Apple’s new iPad is still grabbing the headlines, whether it is lack of stock or who is actually buying the device. Today we can report that an in-depth scientific analysis has been done on Apple’s iPad 2.

Josh Ong of AppleInsider is reporting that the review of the iPad 2 has revealed that the display has “almost identical” performance to the iPhone 4. The tests were carried out by Dr. Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies. Soneira commented that the device had “excellent LCD display hardware”.

The display came in for praise but it was felt it would benefit from a software update to enhance anti-aliasing and automatic brightness controls. This would then compensate for the devices lower pixel density. The new iPad still has the same pixels per inch as the original device of 132 ppi, compared to the iPhone 4s of 326ppi.

Soneira also thinks that Apple’s automatic brightness controls have a “bug”, and said “the brightest ambient light sensor value that has been measured at any point starting from the time unit was awakened”. This is said to happen with all IOS devices and can be easily fixed with a software update.

It is thought that Apple will improve the display on the iPad next year with the 3rd generation device, but manufacturing issues and cost led to Apple delaying the Retina Display upgrade with the iPad. Even though the display is not quite as good as the iPhone 4, the new iPad has been improved a lot considering the old one was not even out one year.
