HTC Desire owners have been waiting for the Android update for quite a while now. At first it seemed they were not even going to get the update, before HTC back tracked and said they will make it available but with some alterations. Now we have news that the HTC Desire Gingerbread update is now live, but it’s not for the faint hearted.

The main issue with the HTC Desire and Android Gingerbread was the amount of storage space the handset has. And according to Android Community, because HTC has had to reduce the update down to fit on the handset, its only available via the cell phone makers developer site instead of an OTA upgrade.

The Gingerbread ROM has lost several HTC apps, and even the official Facebook application and all the pre-installed wallpapers except the default one have all gone. This will be available to download again and installed via the Android Market.

Now a word of warning, installing this Android update may cause some owners to lose SMS/MMS functionality after the upgrade. This is because the ROM may not have the carrier settings needed, but should be able to be added after the update. When users update Android via this route they will also lose all of their customizations, apps, emails, and other content.

This is why the update is recommended for “expert users” by HTC, and if you have a Desire from Germany, Japan, South Korea, North America, and South America the update is not available for you. This is because of “concerns raised from our partners” so HTC blocked the update in these regions.

So despite all this you are still felling brave enough to get the Android Gingerbread update, you can do so here. Many Desire owners will feel let down by this news and will wonder why HTC couldn’t work it better. Will you still download the update?

A couple of days ago we told you about the announcement that HTC were not going to bring the Android Gingerbread update to the Desire. This sparked many of you to complain, which may have something to do with the about turn HTC made. The following day the company announced it will bring the update to the handset, and now we have news that HTC are adapting Android Gingerbread to fit the Desire.

According to an article by Chris Davies of SlashGear, HTC have conformed via its Facebook page it “will cut select apps from the release”. It is not known which applications HTC will be cutting but it is most likely to be from the HTC Sense UI. The handset has only got 512MB of ROM which makes it difficult for Gingerbread and the HTC Sense to run side by side.

Some owners complained that unofficial releases of the software had managed to work on the handset, with extra space on the micro SD card being used. But this is not possible on any official release of the software. The company promised more updates next week, so could mean the update being available soon.

So it looks like the update is finally on its way, but there will obviously be some compromises to be made to get Gingerbread on the Desire. Are you bothered about losing some features of the Sense UI? Or are you just glad to get Android Gingerbread on your handset?

Lately we have heard that the HTC Desire would not be getting an update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, we asked whether this would prompt Desire owners to jump ship to iPhone, however we are now hearing that HTC has made a u-turn.

According to the official HTC UK Facebook page they will launch a HTC Desire update to Gingerbread, the statement reads: “Contrary to what we said earlier, we are going to bring Gingerbread to HTC Desire”, you can see the official post here.

We wonder whether HTC decided to bring this update due to the massive reaction which they must have received from HTC Desire owners, let’s face it there are millions of HTC Desire owners out there as it sold well in 2010 and helped HTC establish themselves in the high-end smartphone market and probably played a part in Android’s massive growth over the last 18 months.

Sadly HTC did not tell us when the update will arrive, however as you would expect it depends greatly on carriers, when we hear more we will keep you posted.

Following on from the obvious kick in the face for HTC Desire owners, we want to know where your smartphone future lies, after finding out that your handset isn’t good enough for an official upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

We were surprised as much as you were when we read the news, but due to a ‘lack of memory’, the HTC Desire is offically doomed and will stay on Android 2.2 Froyo forever, unless of course you attempt to upgrade via alternative means.

Or you could simply upgrade your handset, which as frustrating as it may be for some of you, this is the option that most of you will now take. Considering the fact that you are probably still seething with HTC after their recent admission, are you planning to stay on Android or will you take a bold step, bid your farewells and move over to the iPhone community?

It may be a pretty drastic move for some of you, but let’s face it – you are not going to stick around with the original Desire much longer knowing that it won’t receive any more upgrades. Has another Android handset caught your eye, or have you decided that now is the perfect time to try out iOS.

Let us know what you plan to do, and your feelings towards HTC at the moment. You can read the user backlash over on Facebook here.

Back in February it was reported that HTC Desire owners should expect to get the Android update eventually according to a spokesman for the company. A mid May date was later given as a time scale for it to happen but this come and went, meanwhile owners of the Desire HD received it as planned. But what will be a big disappointment today is the news that HTC Desire owners have been left out with no 2.3 Android Gingerbread update.

The company has admitted defeat and announced via a Facebook post, that it has no plans now to bring the update to the handset. According to an article on Electronista the problems with the update was put down to the Desire not having enough memory.

They claimed to be working hard to get the update on the handset but couldn’t do it “without compromising the HTC Sense Experience.” The post went on to apologize for the news but there was not enough memory for Gingerbread and Sense to run side by side.

We have reported before that the new version of the HTC Sense UI would only work on the latest devices, and this news will feel like a kick in the teeth to the millions of Desire owners out there.

We have an update as HTC have now changed their mind and said the Desire will be getting Android Gingerbread, you can see it here for yourself.

You may remember last month we revealed that HTC Desire owners should get Android 2.3 Gingerbread sometime in May, now it has been brought to our attention that the official Android Gingerbread ROM has leaked and is available to download.

If you understand the risks associated with installing a ROM which claims to be official you can download it here, it is said to feature WWE (worldwide English), we are not sure if this differs much to standard English, therefore it may be worth waiting for HTC to release the update officially.

Chances are carriers will begin rolling out the update over-the-air within the next month or so, once installed you should notice an improved user interface, better copy and paste functionality and an easier-to-use soft keyboard. On compliant devices Gingerbread would also allow for NFC, however the Desire’s internals do not allow for this functionality.

If you are brave enough to download and install this leaked ROM let us know how it went in the comments section below, did you notice any other changes which people will glad to see? Would you recommend this version to others?

Recently Proporta sent us some of their cases for a wide-range of smartphones, today we will look at the Mizu Shell case for the HTC Desire, this simple looking case comes with a lifetime warranty and a form-fitting design.

If you are like me you want a case to keep your smartphone safe from accidental damage without being to bulky or getting in the way of a smartphone’s features, the Mizu Shell does just this whilst keeping a firm grip on your HTC Desire. Simply stretch the strong silicone case around your Desire and it fits perfectly.

As I previously mentioned it is important that you have access to all of the buttons and features which you use your smartphone for. The image below shows how the Mizu Shell case has been designed carefully so that it does not get in the way of the camera lens, flash, speaker, 3.5mm headphone jack and if you scroll down to the bottom of this post you can see that there is easy access to the micro-USB port and a hole has been cut-out so that the microphone is not covered.

The silicone material used feels extremely tough and should keep your Desire safe from any accidental damage, it does not come with a screen protector, however the casing ensures that the large display will not be damaged if it you lay the handset face down on a flat surface. The case does not add much bulk to the Desire and feels comfortable in your hand, also it has a soft finish which helps you keep a strong grip.

As the case is pretty simplistic there is not much else we can say, there are charcoal and red variants to choose from, each of which costs $26.95. Head over to the Proporta website to buy yours, they cater for pretty much every smartphone on the market. Below we have embedded a few other photos of the Mizu Shell:

We reported back in February that owners of the HTC Desire will eventually be getting the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for their handsets. This news was from HTC, but today we have news that the Android Gingerbread update could come by mid-May.

Richard Goodwin from Know Your Mobile is reporting in an article that, UK carrier Three Mobile has said the update will begin arriving for its Desire owners in mid-May. The handset might have been out quite a while now, but it is still a worthy handset. With the update installed it will improve the handset further.

Many owners still enjoy using their Desire and will be pleased to hear of the upcoming software update. The network confirmed the news via its Twitter feed, and should mean other networks will also be pushing out the update soon as well.

Android Gingerbread will mainly speed up the device, and improve power consumption. You will also find a few UI enhancements like the Downloads application. This will allow users to view all of their most recent downloads.

The Desire will benefit greatly from the Android update, especially with battery life which many owners complained about when the handset was first released. Unfortunately there is no news on when the rest of the Desire range will start receiving Android Gingerbread.

Are you looking forward to get Android Gingerbread on your Desire?

HTC recently announced a range of new handsets due for release this year. Included in that was the Desire S which will be running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but owners of the current Desire range will have a while to wait before they receive any Android update.

Cnet UK are reporting that the update will not arrive before the spring, but a HTC spokesman did confirm the handsets will get the update but not until the Desire S has been released. The new handset is due for release in April, and according to the spokesman updates should happen within two months of this.

It is thought the Desire HD and Desire Z will be the first to receive Gingerbread, and the best possible scenario could be sometime in June. Then it will depend on the various networks when Desire owners start receiving the update, unless you have a sim free version which normally means you get the update as soon as it released.

According to Mobile Magazine the Carphone Warehouse and partner Bets Buy, have an exclusive on another HTC handset the Incredible S. they will b offering a matte black version which is said to have ‘unique look and feel’. This will be the first HTC phone to have this color and will be running Android 2.2 Froyo.

We have some good news for those of you who were impressed with the HTC Desire S unveiling at MWC 2011, as just a few days after it’s reveal we already have a release date and price for those who reside in the UK.

As reported from Phandroid, Amazon has once again dished the dirt on the release date and price for the device, with the online retailer becoming rather infamous for spilling the details weeks before HTC or it’s relevant carrier manage to do so.

If Amazon’s listing turns out to be legit, the HTC Desire S will be available to buy on April 18th, and will be priced at £420 – a price which obviously relates to the unlocked version of the device.

The question is though, will you be picking up the upgraded version of the HTC Desire? We say ‘upgraded’ but the list of new specs are not all that impressive. The only key factors in the HTC Desire S that stick out for us, is the addition of a front facing camera, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Other than that, we have to say that we’re a little bit disappointed that HTC didn’t beef up the device a little more.

Once we receive information regarding a US release and pricing, we’ll be sure to let you know. You can check out a full recap of the Desire S specs over on the official product listing here.
