We have some rather interesting news now for those of you that own an Apple iOS device and use the free Google Mobile App, as the application has just received a major update. Not only has the app’s name now been changed to Google Search, but it also makes it easier for users to narrow their search results.

As Lance Whitney over at cnet.com recently noted, users will notice the changes that have been made to the application right away, what with the screen now resembling the one found on Google’s web page. If users tap on the microphone icon, the app enables them to speak their query.

However, if they then tap on the camera icon, they are able to search for products and other items by taking their photographs. Google then displays the familiar search resulst page and if users swipe their finger left to right, the app displays a sidebar that provides options for filtering your search by certain categories.

This includes videos, images, shopping, places, news and blogs. Tapping on any of the said categories then displays those specific results. Besides the tweaks to its search feature, the Google Search app also offers quick access to other Google Apps such as Gmail, Docs, Maps and Calendar.

There’s also an icon on the top of the screen that enables users to view and change the settings for both the app and their Google account. Have you downloaded the updated Google Search app yet? If you have, what do you think of the improvements?

You may remember yesterday how we informed you that Google Search would be coming to the Samsung Fascinate on Verizon via the update to Android 2.2 Froyo. We now have a guide to show you how to install it now if you can’t wait.

A tutorial guide for this handy trick comes to us courtesy of Android Central, who have provided some easy to follow steps over on their website.

Firstly, you’ll need to download the Enhanced Google Search provider apk which you can find here. Once you’ve done that, put the file on your SD card and then proceed to install it via a file manager. The last step is to acquire a third-party launcher such as ADW or Launcher Pro and then move the Google widget back onto the home screen.

If you have followed these steps correctly, it should be working fine for you, don’t forget to download Google Maps from the Android Market if you haven’t already.

If you want to get the voice feature of Google Search working too, you’ll need to have a rooted handset, you can find details on that over at Android Central.

Did it work for you? Have fun running Google Search on your Fascinate before everyone else! Any of you actually prepared to stay with Bing?

Following on from our article which asked you for your impressions of Google’s new Instant Search feature on their homepage, we now have a hands-on review for you to take a look at, which focuses on the mobile version of Instant Search.

The hands-on comes to us courtesy of Engadget and gives us a good look at how Instant Search handles itself on a Motorola Droid 2 handset.

On the mobile version, you’ll only get three results displayed directly below the text box (desktop has five), but as you can see from the picture below, the mobile version will also bring up instant search results as you type.

Engadget state that search speed was pretty much the same when using a 3G or WiFi connection, while you’ll be pleased to know that mobile Instant Search also brings up thumbnails from Google Images.

According to Google, Instant Search will be available on all browsers that support AJAX, and it will be available to try this coming fall. Head to Engadget for the full hands-on.

Are you looking forward to using this on your handset?

The next time you conduct a search on Google’s website, you should notice that the company has rolled out a significant update to the layout of their search results.

As reported from MercuryNews, Google has now updated their computer search layout, including mobile search results to display much more useful information for users.

For example, if you search ‘iPhone 4G’ on Google, you’ll now be presented with a new box on the left hand side, which brings up separate categories such as News, Images, Videos, Blogs and More.

While this is similar to the tabs located at the top of the screen, the bigger font makes it much more user-friendly and a lot more eye-catching.

If you feel like browsing the latest videos under the term ‘iPhone 4G’, the new video tab will bring up the newest video search results from YouTube – pretty neat.

You can read a lot more about the changes through the link. Do you like the update from Google or not? Give us your thoughts on this.
