Despite Apple’s iBooks 2 launch last week being a bit of an anti-climax, it seems the company’s bid to take over the classroom with their digital textbooks is off to a flying start as they have managed to receive over 350,000 downloads in the first three days.

While the Apple Education Event was not expected to reveal anything for iPhone and iPad fans to get excited about, it was still an Apple event which meant it was hotly anticipated. This is why it can be considered as an anti-climax as the hopeful fans who remained so were only left disappointed. It seems they will just have to wait for later in the year before they hear the news they have been waiting for regarding the latest iOS devices.

The news of the iBooks 2 success comes after figures were revealed by Global Equities Research in their proprietary monitoring system, which also indicated success with the downloads of the iBooks Author Mac application tool, which received 90,000 downloads, as reported by All Things D. For those that are unfamiliar with the app or the event that took place last week, iBooks 2 is a new app that allows for the download of educative textbooks on the iPad meaning teachers, pupils and students will no longer have to lug heavy books around as they will be available at the touch of a screen.

The Mac application iBooks Author allows for publishers to create and produce textbooks of their own. This method of production is the cheaper option for publishers, although it does have its limitations. According to reports the potential profits outweigh the limitations, especially since the production of these digital textbooks costs 80% less than the paper alternatives.

What do you think of Apple’s new iBooks applications?

With all the recent rumors surrounding then next version of the iPad one common denominator has been what type of display it will have. Today we have news of more hints the iPad 3 will have a Retina display.

Apple released its new iBooks 2 application yesterday, and it’s this that has provided clues of the display, which according to a report will be a 2048 x 1536 Retina Display. It came from a number of iconography and graphics logos included in the apps. A new bookmark icon was spotted with the label ‘iPadx2’, which is believed to indicate the company is about to double the resolution for the display of the next iPad.

The company has already used the ‘X2’ icons for both the iPhone 4 and 4S, which caters for the devices higher-resolution Retina Displays. Before now a single iPad icon size has been used, but it seems iBooks 2 is the beginning of a new oversized version to suit tablet panels with more pixel density.

The new icons were quickly taken down by Apple who released a slightly changed version of iBooks 2 with the fourth size removed. The company wasn’t quick enough to avoid the images being saved though. There has been a variety of different rumors recently about the iPad 3 or whatever it will be called.

Yesterday we told you about cases that were already on sale that hinted at a slightly upgraded device, which could be called the iPad 2S. There has also been talk that the next iPad will feature LTE support, which will be made possible because of a larger battery. Do you think Apple will launch an iPad with a Retina Display?
