previous rumors about the life of the Classic, AppleInsider are now reporting that Apple has removed the section of the iTunes Store that was for click-wheel games. Before now users had the capability to link to iPod Click Wheel Games option from the drop down menu. This has now disappeared and could be a further hint the device is being discontinued after ten years.

The device was responsible for starting Apple on its route to the success it enjoys today, and has used the same click wheel and basic design throughout its lifespan. The original model had the game Brick, which was developed by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

The device went on to gain a color screen and more functionality, which led to more games being added. The latest model comes with iQuiz, Klondike, and Vortex. The company began selling games for the device in 2006 with even the likes of Disney offering titles. These were priced at $7.49 and use the touch-sensitive wheel on the Classic.

There were a total of around fifty games available for the device via iTunes, but it could have been more if Apple allowed the third-party software development kit to be available. The iPod Touch is thought to mainly be the same this year except of the addition of a white finish.

Do you think the iPod Classic has a future?

We now know for sure when Apple will be holding their event for the next iPhone. Normally this is the time of year that Apple show case improvements to its iPod range for the next year. But could we be saying rip to the iPod Classic and Shuffle this year?

There are new reports surfacing that Apple could be about to kill off the iPod Classic after a ten year product run. The iPod Shuffle is also rumored to be getting the axe as the company wants a multi-touch lineup for its iPod range. TUAW are reporting they have been sitting on some information regarding the devices for a while now.

They decided to reveal what they knew following another report over at Cnet saying that Apple might be going to “stick a fork in the iPod”. It is thought that Apple is looking to end the type of hard drive that is used in the Classic, as the company favors flash based options.

This is not the first time that there have been rumors of the iPod Classic being discontinued by Apple. Whether they decide to do it on the devices tenth anniversary remains to be seen, as the device was responsible for putting the company back on the map and allowed them to grow to what we know today.

It is thought the iPod Touch may be only getting some minor cosmetic changes that include a white color scheme. There have been rumors though that the device may get 3G capability, which would be a welcome feature for many. Some have suggested that eventually Apple could kill off the iPod range altogether, but this doesn’t make sense as not everyone can afford an iPhone.

Do you think the iPod Classic and the Shuffle will be discontinued?

There seems to be much confusion over the possibility of the 2011 iPod Classic, as we recently reported that the device could be discontinued before WWDC. However, there are a number of rumors going round that Apple could still offer a refresh due to it still being the “5th most popular media player” last year.

Who would have thought that such an aging device would still be in the top five in 2010? We know that the device looks old compared to the likes of the iPod Touch, but having a huge range will certainly help Apple in sales in the long run. Apple does not have as many products as fans would hope, so keeping the iPod Classic is important.

It was AppleInsider who learned from NPD of these sales results, it was the black version of the device that came out on top from the range, the silver model was down in 10th place. There are a number of ways where Apple can update the range, and it is the hard drive that needs the attention, it needs to go to Flash storage like the Touch and Nano.

What we found interesting about the NPD tracking Service is how all but one device in the top ten were Apple. This is certainly one in the eye for other media player makers.

The only way that we believe that Apple would discontinue the iPod Classic is that they would drop the price of the Touch by a huge margin – that’s not going to happen. We believe that a refresh is coming, but when is another question.

The original iPod first came out in October 2001, when Apple gave us “1,000 songs in your pocket”. The device has seen six different variations, and since the 5th generation has been known as the Classic. Now the device may be dropped or updated soon, as stock levels of the device seem to be low.

An article by Lucy on AppleBitch.com is reporting that a number of retailers shipping times have lengthened recently. Last week the Apple Store was showing that silver iPod Classic would ship in 24 hours; this is now one to three days. Best Buy website is stating the Classic is backordered for one to two weeks, Amazon and Target has them backordered for two to four weeks.

The low stock levels only seem to be affecting the silver model, and not the darker versions. Rumors of an update have been going on for a while, with many expecting an update back in September. Toshiba recently announced a new line of 1.8” hard drives, and has led others to believe these could be included in the next generation of iPod Classic.

Apple has recently been moving away from hard drives in its mobile devices and using flash memory, this was also the case in the recently updated MacBook Air. The most recent update saw the device getting 160GB of memory; this is the only model of Classic available. With the annual WWDC event only four months away we could see the iPod Classic get a refresh then. At the time of writing shipping times have gone back to 24 hours on the Apple Store.

Would you like to see a new generation of iPod Classic, or is it time for the product to be discontinued?
