Guitar Hero has been a hugely popular franchise for Activision since it was first released 2005. It has gone through a quieter time with some of the later releases, and it was thought the franchise had ended. But in true rock ‘n’ roll tradition; Guitar Hero will be back sometime.

Chris Smith from TechRadar is reporting that even though Activision called time on the franchise at the beginning of this year, Guitar Hero could be back next year. Dan Winters President of Activision has said the Guitar Hero was just on a ‘hiatus’, and could even be returning as early as next year.

He was talking to gaming industry publication gamesindustry.biz, and said the franchise will defiantly be back and added “we’re not ending it”. This is after the company told the world back in February they were ending the franchise due to falling sales of the game.

This will probably be a good idea by Activision as the franchise was once successful and will still have many fans loyal to the game. If it has a break for a while when a new title does eventually come out it could see many fans ready for an update. There is also the chance that people who have yet to play the game having a look as well.

Would you like to see another Guitar Hero title coming out next year?

If a recent EuroGamer article has got its facts right Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock is now the highest-grossing video game the US has ever seen, according to their article it has generated $830.9 million in revenue in North America alone.

The second highest-grossing video game in the North America is Call of Duty: Black Ops ($787.4 million), followed by Wii Fit – with Balance Board ($736.6 million). In fourth place was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ($713.6 million).

Some of our knowledgeable readers will have noticed that three of the top for grossing video games in the US have been published by Activision, in fact if you look further down the list there are more of their titles including Guitar Hero World Tour (7th place) and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (10th).

You can see the entire top 10 list on EuroGamer, they point out that most of the games in this list come with peripherals, also it is interesting that Activision has pulled the plug on future Guitar Hero games given how well previous titles have done.

Are you surprised to see Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock topping this list?

The Guitar Hero franchise has developed and flourished greatly since the release of the original ‘Guitar Hero’, releasing titles which have expanded to drums, vocals and even DJ decks. Each series that has branched onto the current-gen consoles have all been bombarded with DLC to accompany the games’ already extensive tracklists.

Guitar Hero developers have stated recently that they will continue to release the DLC for Guitar Hero and DJ Hero games in the future even though Activision recently suggested that 2011 would not be a year where they would be concentrating on music games, apparently this decision has come about due to ‘continued support’ from the fans.

While this is good news for the fans of guitar hero titles, it seems like a wise move for the developers also. We recently posted about the new Nine Inch Nails track pack coming soon to Rock Band which will add to Rock Band’s already huge list of playable tracks. This continuation from Rock Band would have made their series more appealing to gamers if Guitar Hero would have discontinued DLC.

It would seem that our enjoyment of music games will continue to develop as Activision continue to create content for their fans, however we can not confirm any information about the next addition to the DLC at this moment in time. What music would you like to see added to Guitar Hero / DJ Hero?

Things are not good for all you fans of the Guitar Hero franchise, as we have learned that Activision Blizzard has canceled the game. This has had a knock on effect with the developer’s shares, and as a result of this shocking news has fallen by 8 percent. The company believes that their expected revenue will be $640 million in Q1 2011, this was short of the $734.70 million that analysts expected.

The company normally trades at $11.69, but following the news that Guitar Hero was finished they fell to $10.81. A reduce in shares like this is a huge blow, but one that Activision Blizzard must have foreseen after making such an announcement?

Post Chronicle said that the developer made this decision because music-themed video games were starting to fall out of favor with gamers. We do not know why this is – maybe the release of PlayStation Move and Kinect for the Xbox 360 had something to do with it?

Wired has tried to shed some more light as to why Activision Blizzard made the call to cancel the game, and its hard not to see why the choice was made. In 2007 more than 1.5 million copies of Guitar Hero III were sold, in 2010 that figure was just 86,000 for Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock. If left any longer then sales could have gone even lower, so pulling the plug was the only choice.

How do you feel about Guitar Hero being canceled?
