Earlier today we hit upon a great hypothesis regarding Apple’s agenda with the newly released unlocked iPhone 4. However, we feel that the handset is pointless, and we still find if strange how people have been confusing this with a jailbroken version. One of the main reason that it is not worth buying is down to the price, $649 and $749 is a lot of money to pay for a device that is now a year old.

Most iPhone users do not need an unlocked version, only those who travel to other countries. Then again if you have a business contract, then there is still no need for an unlocked version. If all you do is stay at home in the U.S., then you may as well stick with your locked iPhone.

Another downside is setting them up on other carriers. More often than not there will be issues with settings, as each carrier has different ones, such as MMS, Voicemail etc. Also you have to remember that you will not be able to gain full access to other carrier’s services, T-Mobile and their 3G service being a prime example of that.

The only other strong reason not to buy a jailbroken iPhone 4 is the fact that it is a waste of money. We say this because that is a huge amount of money to pay for a phone that is set to be replaced in the coming months.

Finally please do not confuse this with a jailbroken device, as it is not. Although it will be open for other networks, it is still closed for those unauthorized apps– so think before you buy. If you do wish to have a jailbroken iPhone, then eWeek suggests that you are much better off purchasing a locked version and then jailbreaking it.

You may remember just over a week ago when we told you that the iPhone Dev Team were preparing to release an untethered jailbreak for users on iOS 4.2.1 devices. We can now confirm that the software is now available and we have a video guide showing you how to install it.

The download links have been provided by the guys over at Redmond Pie, who have also taken the time to shoot a video guide, showing you exactly how to get this running on your device if you are unfamiliar with installing jailbreak software.

You’ll be pleased to know that PwnageTool 4.2 supports almost all devices, meaning that those of you with an iPhone 4 can enjoy this as well. You’ll now be able to make full use of software such as Cydia and you won’t need to reinstall any more software after rebooting your device. PwnageTool 4.2 also supports the iPhone 3G, 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, 4G and even the recently released Verizon iPhone too.

If you are wondering if this is available on the iPad or Apple TV, rest assured as PwnageTool 4.2 should work just fine as well. If you know what you’re doing, head to RedmondPie for the download links. Just a quick reminder, if you’re planning to use PwnageTool 4.2 on the Verizon iPhone, it will void your warranty with Apple and Verizon – but you probably already knew that.

Check out the video tutorial below. If you run into any trouble whilst updating, leave us a comment below. You can also head to the iPhone Dev Team website here for help from other users.

We have some news for those of you with some mobile development experience, as the creators of iOS 4.1 jailbreaking tool GreenPois0n have confirmed that their release will become available for open source development soon.

As reported from RedmondPie, the Chronic Dev-Team confirmed the news in a recent status update on Twitter, adding that the open source tools for GreenPois0n will be available once the main release moves out of beta.

What will an open source release of GreenPois0n mean though? Well, it will essentially allow developers and other members of the public access to all the tools within GreenPois0n, allowing them to modify it with extra features and tweaks to their liking.

We don’t have a release ETA for the open source version of GreenPois0n yet, but we’ll let you know as soon as it becomes available. If you have any current problems on GreenPois0n, visit our issues thread here.

It looks like the PwnageTool jailbreak is getting better by the day, especially for those who haven’t already jailbroken their device on iOS 4.1, as it has just been reported that the tool will be untethered, and that it will jailbreak iOS 4.2 too!

As reported from RedmondPie, it was previously thought that an untethered option wouldn’t be available on iOS 4.2, as Apple would of patched things up by then, but a recent tweet by iPhone Dev-Team member Musclenerd suggests otherwise.

”Think we’ve figured out a way to extend PwnageTool + limera1n + @comex hacks to untethered JBs for all future A4 firmwares ”

In simpler terms, it is great news for those of you who are yet to jailbreak. It means that even if Apple come up with a solution to block the likes of GreenPois0n and Limera1n on iOS 4.2, users can still use the upcoming PwnageTool jailbreak to remain untethered on iOS 4.2.

As for release, it is still planned for Sunday unless things change dramatically. For those that are still asking for an unlock method on iOS 4.1, once you jailbreak with PwnageTool you can then unlock using ultrasn0w.

Let us know your thoughts on the latest news.

As we told you just a few hours ago, iPhone hacker Geohot has once again surprised us all by releasing Limera1n ahead of schedule, more importantly – earlier than GreenPois0n. However, some of you appear to be having problems with Limera1n after installing, as confirmed on the official Limera1n website.

If you haven’t tried installing the Limera1n jailbreak for your iOS 4.1 device yet, you can do so by obtaining the download over at Geohot’s website here.

While the download notes says that this will jailbreak all devices on iOS 4.1, it looks as if there is a known problem when trying to install Limera1n on the iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.1. This has been confirmed by Geohot himself with the following message:

”3GS new bootrom is broken, fix pending”

For those of you who are having problems, hold on as we’re sure Geohot is working on a quick fix for you. The good news however, is that Limera1n appears to be working flawlessly on the iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1.

If you have any problems during or after installation, let us know in the comments section.

If you have been keeping up to date with all the latest news surrounding the release of the GreenPois0n jailbreak tool, you are probably disappointed to hear that it is only going to be available for a select number of devices.

The tweet below by the Chronic Dev-Team confirms that GreenPois0n will only be available on newer iOS 4.1 devices:

”greenpois0n supports: The iPad, the iPhone 4, and the iPod touch 4. Probably the AppleTV as well.”

So it means that those of you who have been patiently waiting for GreenPois0n to jailbreak your iPhone 3G / 3GS and iPod Touch 3G are going to be very disappointed this Sunday.

Chronic Dev-Team hasn’t given a reason why it won’t support older devices, but you can bet that work is already underway to come up with a solution to this.

For now though, it is only iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4 owners who should be excited about GreenPois0n. It releases this Sunday, let us know your thoughts on this.

Are you disappointed?

Following on from our previous article which gave you an update on the list of supported devices for the GreenPois0n jailbreak on iOS 4.1, we now have some information on if the jailbreak will be tethered or not.

As reported from RedmondPie, the Chronic Dev-Team has yet to officially announce details regarding tethering support for the GreenPois0n jailbreak, but that hasn’t stopped others from providing their input.

We have a few tweets for you to read now, the first comes from Cydia developer chpwn:

@chpwn: The tethered status of SHAtter or greenpoison has not been announced. It’s a surprise!

Here is another one from ‘Vincent’ who those in the jailbreak scene will know about:

@veeence: Sunday. Untethered.

Considering that the news still hasn’t been confirmed by Chronic Dev-Team yet, we should take nothing for granted, especially with the amount of false GreenPois0n info flying around.

Let us know your thoughts on the tethering debate.

While we still wait for Chronic Dev-Team to release GreenPois0n for iOS 4.1 devices, one of the members of the team has confirmed that the tool will support Hacktivation after it’s released.

If you head over to the Twitter account of Chronic Dev-Team member p0sixninja, you will see this tweet that confirms hacktivation. For those of you who are unaware, hacktivation is the process that bypasses Apple’s official procedure of activating before you can use it. Once a device is hacktivated, it will then allow you to use it without an official SIM card.

This little trick will come in very handy with the release of GreenPois0n, as previous methods were often a lot of hassle when using tools such as Spirit and JailbreakMe.

The only disappointing thing is that the tool is still not out, despite the members of the jailbreaking community suggesting it would be out in ‘days’.

Do you plan to hacktivate your iPhone 4 after using GreenPois0n? We’ll be sure to let you know if there are any further updates on this.

Some of you may want to head straight to an unlocking procedure after jailbreaking your iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4G on iOS 4.1, but others may just want a jailbroken device so that they can start customizing their handset with various tweets and mods.

Cydia has a whole store of applications waiting for newly jailbroken handsets, while those feeling adventurous may want to attempt to install a completely different operating system on the iPhone, such as Android.

The key word is freedom here, and a jailbroken handset will give you just that. Let us know what you are planning to after GreenPois0n is out – we’ve created a poll below for you.

You may remember our report telling you that a jailbreak for the iPhone 4 and New iPod Touch would be available before Apple officially updates to iOS 4.2. It has been over a week since that report, and we are now closing in on the deadline.

We say deadline, as Apple has just released the beta 2 for iOS 4.2 to developers, which usually means that a full release for consumers follows shortly after.

Chronic Dev-Team, the guys responsible for the Greenpois0n jailbreak for iOS 4.1 devices, have already stated that they are working hard on a fix, but it seems as if many of you are beginning to get a bit frustrated on the wait.

Take this user comment by one of our readers when we asked about iPhone iOS 4.2 and GreenPois0n for example:

”It’s getting beyond the joke now waiting for this Jailbreak! I’ll give it a few more days to see what happens but if nothings out by then ill be updating my phone via itunes to the new beta version of 4.2.”

We understand where you are coming from, but then again don’t forget that this is a FREE service from the iPhone Dev-Team, they could start charging a fee for it if they really wanted to.

Considering the length it’s taken so far, do you really think Greenpois0n will be available before iOS 4.2? Let us know your predictions on this.
