What’s most intriguing about this new batch is the company will be offering Apple AirPlay support as well as their own Air Jam compatible systems. These new units include the VSX-53, VSX-52, VSX-51, VSX-50 and VSX-40. Each support external zones for multi-room playback and offer seven channels of no more than 110W. Also all except the VSX-40 will feature DLNA streaming media support.

Pioneer’s Air Jam feature will up to four separate devices like iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads to contribute to the music playlist as long as they each have Pioneer’s free app and are hooked up via the AS-BT200 Bluetooth adapter which is optional and will set you back $99.

The five units will become available during the summer and will range in price, depending which model you prefer, from $450 up to $1,100. Check out the official website for more details about which models feature what.

Today it has been announced that music streaming service Spotify is now available on the TX-NR609 home cinema receiver. Marc Chacksfield over at TechRadar is reporting that Onkyo are also hinting that more units could have the feature added in the future. You will need a Spotify Premium account to use the service on the receiver.

Head of Hardware Partnerships at Spotify, Pascal de Mul, said in a statement “We’re extremely excited to be working with the legendary engineers from Onkyo, whose sound quality and product excellence is renowned”.

Owners will be able to control their accounts through their TVs, where they can get access to playlists, and what’s new and starred features. There will also be album artwork available, and users can browse the service as much as they want.

This is just another example of how more technology is using the internet to enhance features, and give consumers more choice. As we see more TVs with internet connectivity, manufacturers and service providers find different ways to engage with consumers.

Robert Silva of About.com is reporting that all of the new models have built- in USB ports for iPods or USB flash drives, and are 3D-enabled. The TX-NR509 and TX-NR609 will also come with network connectivity, which will allow for Internet Radio and firmware updates. Both models will also be compatible with an upcoming Onkyo UWF-1 wireless USB adapter.

The three new models will come with a range of features usually found on more expensive models, with Dolby TrueHD, DTS-Master Audio and Audio Return Channel amongst the options. The higher priced TX-NR609 also has Dolby Prologic IIz processing, Audyssey DSX, THX Select2 Plus Certified, six HDMI inputs, and 7.2 channel configuration.

While the TX-NR509 is a 5.1 channel receiver with four 3D compatible HDMI inputs, the lower priced TX-SR309 still features TrueHD/DTS-HD Master Audio decoding. All three models are expected to be in store by April with the TX-SR609 costing $599, TX-NR509 $399, TX-SR309 $299.

Onkyo have also announced the DS-A4 Remote Interactive Dock for iPod/iPhone, this will connect to most AV home cinema receivers, but when used with one of the company’s own units will have extra options using the proprietary RI interface jack. According to ecoustics.com the unit is compatible with all current iPod/iPhone models. This will again be available by April costing $139.

Fred Manteghian of Home Theatre has done a full detailed review of the Onkyo receiver, and he found it provides 11 speaker output terminals. Only 9 speakers can be controlled at once which is down to the software built in to the unit. For the review a set up of 5.2 was used with some great results.

The receiver is THX Ultra Plus certified and the design of the unit was found to be really thought out. It packs lots of features but was still easy to set up and use. Setting up the speakers via the Audyssey MultEQ XT32 which shows each speaker as it is being measured was straight forward.

Connection wise there are 8 HDMI 1.4a inputs, and it allows 3D video to pass through. If you connect a Blu-ray player the unit decodes Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio served up as bitstreams, and there is all the standard decoding you would expect on an AV receiver.

Sound wise the NR5008 didn’t disappoint and movies with HD sound tracks sounded great. When compared with other manufactures flagship models the Onkyo comes in towards the bottom price wise, but for most of the other categories it’s at the top.
