There may well be plenty of free navigation apps available for the Apple iPhone, but many users might prefer to purchase GPS apps from more well known companies such as TomTom or Garmin. Apple iPhone 4 owners have had access to the TomTom GPS app for quite some time now.

However, according to a recent article by Philip Berne over at phonescoop.com, Garmin has recently launched the StreetPilot GPS app for the iphone. The Garmin navigation app offers spoken turn-by-turn directions, as well as enabling users to look up addresses with ease.

As explained by Garmin over on the businesswire.com website, the StreetPilot iPhone application includes many of the features that are available on Garmin’s standalone GPS systems such as free traffic alerts, which enables the driver to avoid road closures and traffic accidents etc, and lane assist.

Another great feature with the Garmin StreetPilot app is the fact that it integrates with the drivers’ address book and iTunes music library, meaning that the driver can easily navigate to addresses from their contacts list and access and control their iTunes music while on the move.

You can read more about this app via the itunes.apple.com website. The app, which requires Apple iOS 3.0 or later, is now available to download for a price of $39.99. Do you like the sound of the Garmin StreetPilot app?

With so many GPS apps available for your Smartphone, it is hard to know which one to choose. A lot of people know they can rely on TomTom GPS navigation. CoPilot has recently announced their version 8 of the software, which is available to download now from the Android Market.

According to Shane McGlaun from slashgear.com, it is priced at $4.99, which is not much compared to others that can cost as much as $50. All the mapping data is stored on the handset, so you don’t have to rely on your phone’s Internet access like some of the cheaper and free GPS apps.

The fee of $4.99 is a small price to pay for an app that turns your Smartphone in to a GPS navigation device, which also has an improved points of interest database and spoken turn-by-turn directions with street level mapping.

Some of the new features in v8 include a customizable display, Live Local Search, Lane indicator, Live Weather, Border Control, speed Limit Alerts and PhotoNav. Which is your favorite GPS navigation app?

TomTom are well known for their stand-alone GPS navigation units, as well as an app for the iPhone. We now have some great news for iPhone 4 owners – there is a new 1.5 version of the application, which makes use of the hardware on the iPhone 4.

According to a report by Paul Miller from engadget.com, the updated app will offer navigation that is more accurate, much quicker to respond, and delivers improved graphics to match the Retina display on the iPhone 4.

Another great feature in the 1.5 version is how you can use the new navigate-to-photo function, which allows you to choose geotagged photos. This update is available now from the App Store, and is said to be free for existing members or $50 for new users.

You can also relax knowing that the maps on-board your iPhone are fully up-to-date with the latest data. Have you downloaded the update, if so was it better for you?

Yesterday Garmin issued a recall on a number of their Nuvi GPS device, which we briefly discussed yesterday. Now more information has been made available, but for those who fear that their model could be affected Garmin has a serial number checker for you to use.

The recall involves 1.25 million units, 800,000 of which were sold in the U.S. The battery – made by a third-party can overheat and cause a fire hazard, this only happens when mated to a certain circuit board.

We also gave you details yesterday of the model numbers affected, but the best place for you to check is on the Garmin website itself. Just look on the rear of the case at the bottom of the Nuvi device for the serial number and use their checker to see if your GPS is part of the recall.

Although this is a huge blow for Garmin they will not have to foot the entire bill, as the unnamed battery maker is to share the costs of the recall. Yahoo News informs us that owners will not get a new Nuvi GPS; instead they will have certain parts replaced and then returned to them.

Garmin has issued a recall for its nüvi GPS devices due to an issue with the battery. It seems that the battery, which comes from a third-party source can overheat. As you can imagine this presents a serious safety issue, which is why the sat-navs are being recalled.

This recall does not affect all nüvi devices, only those in a certain date range, and certain models. The main reason for the overheating is due to a “limited date code range,” which has been printed onto certain specific a PCB design.

Thankfully there have not been any reports of injury, but Garmin do not want to risk anything. The model numbers are as follows: the nüvi 200W, 250W and 260W, as well as the nüvi 7xx, two numbers will follow the seven.

Visit Garmin for more details where they also have a serial number checker to see if your GPS is affected by the recall.

There is no denying how bad the snow has been in parts of North America, so just imagine being stuck in your vehicle for three days. This is what happened to a couple in Oregon, because their SUV GPS system decided to take them down a remote forest road, which became impassable.

Thankfully, on the third day the couple managed to get a weak signal on their cell phone and was able to tell the authorities where they were. All GPS systems offer you the shortest route, but these are not always the safest. I found that out when travelling over the holidays.

MY GPS took me down a small road that was like a sheet of ice, I almost lost the car on two occasions, but managed to keep things under control. I was worried at the time but did not want to show it, as I had two of my grandchildren in the car with me.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the elderly couple thankfully made it home. They said that they would never forget this Christmas, as that was the day they became stranded. According to the report, the couple had been well prepared as they had food, water, blankets and warm clothes with them.

This certainly shows how much trust we put in our GPS systems, how much do you trust yours?

We have had a chance to play with Clarion’s new Mind (Mobile Internet Navigation Device), which could be bought for many reasons including GPS.

The ClarionMind could be sold mainly as a navigation system but has so much more to offer the user. The hardware shines thanks to its powerful Intel Atom Processor that runs at 800MHz. with a 400MHz FSB and 512MB of DDR2 memory.

For storage you have a 4GB SSD flash drive that is mostly used by the software and leaves around 1GB of memory before installing anything else. There are no worries here as this can be expanded via the microSD card slot.

Clarion’s MIND does not really shine above other GPS or portable devices, instead its been designed for the user that wants much more from these specific features.

You will be able to use the MIND for GPS, as a PDF viewer, to watch YouTube videos on the move, as a file manager, to send and receive email, as a contact manger and for full desktop type web browsing.

Other key features include using MySpace, RealPlayer, and a Notepad, getting weather information and reading news.

Clarion’s MiND seems to be at a crossroads and sits between a UMPC, netbook and Smartphone. The problem is you will still need a Smartphone and computer for other tasks that the MIND cannot do.

The pre-installed software is very impressive and has a very professional touch. The device impresses from the moment you turn it on and browse the main applications and control options. You realize that this device offers so much in a relatively small form factor.

While Clarion’s MiND is much bigger than other devices like the iPhone and competitive personal navigation devices, its larger screen will appeal to some buyers wanting much more than just navigation.

We would like to see good 3rd party application support added, a better battery life as standard and more memory for smoother operation. All in all the MIND is a winner and can offer a lot pleasure for those that want its unique set of features.

In the box you will find warranty info, a desk stand and car mount, a stylus in the MIND device, an in-vehicle and AC charger.

The Clarion’s MiND is available to buy now for around $699. You can get more information at clarion.com or view more photos and specs below.
