Just over a year ago HTC released the Windows Mobile-based HTC HD2, now the Dark Forces Team has released a Windows Phone 7 ROM for the handset along with a demo video showing it running pretty well on the smartphone.

We have embedded the video at the end of this post, originally there was no access to any Windows Live and Marketplace services, however if you check out this link you can see a video showing the device with these services working.

You can see a video showing someone flashing the HTC HD2 to run Windows Phone 7 here, I have looked around for a complete how to guide to no avail, therefore if any of our readers have found one let us know in the comments section below.

With a 1GHz processor, a 4.3-inch display and a 5 megapixel camera the HTC HD2 still has some life in it yet, let’s just hope the Dark Forces Team continue to work hard on the ROM to smooth out any bugs and stability issues.

You can see the demo video below showing WP7 running on the HD2 thanks to Engadget, it will be interesting to see if an official WP7 ROM is released by HTC for the HD2 as this is what was meant to be the case when the HD2 was first released.

Do you think the Windows Mobile OS holds back the HD2′s true potential?

We have just informed you about an unofficial Gingerbread update for the Google Nexus One handset, but now we’re pleased to say that a Gingerbread build is now available for the outdated, but cult classic HTC HD2 handset.

As reported from Phandroid, the download has once again surfaced from the guys over at XDA-Developers Forums, and it is user m-deejay that you should thank for providing the links as well as instructions.

It is amazing, and pleasantly surprising to think that the originally Windows 6.5-based HTC HD2 handset has beat handsets such as the Motorola Droid, Droid X and HTC EVO 4G to the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update table.

However, it’s not all plain sailing. There are a few notable features which don’t work with Gingerbread at the moment, and these include the likes of the camera, GPS, the auto backlight and contact syncing. You’ll find a list of the features that do work over at Phandroid.

Head to the XDA forums for the download. If you are willing to try this out, let us know how you get on. Are you happy that the ancient HD2 has Gingerbread?

We have some great news for HTC HD2 owners still stuck on Windows Mobile now, as those clever guys at XDA Developer Forums have come up with working ports of both Android 2.2 Froyo and also Android 2.1 Eclair.

As reported from BGR, both of those ports come equipped with HTC Sense, meaning that the HTC HD2 will now be able to benefit from the fruits of Froyo, while everyone else without a Nexus One handset patiently wait for Google to release official builds of the update for their respective phones.

There is a video showing the new ROMs in action courtesy of Android Community, but if you want to install either Froyo or Eclair on your HD2, then you should head over to XDA-Developers here for a full set of instructions and download links.

T-Mobile USA customers with the HTC HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 handset may have received a new over-the-air update earlier today, this update brings your handset’s ROM to version 2.13.531.1.

Currently details regarding this update are scarce, we do know that the ROM includes two new applications, these are “My Account” and “T-Mobile Help”, both are pretty self explanatory. “My Account” allows you to check on how many texts and talk-time minutes etc you have left, “T-Mobile Help” shows users tips and tricks as well as offering access to the T-Mobile forums.

If your handset has not yet received the update you can download it manually here, you should then be able to update your ROM with the PDA Phone ROM Update Utility, as always we recommend backing up your date beforehand just incase something goes wrong.

If you have installed the update feel free to let us know what changes you have noticed in the comments section below, for more details check out the source link.

For those of you with an HTC HD2 handset, you may want to pay attention to this. If you previously complained over the lack of gaming support for the phone, you will no longer need to.

As reported from RedmondPie, the FPSECE emulator is free to download and will let you play classic Playstation One titles on your HD2.

The framerate is said to be pretty smooth, while the emulator will run a significant amount of PS1 titles, but not all. A video we have found shows Tekken 2 running using the emulator, while there is also footage of Time Crisis and Wipeout XL running with no problems.

Watch the video below and see for yourself. Do you already know about this emulator? If so, let us know your thoughts on this and your list of games that run with no problems.

Happy gaming.

For all those of you who are planning to pick up the HTC HD2 on T-Mobile, we have a nice unboxing video to show you now, giving you a great close-up of the device before purchase.

The HTC HD2 is now available as of last week, and packs specs such as a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen display, 5 megapixel camera, GPS, WiFi and also runs on Windows Mobile 6.5.

The video is fairly long, over 16 minutes actually. Check it out below – we don’t expect you to watch all of it. Let us know if you have any questions regarding the handset.

Well we did not expect to see this so soon. One cunning phone user has successfully managed to port over the entire Windows Phone 7 OS to the popular HTC HD2 handset.

As reported from BGR, the work has been done by Tom Codon, who has posted up several photos and videos showing his almighty achievement.

This will be fantastic news for HD2 owners who were still bitter knowing the fact that the HD2 isn’t due an ‘official’ upgrade to WP7S.

The port is still at an early stage yet, with lag proving to be the first issue at hand here. However, you’ll be pleased to know that GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth features are working smoothly on the new OS.

Check out the media over at BGR. Let us know your thoughts on this.

We have some good news for T-Mobile customers in the US now, as the network provider has just informed everyone via their Twitter account, a solid release date for the popular HTC HD2.

As reported from MobileBurn, T-Mobile announced via their Twitter, that the HTC HD2 will be available on March 24th.

If you’re interested in picking this up, you’ll have to pay $199.99 for it, on contract. It comes packed with a ton of multimedia features to satisfy all your needs, all of which can be enjoyed on the rather large 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen display.

The only slight downfall is that it runs on the now ‘outdated’ Windows Mobile 6.5, and wont be due an upgrade to Windows Phone 7 – especially since the HD3 is out before the end of the year.

Let us know if you’ll be getting it or not.

For those of you who have already tried out the new HTC HD2 smartphone, you will understand just how much technology the Taiwanese has crammed into the device. For those on Sprint you will be pleased to learn that a similar device will be coming to the Clearwire WiMAX network.

However, there will be a major difference, the device will come with a more powerful Snapdragon processor. This latest news does sound promising and will be interesting to see how well the new device works on the Clearwire network.

HTC is no stranger to made WiMAX handsets, launching a number of models in Russia and Taiwan. Currently the HD2 runs on the Windows 6.5 mobile OS, but there are rumors that an Android version could be on the cards, which you can read more about in our recent post.

According to an article in Unthinkable, the new Sprint HTC HD2 will be powered by Android. It will be interesting to see how Google handles the phone compared to Microsoft. We can expect to the Sprint launch the phone in the first half of 2010.

The new handset will not be called the HD2; instead it will have the name “HTC Supersonic”. There will be a 4.3-inch AMOLED screen, 5-megapixel camera, Android 2.1 OS and much more.

We often get a piece of information that you know will not come to fruit, but it is nice to think that it would. We are talking about a recent email that was sent out to beta testers for the Rhapsody Android app. This gives Ubergizmo the impression that there could be an Android-powered version of the Windows Mobile smartphone.

In that email you can clearly see a picture of the HTC HD2, Motorola Droid and the MyTouch 3G. Let us not get too ahead of ourselves here, it is very unlikely that the HD2 will be making its way over to Android any time soon, but it is still a nice idea.

We have to wonder why HTC has not offered users an Android version of the HD2, as they already have a great partnership with each other. The latest and tightest partnership yet is with the recently released Nexus One handset. Although looking at its recent sales figures, not a big deal as Google would have us believe.

The HTC HD2 had been on the Vodafone UK network, but had to sacrifice it to make way for the iPhone 3GS just recently. However, we did report that Virgin UK is now offering the smartphone to its customers.

Would you like to see a Google Android version of HTC HD2?
