The HP TouchPad and the Pre 3 were meant to be the next big thing from the company, as it was the computer makers’ first two webOS devices that did not have Palm branding. The tablet has now been discontinued, while the smartphone will not be launched in the US. It is hard to understand their reasoning for this, but now questions need to be answered, such as if jailbreaking will now begin and what is the future for webOS?

We reported yesterday that the 16GB TouchPad could be purchased from Best Buy for just $99, and that HP would make up the difference for all those that had paid the full price over the previous 7 weeks. The UK has also got in on the action, with retailers slashing the price to £89. However, having searched it now seems that all stock has been depleted.

So now that we know that there is a very slim chance to get your hands on the TouchPad tablet and the Pre 3 only coming to select countries in Europe now is the time to ask what has gone wrong? Firstly HP knew that they wanted to shift these tablets, so the only way they could do that was by offering to consumers below $100 as this is seen as a magic figure, as people never seem to question purchasing anything below that amount.

There has been a huge amount of chatter that suggests that the TouchPad will get jailbroken so that consumers will be able to install Android. If this does happen then those who took HP up on their offer certainly got themselves a great deal.

Do not worry about the webOS platform, as HP will continue to offer support, as they still have the range of Pre handsets. We do not know how long for though, as ZDNet says that prices of the Pre II will start to go down in Europe, which means that the device will also be discontinued. HP has said that they are not giving up on webOS, they just want to take a back seat so they can evaluate where they need to take their mobile OS for the future.

Back at the beginning of April we discussed that the HP Palm Pre 3 was an elusive device, but now new details has come to light regarding the HP Pre 3 pre-order. However, looking over on Amazon it seems that we have an unpredictable release availability, as they have a price but is currently out of stock.

We have to inform you that this is on the Amazon Germany website and has a price of €449.00, which is around $640. That price does include free shipping, and they do encourage you to place your order now. Maybe they feel that these handsets will sell like hotcakes – well big hotcakes that are too large to fit in your hand comfortable that is.

If we look at the estimated shipping dates, then we can expect to see the HP Pre 3 land in the middle of June – maybe Apple should have launched the iPhone 4S/5 in the same month after all? We can still remember when the first Pre was launched; Palm called it the iPhone killer – funny how many other phone makers have said that.

For those who do not remember what specs the Pre 3 will be packing, we thought we would give you a little refresher. You will get a 3.6-inch screen, 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor, 512MB of RAM and a 5-megapixel camera. Now there are three things wrong with this, the screen is not large enough, HP should have opted for a dual-core processor, and they should have squeezed a few more megapixels in.

Do you think that HP has got it all wrong with the Pre 3?

Five days ago we revealed the HP Palm Pre 3′s impressive technical specifications, now we thought we would compare the smartphone’s impressive specs and larger size to the original Palm Pre to see how things have progressed since the original Pre’s release in 2009.

The original Palm Pre measured in at 59.5 x 100.5 x 16.95mm and weighed 135 grams, at 64 x 111 x 16mm and weighing 156 grams the HP Pre 3 is wider, longer and heavier than the first Pre, however it is 0.95mm thinner.

In terms of technical specifications you can see a full breakdown of Palm Pre specs here and a full breakdown of Pre 3 specs here, we will now compare the most important specs side-by-side (see image below).

As you can see the Pre 3 has improved on everything the original Pre had to offer, also the Pre 3 is capable of 720p HD video capture and the new version of webOS is faster and more intuitive than previous releases, therefore if you owned the first Palm Pre you should seriously consider upgrading to the Pre 3 when it arrives in the summer.

Below we have embedded a couple of photos of the Palm Pre 3, do you like its design?

(Update: Originally I uploaded the incorrect photos, thanks for pointing that out guys).
