All eyes were on Larry Page yesterday, as we knew that sometime during Google’s Q2 conference call to discuss earnings he would make one of his rare public comments. What was so special about this was the subject of the comment, which was to do with Google+ and the +1 button. We now have a munch greater insight into the company’s social future, and how they aim to make it something that we do more than once on a daily basis.

We do not want to bore you with the growth of Google’s search engine – let’s not talk about Panda – instead it is all about how well received their latest social network offering has been and the impact on not only them but you the user. There are now said to be 10 million people plus on the new social media service, and that number is set to grow at an increased rate.

One quote that we have to point out from Page is this, “Not surprisingly,” the service has been “very well received, because in real life we share different things with different people.” He has a point, and those of you who have a Facebook account will know that Google is on to something here. It is a known fact that Facebook users have issues with how they share their information, but do not think that words alone will help in the titanic battle. However, Circles will be a tough feature for Facebook to follow; get a greater insight into Circles.

WSJ were surprised by the admission from Page when he said that more than one billion items have been shared with Google+ and the +1 button, these include links, photos, comments and even videos. They still have a way to go if they wish to catch up to Facebook, but with Google they have an uncanny way of making website owners conform to a new way of doing things.

It is no secret that these new buttons from Google will influence search results, so those who have a Google+ or +1 button with a huge number of shares will more than likely show up higher in the search results. This is something that Facebook is unable to compete with, and could shape how Google is seen in the world of social media.

During the conference call Page was asked about how Google plans to make money form this new service, but we will get into this in greater detail in a later article. All we can say is Google has a plan, one that they have a great deal of experience in. Page seems more exited than ever in this new venture, as WSJ made a note of how often he said, “really excited” along with “super excited.” He does have a point, we recently signed up to Google+ and the +1 button (see my page here) and we have been impressed with the results. There is room for improvement, but we all have to start somewhere.

2011 could finally be the year that Google cracks social media, thanks to the launch of both Google +1 and Google Plus. The two are very different, yet still have the same end goal – to share with others what you feel is worth visiting. Both Facebook and Twitter along with a few others have been doing this for some time now, so was only a matter of time before Google got in on the action.

They have tried before, but failed. However, it is finally nice to see that all their hard work has paid off. When you look at how popular +1 has become in a short amount time, we can see that Google now has something that they can compete with. Only this morning a colleague said to me that Google will overtake Facebook and its 750 million users. I told him that the numbers do not add up to his claim, as when Facebook first launched Likes it proved far more popular than +1 is doing now.

Now we both have a point, yes my facts were correct, as Google has also seen that their new service is even more popular that Twitter’s button. Facebook is another story, but my colleague was correct when he said that Google has a much better platform and this will be the reason why the battle will be titanic.

Choosing what social networking button you want on your website comes down to many things, but in order to get your work noticed you will need all three of the big boys, as well as the smaller players as well. However, users will tend to press the button that they have more association with – hence Facebook being the more popular.

The issue that we have with Likes is how it will then be sent to all your friends on your profile, as you cannot separate friends from family, business etc. This has caused many problems in the past and will continue to do so for Facebook. However, Google has a solution called Circles. This allows you to create circles of contacts, which means that if you have something private you wish to say, then you can share that information with your friends only. Then if it’s to do with work, then you can just tell Google +1 to go out to your business contacts instead.

Sorry to go off subject a little, we are just showing how closely Google are bringing in both +1 and +. We believe that Google will finally win out, as those who wish for their website articles or the writer themselves to get noticed more, then Google’s new services will play a more active part in the success of those websites and writers.

Going back a year who would have thought that Google would have finally got their act together when it came to social media interaction? The reason we say this is because in the space of a month they have launched two new services, with the Google +1 (aka Plus) button being the first.

It is this service that goes into direct competition with Twitter, and it seems that Google’s code is being implemented onto websites more than its rival.

We have a few theories why we think that is, which we will get to a little later in this article. SEO firm BrightEdge has been examining 10,000 of the biggest websites over the past few weeks, and the Google +1 button has seen an increase of 33 percent in placements.

So far this month the +1 button was placed on 4.4 percent of those websites, that’s an increase of 0.8 percent compared to June. However, when you compare this to the 3.4 percent placement of the Twitter button you get to see what a good job Google has done.

Mashable would like to bring things back to reality for a while, and just like to inform us that these both under perform when compared to Facebook’s Like button, which is on 20 percent of those 10,000 sites. You might think that we should give the Google +1 button the benefit of the doubt, as it is only just over 3 months old. However, the Like button was coded onto 50,000 sites in its first week, and double that by the end of that same month.

There is still a long way to go, and Google do have an ace up its sleeve. It is no secret that Google ranks a website based on a number of key factors, and they now have a new one, how socially interactive it is. For this reason we have no doubt that a website that has more +1’s will rank much better, as Google will see that it is popular with those who know best – you the user.

For years websites were just getting by in the hope of being seen, but it was not until the introduction of social networking that things really started to take of. Some were able to take advantage of this much sooner and easier than others, but there has never been a better time to get noticed – as long as the user likes what they are reading?

When it comes to choosing a social sharing tool it all comes down to user preference. Google Plus One, Facebook Like and Twitter Follow all do the same thing at the end of the day, and that is to engage with users on the Internet. Some people have their favorite because that is all they are signed up for, whereas others would rather see who offers the greater service.

The newest of the lot is Google Plus One, and you get to +1 a website if you feel that it offers a service that will appeal to your friends or other contacts. The search engine giant believes that this is what users want, but it is still too early to tell if this will be a hit or not. One thing we do know, this will affect the search results. Use the Google +1 button on Product Reviews.

Next up is Facebook Like, and lets you share content with your friends – seems like Google has been doing a little copying here. If you Like a story that will then appear on one of your friends News Feed along with a link to that story. Not worth going in to more detail, as over 500 million Facebook users proves that they know all about this. Why not Facebook Like PR News.

Finally we have Twitter Follow, which for us seems to be the one that has been taking over the Internet. Whenever we hear of anything it seems to break on Twitter first, or is spread by the micro-blogging website faster than any other form of communication. It is for this reason why Twitter Follow has proved so popular. Follow us on Twitter.

For those of you who have a website or blog and are looking to integrate Google Plus One (+1), we can reveal WordPress plugin launches v1.2. There are two options...

For those of you who have a website or blog and are looking to integrate Google Plus One (+1), we can reveal WordPress plugin launches v1.2. There are two options for you here; the first is by automatically doing so before or after you have added content, or by manually adding PHP code instead. By doing so manually gives you greater freedom of where you want to add the new button.

The latest WordPress plugin not only allows you to add the new Google +1 button, but also other button options as well, which you can read in more detail on the WordPress website. This latest feature is expected to produce some amazing results for webmasters, and we should expect more sites to integrate the button into their websites, as we have.

We all know how social networking is key to success on the Internet, and although the Google Plus One is a little late to the party, it is still expected to become a popular tool. If you want to make it on the Internet today, then you are going to not only need Google’s help, but the help of your friends and readers who like your site as well.

We have learned that those who now use the Google +1 button have seen improvements in their search results. We have to remember that this will not be the case for all websites, as the reader needs to like what they are reading. It is no good if you have the button on your website, only to offer the reader nothing in the first place – and there are certainly a great number of websites like that on the Internet.

Are you using the new Google +1 button, what results have you seen? Do you think that this new Google feature will take off?
