The iOS 4.2 is currently only available as a beta for developers, but is due for release to the public any day now. This update will add some useful features to the iPad including multi-tasking, and we have a review of the update for you.

Jeffrey L.Wilson of PCMag has managed to install the update to an iPad and has written a review going through all the new features and improvements. On first looks everything seems pretty similar to the 3.2.2, but feels more polished compared to its current main rival the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Some of the visual changes include a navigation arrow which appears in the toolbar as soon as you start up a location based application.

When you click on the Home button you are now offered two extra options ‘Search Wikipedia’ and ‘Search Web’. These options both launch the Safari Web browser and take you to the result depending on your choice.

The new multitasking feature was tested by running the Life magazine app and the free iBook Winnie Pooh, which worked extremely well without any problems. By double tapping the Home button reveals a second row of icons, which are all the apps that are currently running, and can be are switched off by pressing and holding the relative icon.

Folders can now be created when you have a vast amount of apps, this is done by simply pressing and holding the app until it begins to wiggle, you then put it on top of another app to create a folder. Head over to PCMag to read the full review.

The release of iOS 4.2 is just around the corner, and it will give iPad owners a much welcome update. Apple is also starting to deploy their iAD network worldwide, following availability restricted to just the UK and North America.

Reports of developers starting to see ad impressions from new locations from around the globe are beginning to surface. This follows the news that Apple plans to open a new office for its expanding iAd team in Manhattan. At the moment staff are working from the office that Quattro Wireless used before they were purchased by Apple.

In the summer they started hiring staff for the “iAd Creative & Strategy team”. It is stated on Apple’s iAd website that “iAd reaches millions of iPhone and iPod touch users around the world.”

Apple also points to the fact that they have more than 160 million iTunes accounts across 23 countries, but doesn’t say if all these can view iAds. Added to this expansion when iOS 4.2 is released, iAd comes to the iPad adding several million potential customers for advertisers to target.

We have some good news for iPad owners now, as we have the first preview to show you of the device running iOS 4.2, a forthcoming update from Apple which is expected to drop soon.

The preview comes to us courtesy of Engadget, who has also supplied us with a great hands-on video of iOS 4.2 as well. Their first impressions are that iOS 4.2 looks great on the iPad, adding that they didn’t seem to be any lag when using the new multitasking feature to switch between multiple apps at once.

You’ll be pleased to know that you can now start using folders with space for up to 20 apps per folder, which is sure to please those of you with untidy pages of countless apps.

There are also new settings for the AirPlay/Air Print modes, as well as the inclusion of the Apple Game Center. Take a look at their hands-on video below and let us know your thoughts on it.

Are you looking forward to iOS 4.2?
