As reported from Engadget, one user has already confirmed that their HP Slate is on the way via FedEx, and that he’ll be expecting his lovely new Slate to arrive on December 6th, which falls on a Monday just to let you know.

As Engadget point out, this could either be a minor case and perhaps a mistake on HP or FedEx’ part, or the HP’s Slate is indeed shipping out on Monday.

If you have pre-ordered one of the devices, it might be a good idea to check your email box to see if you have any shipping notifications. Let us know the results.

Hewlett Packard has yet to make an official announcement of the device, but we know that the thing is coming – we just do not know when. The smart money would be in the next couple of months, as this is when the likes of Samsung with their Galaxy Tab and other Android based tablet devices are expected to hit the market.

According to Stuart Miles from Pocket-lint, who spent some time looking over the video, the back of the device looks to have a rubberized finish. You will notice that there is a 3-megapixel camera on the rear, along with a front-facing one – something that is not on the current iPad. However, it is expected to be included on the iPad 2, which is rumored to be released before Christmas.

The HP Slate is running on Windows 7, and the video shows that it takes just 40 seconds to boot; you will also notice how fast web browsing is. Has HP got it right with the design of their Slate device?

Back at CES 2010 we were told that HP and Windows were working on a tablet device together. However, a few months later we were informed that the development had been scrapped. In a strange twist HP purchased Palm and so we assumed that they would build the Slate but running webOS instead.

This seemed all the more plausible when Windows announced that they were going to go ahead and develop a tablet device, but Hewlett Packard was not going to be one of the vendors.

So the news that the HP Slate running Windows 7 was the latest episode in this long running saga. Nilay Patel from Engadget says that we now await official conformation – we just hope that all the to and throwing has not damaged any possibility of success.

When people heard that the HP Slate will run a full version of Windows 7 some believed that this was a major pro, however Connecti.ca believe that this is a downfall as performance is not at all desirable.

Apparently the Operating System load time is frustratingly long, there are some good points such as the USB ports, HDMI dock, Flash Support, software compatiblity and built-in camera, however Connecti.ca say that “the HP Slate is simply not a competitor to the iPad . End of story.”

Perhaps HP will refine the Operating System and UI before the official release, I think they need to, what do you think?

The images come to us courtesy of website Conecti.ca, who have somehow managed to get their hands on a pre-production HP Slate and have wasted no time in giving their opinions of the device, as well as post up some juicy images for us.

According to them, the upcoming Slate is ‘not’ an iPad killer, as they have posted up a side-by-side comparison of specs which you should also take a look at if you’re interested.

Unless your French is spot on, you’ll have to make do with Google’s rough translation of their preview. But it is all about the pictures anyway.

As the Apple iPad has in some respects set the standard for future tablets the pro’s and con’s will be determined by how the two devices compare, at a glance it looks as if there are more pro’s then there are con’s.

The Intel Atom Menlow Z530 (1.6GHz) processor is a huge pro when compared to the iPad’s 1GHz Apple A4 chip, also the Slate’s ability to playback 1080p HD video is great compared to the iPad’s 720p capabilities.

Other pro’s include the Slate’s wide range of ports, these ports include plenty of memory card formats along with a single USB 2.0 port. Also worth a mention is the VGA webcam, 5 megapixel camera and pen support.

There are however a few con’s, the battery life is not as great as the iPad’s nor is the screen resolution, also the Slate will apparently not feature 802.11n connectivity, but will cost more than the lowest-priced iPad.

Recently specifications for the upcoming HP Slate have shown up on SlashGear, I must say that with better all around hardware and a more functional OS it could prove to be a very popular iPad alternative.

All of the performance hardware within the Slate seems to swamp the iPad’s hardware, the Slate features an Intel Atom Menlow Z530 (1.6GHz) processor. 1GB of DDR2 memory and a range of different flash storage capacities starting at 32GB.

The iPad’s processor is a 1GHz Apple A4 chip, it features an undisclosed amount of memory and flash storage starts at 16GB, in its favor however is 802.11n WiFi connectivity, a resolution of 1024 x 768, longer battery life and a lower starting price ($499.99).

Don’t get too excited at the moment as the specifications Engadget posted are not very helpful, all they say is that the Slate will feature an Intel Atom processor and will run Windows 7, it will also feature USB connectivity, a memory card reader, webcam and will fully support Adobe Flash.

As for pricing, rumors suggest that it will be priced at around €400 (which is roughly the equivalent of $546), also Engadget’s article suggests that the Slate should be available sometime this June.

As Pocket-Lint points out, detailed specifications on the HP ‘Slate’ are yet to be released, but from general observations, it is thought that the Slate will feature a multi-touch interface, come with a 7-10 inch display screen and will sport a built-in webcam.

It is certainly a smart move by Microsoft to announce their new tablet at CES 2009 – diverting all the hype and speculation away from the still unannounced tablet device by Apple.

As reported from Pocket-Lint, the HP Slate will be joined by two other tablet devices, manufactured by Archos and Pegatron.

He didn’t go into details on what kind of specs the Slate will have, but did mention that the device will have ‘full’ support for the Kindle e-book reader.

According to Ballmer, the HP Slate will be available this year, we’ll let you know when we have more solid details on it.
