When Google Wave was first introduced to us, the search engine colossal told us that this was going to be the next best thing. Well it seems as if the wave has come crashing down, but the concept of the service will still be around on the Internet for developers.

Google had to go online yesterday and announce that Wave did not gain the attention for users as they had hoped, so have now been made available as open-source. This means that people will now be able to release their content from the service.

The Guardian points out something that has been the major issue with Wave, some us of may have heard about it, but have not tried it out. This does seem strange as it was advertised as a centralized communications tool, so how come it could not communicate its own message with adopters?

Most social networking services has gone through that stage, where they had to try and explain to the user what their existence was all about, the Guardian states that Twitter was able to survive a similar outcome, but Google Wave was not so lucky.

Were you shocked to learn the fate of Google Wave?

Google’s I/O 2010 event officially starts today, and they are wasting no time with Google Wave. Previously, the application was an invite-only beta, but Google has revealed that is it now readily available for download by anyone who wants to sign-up.

Google have also enabled integration of Wave to work with other enterprise Google Apps accounts. But users who want more access to the Wave source code will have to wait a little longer.

Wave has been available for beta testers for a while now, and has come along way with added email notifications of conversation updates, making it easier to track unread messages and remove accidentally added participants. An extensions gallery has also been added.

You can sign up for Google Wave here.

Have you used Google Wave? Are you going to try it out if not? What are your views?

Google Wave is a very popular tool, but what is it like compared to other web-based collaboration offerings? We know that Wave has a combination of a number of features, these include Google Docs, email, IM and much more all of which has its own twist on things.

If you head over to smarterware.org, they have a feature-by-feature table, that way you can compare Google Wave against the rest of them. Looking at the table you will see that Google Wave does not have a tick in every box, there are still a few features missing.

Some of these missing features include not being able to export a wave or even publish it. This table is the first part of the “The Complete Guide to Google Wave”; it is certainly worth a look, as you will learn a lot from it.

The guide will cost $6 and will allow you to learn all there is to know about Google Wave, this will make it much easier when you want to do things with your group. The paid version is for you to print, but you can gain access to a free online version to read from your computer.
