The company has highlighted in small print on their website that the new turn-by-turn navigation features on iOS 6 will only be supported on the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and the new iPad.

Since Siri is not available on the iPhone 4 anyway, some of you may have expected this. But it is a still a major blow when you think that Apple failed to mention this at their conference and have decided to reveal it in small print right at the bottom of their iOS 6 overview online.

Detailed in a series of points, they also reveal that the new FaceTime over Cellular feature won’t be available on the iPhone 4 either. This feature will be exclusive to the iPhone 4S and new iPad only, meaning that even iPad 2 users do not get to enjoy this feature.

Another questionable tactic regarding this will be Apple’s reasons for doing such a thing. We will most likely hear that turn-by-turn isn’t possible on the iPhone 4 due to the A4 processor, but as jailbreak users have found out – features like Siri and FaceTime over Cellular work better than ever on the iPhone 4.

Is it a bit sly of Apple, not to mention this at WWDC 2012 and effectively force users to upgrade their hardware in order to enjoy these key features of iOS 6? Turn-by-turn navigation within iOS 6 Maps is easily the most impressive feature seen so far and it is a big disappointment to hear that Apple can’t extend the love to their loyal iPhone 4 owners.

Did you know about this? Read the small print on Apple’s website here for yourself and let us know your thoughts on it.

iOS 5 features a bug that allows photos to be seen on locked device http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/04/ios-5-features-a-bug-that-allows-photos-to-be-seen-on-locked-device/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2012/01/04/ios-5-features-a-bug-that-allows-photos-to-be-seen-on-locked-device/#comments Wed, 04 Jan 2012 17:58:49 +0000 Gary Johnson http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=146925 Since Apple released iOS 5 late last year the software has experienced some teething troubles with some users complaining of worsening battery life on their devices. Now it seems that iOS 5 features a bug that allows photos to be viewed on a locked device.

A clever tech consultant from Canada, Ade Barkah, has found an issue that allows photos to be seen via the lockscreen camera button on an iPhone running iOS 5. According to Cnet this happens even if the handset is locked via a pass code. Apple added an easily accessible button with the latest software so users wouldn’t miss those special shots.

To try it on your own device just double click the home button to access the camera, but then if you do try and access the photo gallery you get the message that tells you to unlock your handset to view photos and videos.

But if you go into the Phone’s settings and change the date to in the past, and try to access the photo gallery again you will be able to see all the photos taken since that date. Barkah said in his blog that if your iPhone clock goes back, “all images with time stamps newer than your iPhone’s clock will be viewable from your locked phone”.

You may be wondering why the iPhone clock would ever roll back as most users have the date and time automatically set. But if you travel across time zones the date could be accidentally set incorrectly, and Barkah wrote about the problem while traveling between Canada and Argentina by road.

There is always the chance an issue could reset the iPhone clock to epoch time, or if the device is ever synced from an external source like the cell phone carrier. Currently Apple hasn’t responded to the issue.

Hundreds of complaints on iOS 5 WiFi signal problems emerge http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/22/hundreds-of-complaints-on-ios-5-wifi-signal-problems-emerge/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/22/hundreds-of-complaints-on-ios-5-wifi-signal-problems-emerge/#comments Tue, 22 Nov 2011 10:27:31 +0000 Alan Ng http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=145486 Here’s something that Apple won’t enjoy reading but very rarely do the official support boards at Apple tell lies. After informing you about battery life problems and a case of invalid SIM error messages for some users, there now appears to be a problem regarding WiFi signal quality on iOS 5.

Another lengthy debate has been brewing on the Apple boards for well over a month now, and seems to have gone unnoticed amidst the other iOS-related problems that we mentioned above.

If you take a look at this thread though over at the Apple boards, you’ll see that complaints are still flying in today about WiFi-related problems on iOS 5, despite the thread being created on October 13th. After more than 230 replies from disgruntled users, it has become apparent that there may be another serious problem that Apple has to deal with in their next software update. Considering that replies are still coming in today, it does suggest that Apple’s recent iOS 5.0.1 update does not solve the problem either.

Devices affected by the WiFi problem include the iPhone 4, the new 4S, the iPad, iPad 2, the iPhone 3GS and also the iPod Touch as well, as noted by Engadget. It has been detailed that in some cases, iOS devices fail to connect to a WiFi network, often giving an ‘unable to connect’ message despite the fact that the WiFi network is working fine on other devices.

Here’s one example taken from the Apple support thread, posted just yesterday (November 21st):

”I am having wi-fi connection problems on my iPhone 4 & iPad 2 since upgrading to iOS 5. My devices see networks but sometimes take a very long time to connect. And then, once connected, it can take a while to actually be able to send & receive data. It’s very frustrating. I never had these problems prior to the iOS 5 upgrade. Apple, please help.”

After so much hype and promise about iOS 5, it looks like Apple’s biggest software update to date is causing users a lot of headaches. The company has yet to fully sort out battery life issues, and these ‘new found’ WiFi signal problems are likely to go away anytime soon.

If you have experienced similar problems to the ones mentioned above, get in touch with us. What device are you using and what iOS version do you have running? Are the problems frequent or do they just occur sporadically?

iOS 5.0.2 on route, will Apple finally sort iPhone battery issues? http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/17/ios-5-0-2-on-route-will-apple-finally-sort-iphone-battery-issues/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/17/ios-5-0-2-on-route-will-apple-finally-sort-iphone-battery-issues/#comments Thu, 17 Nov 2011 08:51:40 +0000 Gary Johnson http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=145226 When Apple launched the iOS 5.0.1 update is was to address iPhone 4S battery problems that some users were experiencing, which also included some owners of other iPhone models. The update was made available pretty quickly and did fix the problem for some, but as we reported recently people who didn’t have a problem before now had issues. Now we can tell you that an iOS 5.0.2 update may be on route, so will Apple finally sort iPhone battery issues?

According to an article on MacRumors via German website Macerkopf, Apple is currently working on two iOS 5 updates, with one focused on enhancements to the Siri feature with some new options for users. But the update rumored to finally fix the battery life issues may be coming as early as next week.

The last update only spent a week in testing so any new enhancement next week would be a quick release. There have been many users complaining of losing battery life now after having no problems previously when first installing iOS 5. This seems to be affecting users of a variety of iPhone models as well not just the iPhone 4S.

These issues will be of some embarrassment to the company but at least it does look like a software problem and nothing to do with the hardware. It’s a strange situation as the problems hasn’t been affecting all iPhone users. Many have said once the iOS 5.0.1 update was installed things improved nicely, but that has not been the case for all though.

Did your battery life worsen after installing iOS 5.0.1?

iOS 5 problems still exist after download, possible fix http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/12/ios-5-problems-still-exist-after-download-possible-fix/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/12/ios-5-problems-still-exist-after-download-possible-fix/#comments Sat, 12 Nov 2011 13:18:23 +0000 Gary Johnson http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=144989 A couple of days ago Apple released the iOS 5.0.1 update that was mainly to fix issues concerning shorter battery life for some iPhone owners had been experiencing. Many used the new feature of downloading the software over the air, which proved to be pretty painless for most. But can we now report that some iOS 5 problems still exist after the download of the update and a possible fix.

There are some users who are taking to the Apple Support forums and complaining the update didn’t address issues with battery life, and according to PCWorld additional problems have come to light. Users are now complaining of problems when connecting to the internet via Wi-Fi as well as issues with Address Book contacts.

PCWorld are suggesting the problems may not be with the iOS 5.0.1 update itself and many have tried to replicate the reported problems. An Apple spokesperson has said the company are currently looking into “a few” issues surrounding battery life, so that problem may not have been completely fixed.

The changes that were made via the software update don’t include any of the issues that users are now complaining about on the support forums. There is a big variety between the issues reported by the users, and it could be that they are the result of corrupted installations of iOS. If the update process gets interrupted in any way it may corrupt the data, or even the OS itself. This can lead to a variety of different issues.

If you are having issues with iOS 5 or after updating to iOS 5.0.1 you could try restoring your iPhone back to the factory defaults on your iGadget to start again. To achieve this first connect the device to your PC and open iTunes. Select your iDevice and press the Restore button, but you must be careful not to restore from a backup as this will just backup from the corrupted iOS install.

This will mean though you have to re-sync all of your apps, data, and music from scratch that will take hours to do, so only do this procedure if you can spare plenty of time. But if you are having a lot of issues it may be worthwhile.

Have you had any problems since updating to iOS 5.0.1?

More iOS 5 secrets come to light, Android type autocorrect bar http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/10/more-ios-5-secrets-come-to-light-android-type-autocorrect-bar/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/10/more-ios-5-secrets-come-to-light-android-type-autocorrect-bar/#comments Thu, 10 Nov 2011 13:53:18 +0000 Gary Johnson http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=144910 Since it was first launched last month Apple’s new operating system has mainly been well received by most users. That’s not dismissing the problems though as many complained that the battery life on their device got worse after downloading it. This led to Apple to admit to the problem and is currently working on a fix with a future update. We now have more iOS 5 secrets that come to light with an Android type autocorrect bar.

We have already told you about the hidden feature concerning Siri on the iPhone 4S, which followed the discovery of the panorama mode for Apple’s camera app. Now according to an article over at 9 To 5 Mac iOS 5 is hiding another secret. This time it comes thanks to an Android like autocorrect keyboard bar, which can be seen by clicking the link above.

This discovery could well lead to a fresh round of lawsuits, but you can easily enable it now if you so wish. First of all you need to download iBackupBot, and then backup your device via iTunes. After that is complete you use iBackupBot to discover and install the backup you have just done.

Then head into library/preferences/com.apple.keyboard.plist and open the file, after this you need to put in the following code KeyboardAutocorrectionListsYES. After this you need to save all your modifications and restore from backup from inside iBackupbot.

Obviously only do this at your own risk but the procedure looks pretty straight forward, and let us know how you get on with it.

Siri on iOS 5 has a hidden feature on the iPhone 4S http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/10/siri-on-ios-5-has-a-hidden-feature-on-the-iphone-4s/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/10/siri-on-ios-5-has-a-hidden-feature-on-the-iphone-4s/#comments Thu, 10 Nov 2011 08:24:39 +0000 Alan Ng http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=144861 Two hidden iOS 5 features in the space of a week, could this get any more exciting for iPhone fans? After informing you about Apple’s secret Panorama camera mode on iOS, another hidden feature has been spotted, this time related to the world’s favorite female assistant, Siri.

After a routine teardown of the iPhone 4S by those specialists at iFixit, it was discovered that Siri has some added functionality that Apple didn’t focus on at their recent event when they first unveiled the device, as reported from Apple Insider.

The functionality in question allows Siri to operate from just placing the handset to your ear, utilizing a new ‘raise-to-speak’ mode of Siri. This is possible as iFixit discovered that the iPhone 4S actually possesses a new proximity sensor different to the one featured on the iPhone 4 and it could be a piece of the puzzle in Apple’s decision to restrict Siri to the iPhone 4S only.

Generally, most consumers use the standard method of activating Siri by pushing the home key down, but you can actually use the services of Siri just by raising the phone to your ear. It is the new proximity sensor that lets this happen, although users need to switch this feature on first in their iPhone settings.

We have included a video below from iFixit which explains a little more about Apple’s new proximity sensor on the iPhone 4S. Have you ever used the raise-to-speak function of Siri, or do you just hold the button down? In Apple’s defence, we can see why they didn’t make Siri available on the iPhone 4 initially, as it would then disable some features of Siri since the proximity sensor on the iPhone 4 operates in a different way to the iPhone 4S.

How often do you really use Siri? Have any of you plucked up the courage to start talking to your phone in public or is Siri strictly for home only?

iOS 5 hidden features: Try panorama mode now without jailbreak http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/09/ios-5-hidden-features-try-panorama-mode-now-without-jailbreak/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/09/ios-5-hidden-features-try-panorama-mode-now-without-jailbreak/#comments Wed, 09 Nov 2011 04:26:48 +0000 Alan Ng http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=144688 We have some interesting news for those of you who are currently running iOS 5 on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch now, as it has been revealed that Apple has hidden one feature inside the code for their camera app, and it relates to a new panorama mode that may be releasing at some point in the future.

Since this feature isn’t available to the public yet, it is obvious that it is still very much in development at Apple HQ. However, that hasn’t stopped iPhone hackers from getting their hands on the feature, courtesy of a jailbroken handset and the user known as ConraDev who has been credited with the discovery.

Chpwn, another hacker who is more well known to the community has posted some screenshots showing the panaroma mode in action, and you can see the collection of screenshots in one merged image here, thanks to 9To5Mac. You’ll be pleased to know that their report also offers a guide on how to get Panorama mode active on your device if you decide that you want to try it out.

To do this, you won’t need a jailbroken iPhone either, but you will need to download an App from the App store and fiddle around with some files in iTunes. The obvious question now, is when are Apple planning to make this feature fully functional? Is it a feature intended for the next major release of iOS, or is a canned feature that was never intended for public viewing in the first place?

Considering that this mode isn’t finished yet, we don’t recommend you heading out and trying this as there doesn’t seem to be too much in the way of reward for doing so. Having said that, the method above which doesn’t require jailbreaking will not void your warranty with Apple so it may be a cool thing to check out if you want to pass the time.

Do you have this hidden panorama mode on your iPhone yet?

Siri works on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 download still M.I.A http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/08/siri-works-on-iphone-3gs-iphone-4-download-still-m-i-a/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/08/siri-works-on-iphone-3gs-iphone-4-download-still-m-i-a/#comments Tue, 08 Nov 2011 08:42:01 +0000 Alan Ng http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=144675 We recently informed you about the latest status regarding a working Siri port for the iPhone 4, but now we can confirm that the same process as also been applied to the iPhone 3GS, including getting the device to interact with Apple’s Siri servers.

In case you are not up to speed with the Siri port adventure so far, the developer known as Steven Troughton-Smith managed to get Siri fully operational on the iPhone 4. This was then followed up by respected community developer chpwn, who managed to achieve the same feat on the iPod Touch 4.

Now, a new developer has stepped into the limelight and with the help of both Troughton-Smith and chpwn, Ryan Petrich has managed to get Siri running on the iPhone 3GS – sort of.

We say sort of, as the port isn’t at an advanced stage as the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4 ports, as Siri reportedly has problems working on the iPhoneG 3GS whenever there is ambient noise in the background. This has been put down to a issue with the microphone featured on the 3GS, in that it is not of the same high standard as featured on the iPhone 4. As soon as there’s ambient noise, Siri won’t work effectively, and the user will have to close the app, according to 9to5Mac.

Still though, this is another positive step for getting Siri running on as many devices other than the iPhone 4S as possible, although fans would like to see a download become available as soon as possible after all these recent teases.

We’ve included a brief clip below showing evidence of Siri running on the 3GS, although we hope that a longer clip surfaces soon as we would like to see how the 3GS handles Siri a bit more, rather than an 18 second clip showing one voice command only.

Are you patiently waiting for Siri to land on the iPhone 4? It’s still impressive nevertheless that someone has managed to get it functioning on a device as old as the iPhone 3GS and let’s face it – the 3GS is pretty ancient these days.

Malware spotted on iOS 5 – Are Apple’s standards slipping? http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/08/malware-spotted-on-ios-5-are-apples-standards-slipping/ http://www.product-reviews.net/2011/11/08/malware-spotted-on-ios-5-are-apples-standards-slipping/#comments Tue, 08 Nov 2011 03:27:12 +0000 Alan Ng http://www.product-reviews.net/?p=144673 We have some important news for iPhone users on iOS 5 now, as it has been confirmed that a user has managed to get malware running on the Apple App store, due to a new security flaw in iOS that has been exploited to highlight the problem.

This malware, disguised in applications has the ability to steal user data and also take control of various settings on iOS devices such as the iPhone and iPad, according to a report by Apple Insider.

The person who found the security flaw in iOS 5 and then exploited it by creating malware hidden in Apps is Charlie Miller, and although he has given Apple an opportunity to highlight the problem and fix it up in a future software update, he now finds himself banned from the App Store and has been removed from the iOS Developer Program as well.

Considering that no real damage was done to Apple, other than bad press – the move could and probably will be seen as very harsh. Apple has just released the latest beta of iOS 5 and the whole purpose of these tests are to find flaws like these that could become a serious problem for Apple, in the wrong hands that is, not hands of a hard working Apple researcher who also discovered a Macbook battery vulnerability and a Safari Mobile security hole.

In reality though, Apple are now aware of this problem and we’re guessing that they will be fixing this up asap in the next iOS software update. We have added a video below showing how the security flaw works specifically – You can see the potential dangers of this code-signing bug as the user can freely type away commands on a computer for an iOS device to follow instantly.

Firstly what are your thoughts on this bug – do you agree that it looks incredibly dangerous? Secondly, do you think it was right of Apple to ban the person who pointed out this flaw or not?
