Many of you would have been excited to hear about the iPad 2 jailbreak that was due for a release today. The rumor began this morning when an image emerged with today’s date and a pm time on it suggesting the arrival of JailbreakMe 3.0. This was reported to have come from a twitter account owned by Comex.

Having previously brought you news of a working iPad 2 jailbreak being hinted for release by Dev Team it seems as though there are a few other groups out there working hard at developing the first jailbreak for the popular Apple device. It was even suggested that GeoHot might be the first.

As it stands we are still waiting as the Comex image has since been proved as fake, which means the estimated time of arrival for a jailbreak is unknown. This for a lot of people is very disappointing news as they will have been waiting since the release of the iPad 2 for it.

MuscleNerd, headman from Dev Team responded to a post asking for a more specific time for when the jailbreak would arrive with a tweet which stated Comex’s tweet from yesterday, which said the jailbreak was ‘almost ready’, was as close to a time as they would get, confirming that it was fake.

Who do you think will be the first to provide a jailbreak for the iPad 2? Are you looking forward to it?

We have some great news for the thousands of you that are patiently waiting for a working iPad 2 jailbreak, as we have just been given an update on progress by the Chronic Dev Team, who you may remember were responsible for bringing the GreenPois0n jailbreak to the iPhone.

They have posted an update on their website, revealing a hidden message if you like that they have solved a potential stumbling block in figuring out how to jailbreak the iPad 2, the only Apple device yet to be unlocked.

Unfortunately, they still don’t have an estimated release date eta for when the jailbreak will be available, but their message alone seems to suggest that it’s just around the corner. On a side note, there is no update from Geohot yet, as you may remember us informing you that he had ‘accepted’ a challenge to be the first person to jailbreak the device before the likes of the iPhone and Chronic Dev Teams.

Are you still holding out for a jailbreak solution for your iPad 2? Do you think Chronic Dev Team will be the first guys to do it, or do you still believe Geohot will surprise us all with a release? We’ll let you know when there are any further updates on this.

Geohot may have well and truly left the PS3 development scene after his adventures in court with Sony, but we’re now hearing about something just as exciting with regards to one of Apple’s prized assets which he is now interested in.

Remember the iPad 2? For those of you who have one, you’ll already be aware that it has yet to be jailbroken by any members of the iPhone Dev Team or other community members. Well now it has been reported by RedmondPie that Geohot has accepted a challenge to jailbreak the device before P0sixninja – a member of the Chronic Dev-Team which you may remember released the GreenPois0n jailbreak for the iPhone.

Below are a few tweets from P0Sixninja confirming Geohot’s acceptance to jailbreak the iPad 2:

” @p0sixninja: I challenged geohot to dump the iPad2 bootrom before me. Maybe having a worthy opponent will motivate me to work harder =P

@p0sixninja: he accepted, he said he didn’t have an iPad yet but he’s getting one really soon”

No word from Geohot himself on his official blog, but don’t be surprised if we suddenly see Apple’s newest tablet unlocked in the weeks to come. Also, don’t forget it’s all legal now after his exploits on the iPhone. He has to find something to keep himself entertained after all – what an ideal way for him to get back into the headlines.

What are your thoughts on this? Are you happy that Geohot is now going to attempt to jailbreak the iPad 2?

Well, well well – we didn’t think it would be talking about this so soon, but we stand corrected. It has just been confirmed that a member of the iPhone Dev-Team has managed to successfully jailbreak the recently released iPad 2 device running iOS 4.3.

The person responsible is Comex, and he has wasted to time in providing a picture as proof, showing his swanky new iPad 2 running on the jailbreak-only Cydia software, which you can see over at Engadget. At the moment, there is no word on a public download for this, but you can bet that Comex is working on getting a release fixed up asap.

Interestingly, it has also been confirmed that a new exploit was required to make the jailbreak possible on Apple’s new hardware, again we’re sure we’ll be hearing full details on the exploit used throughout the week.

What are your thoughts on the jailbreak? Are you shocked and surprised that this has happened so quickly? Are you patiently waiting to get Cydia up and running on your iPad 2 or are you going to stay away from jailbreaking your device?

You can keep up to date on the latest events on the iPad 2 jailbreak by following Comex’s Twitter page here. We’ll inform you when the download becomes available.
