The iPhone / iPad ‘Spirit’ jailbreak is now available for those who wish to take the plunge and give it a go. The iPhone OS jailbreak has been discussed on a number of occasions over the last few weeks, so has the final release been worth all the hype and wait?

Engadget explains that the jailbreak is untethered and will work on activated iPhones running OS versions 3.1.2, 3.1.3, and 3.2. If you are an owner of the iPad, then you can also run the jailbreak – just remember that the software is still in beta so you may have to restore the tablet if things go wrong.

There are those who would consider this worth the hassle if they can get the iPhone / iPad ‘Spirit’ jailbreak to work correctly. If you are using a tethered jailbreak now then you will need to restore your smartphone to run Sprit. More details on this can be found over on spiritjb.com

AdMob has been looking at the latest Mobile Metrics Report figures for smartphones covering the last 12 months and shows that the smartphone market is still dominated by Apple, with Google beginning to close the gap. If we just take a brief look at those figures, it shows that iPhone OS still dominates rivals Android, webOS, RIM and WinMo.

Figures show that smartphone traffic grew by 193 percent in the last year, this has accounted for half the traffic on AdMob’s network. Traffic from standard cell phones has now started to drop – showing that the smartphone is becoming the new mobile.

This time last year the iPhone had 55 percent of the market share, this has now dropped – but still has almost a 50 percent share. Android is now playing catch-up and is doing it slowly – let us not lose sight that Apple has one handset, with Google many more.

Android can thank this increase to the Motorola Droid, and the news of the HTC EVO 4G will certainly help increase Android market share. As for the others, we can see Palm and its webOS slowly increasing as the Pre and Pixi Plus is now available on all networks.

For a closer look at the report visit Arstechnica

For years we have assumed that the greatest enemy of the Mac was Microsoft Windows, but Apple may have to look a little closer to home. It has been suggested that the iPhone OS-based iPad could be the product that kills of the Mac and not a rival.

We know that the iPad can be used on the go, but most people will go for the cheaper Wi-Fi option – making this a more at home device, this is when things get more difficult for Apple. Let us remember that Mac supports Flash, the iPad does not. However, if Apple has their way HTML 5 will become the standard – YouTube has already started offering support.

PC Mag is looking at the bigger picture – stating that the iPad is just one of many devices that will run on iPhone OS. Apple will do what they can to take a share from Windows – that means that we will see mini-PCs running iPhone OS. If this were to happen – then Mac could slowly fade away in favor of a smoother more controlled operating system.

The release of the iPad is just around the corner – so why has Apple launched the new IPhone OS SDK 3.2 Beta 4? We know that the new Software Development Kit comes with a host of new tools and fixes; maybe it was this that delayed the launch of the tablet device.

We only have three days before you can pre-order the iPad, so Apple are cutting things a bit fine. Not much is known about what has changed with IPhone OS SDK 3.2 Beta 4 – we will offer more information once we get it.

Looking back at past SDK updates we can be certain that there will be some new goodies – but it is iPhone OS 4.0 that we are all waiting on. According to Examiner, they expect to see the new operating system as early as June at Apple’s WWDC.

If you are a developer and you have information about what updates IPhone OS SDK 3.2 Beta 4 has – please let us know.

Today has seen the release of the new iPhone OS 3.1.3; the update offers a number of new features including a battery fix. This firmware update is not only for Apple’s smartphone but also for their iPod Touch as well, and offers improved accuracy for battery level reporting.

The iPhone OS 3.1.3 Update also resolves the issue with third-party applications, as you know some would not launch at all. There has also been a bug fix, like the one when applications crash when running the Japanese Kana keyboard.

Some of the most important updates are the ones that you do not see; these are security updates and had affected the CoreAudio, ImageIO, Recovery Mode and WebKit.

The last update was back in October, but we wonder when we will get to see iPhone OS 3.2?

The update was launched last week for developers to use when working on new applications for the upcoming iPad. The update will offer a number of screen enhancements, which you can learn more about from Apple Insider.
