Each year we know that Apple will launch a new iPhone, and there is always a debate about what they will call their latest smartphone. The smart money is now on the 4S; it had been assumed that Apple would call it the iPhone 5G, but that looks as though that will not come until next year. We already know that the 2011 model will have a spec bump, but we do not know what it will look like. It is this that prompts the question, what’s in a new design?

Usually we have no clue as to what a new iPhone will look like, but last year was an exception due to the fact that an engineer left one in a bar. In the past we have seen that phone makers have worked so hard in getting the hardware right, that the design is just an afterthought. However, Apple has always been different, but that does not mean that they always get it right.

Let’s take the iPhone 4 as a prime example, when the handset was leaked to the world a majority of us complained that it was not keeping with Apple’s often-sleek design. To some the 4th-generation model was a little too square and assumed that the leak was a hoax. Well a few months later we found that Apple had gone for that boxy route.

What made us laugh was the fact that those who had complained about the design lapped it up and has now made the iPhone 4 the most popular handset to date. We cannot understand why that is, maybe we just get caught in the Apple trance every time a new device is launched?

We can be certain that the iPhone 5G will have a radically new design compared to previous models, but what we cannot tell you is if it will be with us this year or next? Do you believe that the iPhone 5G – if that’s what it will be called – will get a totally new look?

Not content with LG and Motorola hogging all of the limelight with their upcoming dual-core smartphone releases this year, we are hearing reports that Apple may be planning to include a dual-core processor of their own for the elusive iPhone 5 handset.

As reported from RedmondPie, you may be unsurprised to hear that this story has surfaced from Digitimes, and their once again unnamed ‘industry sources’.

They state that while LG and Motorola have already announced and unveiled their dual-core smartphones in the way of the LG Optimus 2X and the Motorola Atrix, the likes of Samsung, Nokia and HTC are also expected to debut dual-core smartphones at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) event in Barcelona.

We definitely see some truth in this claim, as if this happens, it’s logical that Apple may feel left out of the dual-core party this year, and will obviously want to bring something to the table that keeps them competitive in the market. If the iPhone 5 is announced without a dual-core chip, some eyebrows may be raised as to whether it will remain the handset to own in 2011.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think the iPhone 5 needs a dual-core processor or not?

Consider this the first of many to come, as we have one of the first images of a concept iPhone 5 or 5th generation device for you to take a look at now, giving you some ideas on what the device may end up looking like.

As reported from RedmondPie, this image of an iPhone 5 prototype has been created courtesy of the guys over at German website Handyflash, as they have come up with a sexy looking device, which I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing at WWDC 2011.

As you can see from the image, this design is reminiscent of the current slew of thin LED TV sets out at the moment, with the iPhone 5 sporting an ultra thin body, while still retaining that aluminium trim around the edges.

Their specs include 4G download speeds of up to 100Mbps, an enhanced Retina Display Screen with added Backlight feature, 10.2 megapixel camera and a new generation battery too.

While these specs are pretty tasty, it is unlikely that we’ll see all of them added into the iPhone 5, but you would have to say that 4G speeds should be a certainty. There could even be the possibility of 3D features added into the mix – what do you think?

Do you like this concept design or not? Let us know if you have seen a better one!

We have some interesting news to bring you now, as it has been confirmed that Apple has secured a patent which looks at the possibility of using HD Radio features for future devices.

As reported from Apple Insider, the news is pretty good for iPhone or iPod Touch users, as the addition of a HD Radio would allow scan and search features through live radio content – eliminating the need to flip stations yourself.

The new patent from Apple is called “Digital Radio Tagging Using an RF Tuner Accessory,” and the main feature will allow AM and FM radio stations to broastcast digital and analog audio within the same channel.

If you head over to Apple Insider, you’ll be able to see an image of the patent in question. It is worth pointing out that Apple already has a built-in radio on the latest version of the iPod Nano, but are the company planning a major upgrade for their iPhone 5G handset?

Let us know your thoughts on this. Full details through the link.

Even though the iPhone 4G has not yet been officially revealed there is already talk regarding the iPhone 4G’s successor, the iPhone 5G, obviously details regarding this smartphone are completely unknown, despite this NetworkWorld are already predicting this handset’s specifications.

If these predictions are close to the truth the iPhone 5G will be extremely impressive, faster than any smartphone we have ever seen before.

They believe that the iPhone 5G will feature a Qualcomm dual-core Snapdragon processor, NetworkWorld believe that this processor will have two 1.5GHz cores, perhaps faster.

This seems pretty possible as it is expected that Qualcomm will release a similar processor before the end of the year. Apparently two chips are currently underdevelopment, one is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8X50A, this will have a single 1.3GHz core, and a 45nm architecture, which means it should run cooler and more efficient then current chips.

The other chip under-development is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8X72, this is a dual-core chip sporting two 1.5GHz cores, this powerful chip should give smartphones 1080p HD video capabilities (recording and playback).

Apple have a tendency to underclock their iPhone’s processor clock speed, however a dual-core chip with 2 x 1.5Ghz underclocked by 10-20% will still be very impressive.

We have an interesting article for you to read now, which focuses specifically on that special custom designed case that Apple used to disguise their iPhone 4G prototype as a iPhone 3GS.

As reported from Gizmodo, the case is pretty sophistated and was designed using molded plastic, to which the new design was able to fit inside as the perfect disguise.

It makes you wonder ever since the prototype was lost, just how many other iPhone 4G prototypes are out there concealed in a case like the one Gizmodo found.

Now that Apple’s secret is out on the fake cases, will they choose to go down this route with the iPhone 5G? The cases are so good, that we wouldnt be surprised if they did create another one up from stratch.
