We told you that a untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 would be coming very soon and now the respective Chronic Dev Team and iPhone Dev Team have delivered. Absinthe 2.0 is now available to download and according to the makers, it’s one of the easiest jailbreaks to install yet.

Apple are obviously not going to be happy about this, especially given the fact that their latest version of iOS has been blown wide open with apparent ease. Furthermore, the people behind Absinthe have even goaded Apple by saying that the jailbreak is so easy to install, ‘even your grandma could do it’.

Consumers who jailbreak their device are well aware of the risks though, so this untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 will be greeted with open arms we feel. Just to remind those that haven’t attempted to jailbreak before – an untethered jailbreak means that you can install this and won’t have to keep installing the jailbreak when the iOS device is turned off. A tethered jailbreak on the other hand would require this, so this is a big victory if you like for those concerned.

The untethered jailbreak seems to have come at a time when Apple are poised to unveil the next major version of iOS at their WWDC conference next month. All eyes are on what iOS 6 has to offer, but Apple’s security team now seemingly has their work cut out in insuring that their next version of iOS is jailbreak proof – if that’s even possible.

If you want to jump straight into the download, you’ll find links and instructions over at the GreenPois0n website here. This untethered jailbreak will only work on iOS devices running 5.1.1, although it will not work with certain iPad 2 devices so be aware of that before you attempt. For those wondering, it will even jailbreak the new iPad as well.

For those that have already installed this, did it go as smoothly as promised, or did you run into any trouble? The ball is now in your court Apple, we can’t wait to see what iOS 6 has to offer.

If you are on the latest version of iOS and are seeking a jailbreak, it looks like good news is definitely on the way this week. Infamous ‘security researcher’ Pod2g has revealed that an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1.1 is now nearing completion and a download could become available in a matter of days.

While all eyes are obviously on WWDC 2012 and how Apple will take their iOS software to the next level, Pod2g and the rest of the jailbreak team have been working hard on cracking open the current version of the software, which doesn’t require the jailbreak to be installed each time the device is restarted.

A Tweet by Pod2g confirmed the news, while an additional Tweet by Xvolks who is part of the same jailbreak team reveals that the untethered jailbreak is likely to be called Absinthe 2.0. If you are familiar to the jailbreak scene, you’ll know that the original Absinthe jailbreak was released by the Chronic Dev Team and was used to jailbreak the iPhone 4S and iPad2 devices.

If you are looking to install this at the first opportunity, it’s a good idea to keep checking the Twitter page of Pod2g to find out when the download will become available. Since he said days in his last message, we’re guessing that it should be available this week.

Will this prompt Apple to release iOS 5.1.2 before their WWDC event begins, or could we be seeing iOS 6 unveiled for the first time at the event? We haven’t heard too many rumors regarding the next major version of iOS, which is somewhat unusual in previous years – but an element of surprise is always good of course.

Are you on iOS 5.1.1 at the moment? How important are untethered jailbreaks to you – do you not see it as a ‘bad’ thing any more?

It has been a good while since we last had an official iOS update from Apple, but we’re pleased to say that a new software update is now available to download. Unfortunately, iOS 5.1.1 doesn’t add any notable new features, but there are a good amount of bug fixes that should please some of you.

Just like previous versions of iOS 5, you’ll be able to install this directly from your iOS device by simply going to general settings and heading into the software update section. If you click ‘learn more’ you can also read a list of what Apple has included in iOS 5.1.1 and there are five notable bug fixes and improvements.

Firstly, Apple has improved the reliability of taking photos using the HDR option when shooting directly from the lock screen shortcut. There’s also some improvements when syncing bookmarks in Safari, as well as a much needed fix when video playback using AirPlay didn’t work as normal.

One aspect which we’re pleased to see a bug fix to though, is when making purchases from the Apple Store. We’re not sure about you, but on some occasions we’ve seen a ‘unable to purchase’ alert flash up on the screen, despite the fact that you’ve already paid for an item. When you are on a bus or train and using a 3G network to buy something off the App Store and this message pops up after having gone through the credit card process – it’s not a nice feeling. Hopefully with this change in iOS 5.1.1, it’s the last time that we see such problems occur.

We’re not entirely surprised to see that Apple hasn’t included any new features, but we just hope that they are saving this for WWDC 2012 which takes place next month. There’s still no word on whether we’ll see a new iPhone at the event, but the next major version of iOS aka iOS 6 is still a good possibility.

If you’ve noticed anything in iOS 5.1.1 that Apple hasn’t mentioned in their notes, be sure to leave a comment below. Are you expecting to see iOS 6 at WWDC or is it too soon in your opinion?
