We gave some very good news yesterday to HTC EVO 4G owners, as we informed you that Sprint were planning to roll out the official update to Android Gingerbread very shortly. Well we now have confirmation that the update will also be available manually too.

For those that are unaware, the update will be landing via OTA on HTC EVO 4G handsets on Monday 6th June. Aside from the interface changes that Gingerbread brings, the update will also address Gmail and SMS issues that some of you have been having.

More importantly though, for EVO 4G owners that simply can’t wait until the 6th June to arrive, you can now download the Gingerbread manually, as reported from PhoneScoop. And the process couldn’t be simpler enough. Go to your phone settings and select manual update, and if you’re lucky – you may find that the Gingerbread update is already available to install, since it’s now June 3rd in some regions.

Try it out now and see if it works for you. For those of you who are not too bothered about this, expect an official notification from Sprint sometime on Monday. It’s nice to see the carrier take care of their old customers before they focus on launching handsets like the EVO 3D on June 24th. Let us know your thoughts on this.

We have just informed you about some great news for potential EVO 3D buyers, and now we have some equally great news for EVO 4G owners – yes we haven’t forgotten about you. It looks like you’ll be getting a surprise official upgrade to Android Gingerbread soon, very soon according to reports.

It has been revealed that the EVO 4G could be enjoying a slice of gingerbread by Monday 6th June, according to images provided by the guys over at Engadget. Two images reveal official Sprint documents showing instructions for the forthcoming update, as well as the 6/6/11 marked down as update day on their calender.

The documents also suggest that the update build for the official Gingerbread update will be 4.22.651.2 and that it will take place OTA on your handsets. On a side note, we’re also hearing that the update will bring fixes involving SMS and also a fix for problems with Gmail services that some of you have been having.

The question on our minds though, is who is still rocking a HTC EVO 4G loud and proud? There are an awful amount of tempting devices available to buy now, with many more set to follow this Summer. Ever thought about upgrading this year, or are you happy with your EVO?

The news that Sprint Nextel has reported yet another loss has certainly come as a surprise, especially when the carrier has seen huge gains in postpaid customers. More customers have come to Sprint rather than leave them, which has something to do with having the first two 4G (fourth-generation) handsets – the HTV EVO and Samsung Epic.

According to an article on WSJ, Sprint has gained another 644,000 wireless subscribers in the third-quarter. The carrier has also increased its prepaid customers by 471,000; the total amount of customers for Sprint now stands at 48.8 million.

One would have assumed that with 4G wireless speeds it would have been able to help its postpaid subscribership, but that is too big of an issue for even this new technology to repair. The company posted a loss of $911 million, but this is much better than analysts had predicted.

Although Sprint had the EVO and the Epic, the likes of Verizon has been releasing smartphones at an alarming rate, and AT&T are about to do the same with the launch of a range of handsets running Windows Phone 7.

Were you shocked by Sprint’s losses?

When Sprint launched the HTC EVO 4G earlier this year we were amazed at how well the Android handset performed, but one area left a lot to be desired – battery performance. Some owners decided to purchase a Powermat, but this wireless charging system was a bit on the bulky side. However, there is a new model out and it is much slimmer than the previous model.

The induction charging company has not only slimmed down its Powermat system for the EVO, but for a range of other top selling smartphones as well. Some of these phones include the Apple iPhone, HTC HD2, Motorola Droid X and the BlackBerry Bold and Curve.

To give you an idea of just how much slimmer these new models are, you will see a video below after CJ Lippstreu from Smart Keitai purchased one. The cost of both the mat and receiver door set will cost $59.99. You can purchase just the receiver for $39.99.

Do you think that in this day and age we should rely on third-party batteries in order to have enough power to keep our cell phones running for a complete day?

When the iPhone 4 and the EVO 4G was first released Apple and HTC did not offer much in the way of accessories that was left to third-party vendors. This is still the case today, and the choice is extensive. However, one device comes along that most owners of these handsets will want. The accessory that I am talking about is Wireless Charging Powermats, and you will be pleased to know that Best Buy is now stocking them for the above handsets.

When we say stocking them, the retail giant has them in stock and is about to allow their shoppers to purchase them – although we have no details of a date or price. We can expect them to sell at a competitive price, just like most other products from the store. Photo evidance of this can be found on Joseph L. Flatley’s post on Engadget.

Both the Apple iPhone and the HTC EVO 4G will benefit from the powermat, as they have never had the best battery performance – the fourth-generation iPhone battery is a vast improvement over its predecessors, but still has a long way to go to compete with its rivals.

There are those who are not convinced of the powermat, as you will need to put your EVO 4G or iPhone 4 in a case and then place it on the charging mat. This is not exactly as good as the Palm Touchstone – now that is a device that is worth of another mention.

Do you think that the powermat is a useless accessory?

Two days ago Alan Ng reported that the HTC EVO 4G update 3.29.651.5 was made available for download. He mentioned a couple of new features and fixes, and then asked if there was anything else new? Well we can answer that for him, as it seems that HTC and Sprint has done away with the 30 frames per second barrier.

What was once something that HTC said was impossible to do with just software, we find it strange how there is now no framerate cap. For proof Ross Miller has an image on Engadget that proves that the 30 frames per second barrier has indeed been broken.

A couple of our readers have verified this, one saying that they achieved 54fps, while another said that they were averaging 52fps. What framerate have you bee getting, let us know below?

Some readers on Engadget do not seem too bothered about the increase though; they seem more worried about the hardware issues of the EVO. One issue that has been bothering users is the battery life. Some have been saying that the battery drains down much quicker than other Android handsets, so how come one owner said that he dropped just 30 percent in 8 hours?

As reported from Phandroid, the handset has now been updated to Firmware version 3.29.651.5 and adds support for syncing with multiple GMail accounts – a feature which a lot of you will find useful I’m sure.

We have some good news for HTC Droid Incredible and HTC EVO 4G owners now, as we have found some new details which suggests that your handset is also in line to receive an upgrade to the new HTC Sense UI that was unveiled recently.

According to this report from Phandroid, the Spanish HTC Twitter account revealed some very interesting details about the new HTC Sense UI – unveiled by the company at an event in London alongside the HTC Desire HD and Desire Z smartphones.

According to a tweet which has been translated, all other HTC handsets running Android 2.2 Froyo would be getting the new Sense UI, which obviously includes the likes of the Desire, HTC EVO 4G and Droid Incredible too.

If the news is legitimate, then it is great news for sure. Hopefully we’ll be able to confirm this for you soon, let us know your thoughts on this.

Do you like the new look of the updated Sense UI?

You can see 25 photos of the photos on Engadget here, we have embedded a couple of photos embedded at the end of this post, although the HTC Desire HD resembles the EVO 4G it features no kick stand nor does it features a rear battery cover.

Personally I think that the HTC Desire HD looks like a cross between the HTC Desire and the iPhone 4, which is by no means a bad thing. Do you like the the HTC Desire HD’s look?

We have some good news for those of you with a rooted HTC EVO 4G handset, as we can confirm that an update to Android 2.2 Froyo is available to you. We have the download links and a full set of instructions for you to follow.

As reported from Phandroid, the update has once again been provided by those cunning guys over at the XDA-Developer Forums. It was only a matter of time until the official Froyo update for the EVO 4G was compromised, so I bet there are a lot of owners who cant wait to try this out.

It is worth pointing out, that the 2.2 Froyo update for rooted handsets, is a little more complex than the root method needed for Android 2.1 Eclair. But as long as you follow the steps provided by the XDA Forum here, you should be fine.

For those of you willing to try this out, let us know how you get on. Does Froyo work fine for you? Download links and tutorial here.
