We have a list of some of the new features that have been found within the update so far.

As reported from Apple Insider, the beta is now available to download as of yesterday, and is also identified by the official 8C5115c build number.

So far, new features include 17 new SMS ringtones, with names such as “Sherwood Forest,” “Tiptoes”, “Calypso,” and “Choo Choo.” There is also a new updated version of the modem firmware according to Apple Insider.

The latest beta of iOS 4.2 also disables some features that were present in AirPlay on iOS 4.1. These include the actual AirPlay button on devices, and there is also a bug specific to printing with AirPlay.

It has been over a week since that report, and we are now closing in on the deadline.

We say deadline, as Apple has just released the beta 2 for iOS 4.2 to developers, which usually means that a full release for consumers follows shortly after.

Chronic Dev-Team, the guys responsible for the Greenpois0n jailbreak for iOS 4.1 devices, have already stated that they are working hard on a fix, but it seems as if many of you are beginning to get a bit frustrated on the wait.

Take this user comment by one of our readers when we asked about iPhone iOS 4.2 and GreenPois0n for example:

”It’s getting beyond the joke now waiting for this Jailbreak! I’ll give it a few more days to see what happens but if nothings out by then ill be updating my phone via itunes to the new beta version of 4.2.”

We understand where you are coming from, but then again don’t forget that this is a FREE service from the iPhone Dev-Team, they could start charging a fee for it if they really wanted to.

Considering the length it’s taken so far, do you really think Greenpois0n will be available before iOS 4.2? Let us know your predictions on this.

As reported from RedmondPie, the Redsn0w jailbreak tool isn’t available on the iPhone 4 or new iPod Touch yet, as iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd has confirmed via Twitter that the iPhone 3G and 2G iPod Touch are the only supported devices at the moment.

Unlike other jailbreak methods, this one doesn’t seem to be straight forward, so we only recommend trying this out if you have performed such tasks before. If you’re willing to give it a go, you will find a complete set of instructions over at RedmondPie here.

However, after the release of the iOS 4.2 beta for developers, some other features have been discovered.

The release of a new iOS version in beta format usually means an exciting time for general consumers, as some features which were not previously mentioned by Apple often get discovered by members of the community.

iOS 4.2 is no different, and Apple Insider reports that the new software brings added functionality to YouTube, Facetime Video Chat and more. If you are a regular user of YouTube, you’ll know that you can vote videos with a thumbs up or thumbs down symbol after watching. This feature is also coming to the YouTube app on iOS 4.2, but will feature in a more polished user interface as seen in the screenshots over at Apple Insider.

If you enjoy using Facetime features on iOS 4.1, you’ll now find a Facetime button located in the text messaging application on iOS 4.2. This will allow you to call your friends directly when already in a conversation, making it much more accessible to Facetime.

Other unannounced features of iOS 4.2 include support for CoreMIDI, and some new restrictions located in the settings menu. Head to Apple Insider for the full report and preview screenshots.

As reported from RedmondPie, you’ll be pleased to know that a full jailbreak and unlock method has been confirmed for iOS 4.2, but sadly only for iPhone 3GS users at the moment.

If you would like to try this out, you can jailbreak your handset using the old bootrom along with PwnageTool, and then unlock it afterwards using UltraSn0w. As usual, RedmondPie has compiled the easy to follow guidelines up on their website, along with some useful screenshots in case you get stuck at a particular stage.

If all goes well, you should have a jailbroken iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.2. For those waiting for the GreenPois0n release, it should be available very soon.

We have the first details on the upcoming iPhone iOS 4.2 update.

As reported from Trusted Reviews, iOS 4.1 will be landing on the iPhone and iPod Touch sometime next week, but Apple also teased iOS 4.2, which will be landing on the iPad, as well as the iPhone and iPod Touch in November.

You’ll be pleased to hear that iOS 4.2 will include all of the current features on the iPhone and iPod Touch, which means that the iPad will get multitasking support, a feature which is much requested by users.

New features of iOS 4.2 include AirPlay and Wireless Printing. Airplay is the new name for AirTunes, since the service will now support video, as well as music. Wireless Printing speaks for itself – it is a feature that was heavily requested, and now Apple has finally delivered.

Look out for a few report on iOS 4.2 soon. It will be available in November, although the exact date is unknown yet. Let us know your thoughts on the upcoming software update.
