Apple’s methods of approving apps for its App Store have always come in for some criticism. One of the main worries was that Apple would reject apps as they offered similar functions to those that the company already had, or were planning to design into the iPhone OS.

Ryan Faas from Computerworld.com is asking if app developers are better to use Apple’s own development tools or create a web-based app. Apple have recently tightened their grip on app development by blocking the use of any software tools other then Apple’s own.

The new rules were aimed mainly at Adobe’s Flash, but also hit RunRev who were planning to offer a HyperCard-like tool which would allow for easy and quick app development.

The story goes on weighing up all the pros and cons for app developers to choose their preferred option in designing and releasing apps. Use the link above to read the full story.

Navigon are celebrating tomorrows WWDC and the new iPhone OS 4, with some special discounts on their MyRegion app. You can get the app half price for $14.99 from June 1-11, 2010, with extra maps costing $9.99.

Rene Ritchie from TiPB.com is reporting that they are also celebrating the new Background Location feature that will be found in the new OS 4. This new feature will allow users to update and access their location without having to run applications like LOOPT.

MyRegion lets users pick the map regions they need, and allows them to upgrade and purchase additional maps from within the app itself. This is great for when you are on the go and might need some extra navigation choices.

The navigation app allows for a premium service, but at a low price. It comes with functions such as Google Local Search, Lane Assistant Pro, Navigon MyRoutes, Reality View Pro, and much more.

Are you looking forward to iPhone OS 4.0, and the new background location feature? What do you expect from WWDC 2010?

Back at the beginning of April we were treated to the Apple iPhone OS 4.0 preview event, and most will agree the jump from version 3 to 4 is much bigger than 2 to 3. It comes as no surprise that some of the new upcoming features have been in use on other platforms for some time now – but Apple has a way of coming late to the party and still doing better than all the old partygoers.

We still do not have a specific release date for the new software, but we know it will be this summer – best guess would be towards the end of June. Like iPhone OS 3.0, 4.0 will come with 100 new features, but these will be more useful. One of the most anticipated features from the upcoming firmware update is true multitasking – this alone has great expectations. We have been advised that this new feature will not run on older iPhone models, which as we know will not go down too well with those who are unable to purchase a newer version of the iPhone.

Looking back at a recap of our previous posts we start to get an image at just how special iPhone OS 4.0 will be. These updates include: Multitasking, Homescreen/Customization/Categorization, Enhanced Mail, iBooks, Enterprise, Game Center and iAd. These are just the ones we know of, we can expect to learn of some of the other features at WWDC 2010 in a couple of weeks time.

Google knew that they had to offer a counter-attack to Apple after its announcement of iPhone OS 4.0. The search engine giant did not disappoint with the unveiling of Android OS 2.2 Froyo. If you put the latter with the likes of the HTC Droid Incredible then the 3GS running iPhone OS 3.0 has no chance, but put the 4G with iPhone OS 4.0 and it is a totally different story.

We know that Google’s mobile OS is one of the best on the market, but the launch of iPhone OS 4.0 will change all of that. However, all is not lost and there is another contender to Apple’s latest mobile OS – Android 3.0. The software is a long way off, but when it comes we can expect something special.

There are those who believe that Android 3.0 Gingerbread will be released before the year is out – but that is being a little optimistic. Although we can rest assured that Google will study the good and the bad points of iPhone OS 4.0 and than makes the necessary adjustments to its own mobile operating system.

In a recent article we showed you some of the first screenshots of Gingerbread, and we can tell you that it is the best looking Android interface yet.

Which Android OS do you think will be a contender for iPhone OS 4.0 – 2.2 or 3.0?

According to the International Business Times it seems as if Apple’s target release date for iPhone OS 4.0 is June 7th, we have no official confirmation of this, however IBT’s article suggests that this release rumor came from Apple’s iPhone strategic partner Foxconn.

Details regarding the upcoming mobile OS are beginning to emerge thanks to several Beta versions which have been in developers hands, these Beta versions prove that the proper release shouldn’t be too far away.

As we hear of more solid information regarding iPhone OS 4.0 and a release date we will keep you posted, if you would like to read more on this topic and even see a hands-on video with iPhone OS 4.0 (beta) check out the source link below.

As reported from Redmond Pie, users are now greeted with a stylish ‘circular’ animation when switching between various applications using the new multitasking tab on the bottom of the screen.

Just watch as the user switches from the settings menu to the world clock menu, see the animation slowed down? As you can see, this animation doesnt occur everytime you switch between apps, or when you select apps from the homescreen.

It will be interesting to see what other delights unfold within Beta 2 for the iPhone OS 4.0. Watch the video below and let us know your thoughts on this.

A few weeks ago Apple unveiled to the world its preview of the iPhone OS 4.0, which was made available to devs on the same day. Now the new beta 2 and SDK is ready for download and with it comes a range of fixes for issues that developers experienced with the beta 1.

Softpedia has learned from a user on the Modmyi forum who has already downloaded the new version of iPhone OS 4.0 and said that there is a cool transition with app switching, he also notes that things seem much smoother than the previous version.

Those thinking of upgrading from beta 1 to beta 2 have been warned; this is because iTunes 9.1 currently offers no support for folder syncing. Those wishing to upgrade will need to uninstall Apple Application and Mobile Device Support before installing to the latest version of this SDK.

There are still a few bugs in beta 2, photos.app is disarranged and camera.app is still a complete mess. But that is what these beta tests are for, to iron out all of these bugs.

Apple offered us a preview of iPhone OS 4.0 just over a week ago and already a jailbreak is ready for developers to download. The jailbreak app is called redsn0w 0.9.5 beta and is the real deal, unlike some of the other claims made over the past few days.

This beta release will now allow devs to prepare for the summer release of Apple iPhone OS 4.0 on the iPhone 3G and not the iPad. Although Engadget does say that it is early days so we could see a iPad jailbreak for the new OS soon.

If you rely on a carrier unlock then you had best stay clear of this jailbreak, this beta download will only work if you have stock 4.0beta1 IPSW from Apple. If you already have IPSW installed, then you would have already lost the carrier unlock. For more details on this visit the iPhone Dev Team

Please remember, this download is only for Devs

As the SDK for iPhone OS 4.0 continues to reveal more interesting information about upcoming features, it has been confirmed that Apple will be removing the ‘rate-on-delete’ feature for their apps within OS 4.0.

Previously, iPhones owners were greeted with a pop up menu, advising owners to rate an app before they removed it from their iPhone. Owners had the option of choosing between 1 and 5 stars, but Apple has now removed this feature within their OS.

This is due to concerns from developers that previous ratings did not give applications a fair review that they deserved, as Apple has no such feature in place for owners who actually like the app – but rather only when they decided to delete.

What are your thoughts on the removal? Perhaps Apple are planning to introduce a revamped application approval system for their apps, which would explain Apple’s decision to remove this.

It has been reported that Apple CEO Steve Jobs has responded to a developer’s complaint over recent changes to the iPhone OS license agreement for developers.

As reported from Apple Insider, Greg Slepak, CEO of TaoEffect wrote to Jobs expressing his concerns over Apple’s recent changes to the agreement, with obvious references to the new restrictions of certain Adobe Flash applications.

He told Jobs how general response over Apple’s move were negative, citing Daring Fireball’s John Gruber as a figure who also voiced concern over changes to the agreement.

However, Jobs responded to Slepak, with reference to John Gruber’s comments on the agreement, with the following statement “We think John Gruber’s post is very insightful and not negative.”

It is clear that Apple are standing firm on the whole issue, while it is probably likely that Adobe will find new methods to counter-attack Apple’s new restrictions on Flash.
