Microsoft may have just unveiled their first tablet to the world, but attention is now starting to shift away from the Surface in preparation for Google’s rumored Nexus 7 device, which is odds on to make an appearance at Google I/O.

Google’s event will be starting on June 27 in San Francisco and in true Apple fashion, it looks like the majority of features have already been disclosed before the company even has a chance to show it off on stage.

The Nexus 7 is the name that has showed up in various benchmarks, along with several mentions that ASUS are the manufacturer who will be building the device. There is also continued whispers that this device will be retailing at a very affordable $199 price in line with the Kindle Fire, but what you may not know yet is potential limitations that will have to be made in order to justify the price.

A new report by DigiTimes has claimed that the Google Nexus 7 tablet will not have a 3G model, as Google will cut down on costs by shipping a WiFi version only. That’s not the only major absentee either – we’re hearing that rather surprisingly, there will not be a rear camera either, just a front-facing one instead.

While you may be shocked at the lack of these features, you could also argue that these are two features that consumers wouldn’t mind missing out on if it means that the price will stay at $199. For starters, is 3G really needed these days when there are millions of WiFi hotspots around the world? As for the camera, who regularly uses a tablet to take pictures anyway in place of a smartphone?

We really impressed with that awesome-looking keyboard that Microsoft has attached to their Surface tablet, but Google may still hit the jackpot anyway with an unbeatable $199 price. Don’t forget that it’s also going to be the first Android Jelly Bean device as well, so consumers really have a tough decision to make.

How impressed are you with the Surface? Microsoft has done a good job showcasing the device, but will it ultimately come down to which tablet has the best price for you?

Some crucial information has appeared in the form of some new benchmarks which has seemingly lifted the lid on Google’s upcoming Nexus tablet by ASUS. The device may now hit the market as the Google Nexus ’7′ and the operating system may be Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, rather than Android 5.0 as previously speculated everywhere.

The device is expected to be officially unveiled at Google’s upcoming I/O event which takes place in June, but benchmarks provided by Power Board may have just spilled the juicy details early. Nobody knew what the device would be called, but now we have learned that it could come to market as the Nexus 7.

The number 7 would obviously be a direct result of the 7-inch display screen that ASUS are building and actually, we reckon that the name is a perfect fit. The Google Nexus 7 has a nice ring to it and we wouldn’t have any objections if this is indeed the final name.

The benchmark results also reveal some other interesting information about the device, most notably the inclusion of a Tegra 3 quad-core 1.3Ghz processor and a 720p HD resolution. Based on frequent stories in the media, many consumers were expecting Jelly Bean to be next major version of Android, bring the version number to 5.0. For the first time though, we have seen evidence that Jelly Bean may actually be Android 4.1 instead, suggesting that the changes between Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean may not be too major as first presumed.

Considering that we went from 2.2 Froyo, to 2.3 Gingerbread and then up to 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets, it shouldn’t actually be too much of a surprise if Google take Android 4.0 up to Android 4.1 instead. Does this mean that we’ll see Android 4.2 as well before seeing Android 5.0? These benchmarks have provided so many new questions, so we can’t wait to see Google answer them at I/O.

Firstly, how does the Nexus 7 name sound to you? Would you have preferred a more unique name to distinguish the product a bit more, or is 7 fine just as long as the word Nexus is included? Although, how would you feel if Jelly Bean turns out to be a minor update from Ice Cream Sandwich?

After hearing exciting information regarding a possible Mini iPad and a 10-inch Kindle Fire, we’re now pleased to say that we have some new information on the upcoming ‘Nexus’ tablet from Google.

A few months ago it had been rumored that Google may be asking ASUS to build their tablet for them and now we have some more details on this likely partnership. Digitimes have claimed that Google’s tablet is well near completion and that shipments will be starting in June in preparation for a release sometime in July.

Just to remind you, this isn’t a rumored product as Google chairman Eric Schmidt already revealed last year that the company would be releasing a tablet within the next six months. While they may have fallen a little bit short of that estimation, a July release would still ensure that Google has maintained their word and the tablet could force Apple to step up their plans on a renewed iPad effort with upgrades made to the existing ‘new iPad’ that launched just a few months ago.

If a July release wasn’t exciting enough for you, we’ve also heard that Google will be unveiling their new tablet at Google I/O which starts in June. Potential specs of the device that have been speculated include a Tegra 3 quad-core processor and Google’s brand new unseen Android 5.0 Jelly Bean OS. What do you make of the decision to allow ASUS to build the device though? The Transformer Prime is obviously a lovely piece of kit, so are you happy that Google has given the Taiwanese manufacturer a chance to become a global brand in the US?

Samsung would have been another obvious choice since they built the Galaxy Nexus, but we’re pleased to see that Google is trying out different things. How does a quad-core, Jelly Bean effort from ASUS sound to you this Summer? Instant buy for you, or will you hold out to see if Apple has something in the pipeline?

We have spoke recently about Apple potentially launching a smaller version of their iPad to compete with the upcoming Google Nexus tablet, but now we have interesting rumors suggesting that Amazon may be preparing a larger version of their popular Kindle Fire tablet.

If you have been keeping up to date with rumors regarding Google’s tablet, you’ll know that one of Google’s primary motives is thought to be releasing a tablet specifically to target Amazon’s Kindle Fire, which is very popular due to its $199 price point.

What better way for Amazon to counter this move by unleashing a brand new version of their Kindle Fire, one which offers a bigger screen and another value for money price tag. Information cited at Digitimes reveals that a 10-inch Kindle Fire tablet will release sometime during the third quarter and that it may even be equipped with a quad-core processor.

The 7-inch model with a dual-core processor is selling well as it is, so Apple and Google will have their work cut out if these reports are true. The new 10-inch is unlikely to come in at the same $199 price tag, but $299 would still be a great price for consumers.

Google are keeping quiet about their tablet project for now and Apple are unlikely to talk about an iPad successor at WWDC so soon after debuting the ‘New iPad’. How highly do you rate the Kindle Fire though as a viable competitor to tablet devices from Samsung, Apple and soon to be Google? Many consumers associate the Kindle Fire as just a fancy way to read books, but as we’ve seen with the device’s other features – it does a lot more than just handle e-books.

If you had to make an instant decision on the new 10-inch Kindle Fire, a new iPad with a quad-core CPU or a Google Nexus Tablet with Jelly Bean – what would you choose and why?

Towards the end of last year, we asked you for your thoughts on whether Samsung should build Google’s upcoming ‘Nexus’ tablet, or if Google should just build it themselves. Now, a surprise rumor is floating around this week suggesting that ASUS may actually emerge as the front runner in the face to build the coveted Google tablet.

Don’t forget that this the same ASUS that were in the headlines just hours ago for apparently confirming to the world that Android 5.0 will indeed be known as Jelly Bean and that the Taiwanese company may be one of the first to support the new software.

Now a rumor over at AndroidandMe claims that Google has approached ASUS to build their highly anticipated Nexus tablet, with a key area of focus trying to get the tablet to enter the market at the golden $199 mark, which would obviously send consumers into delirium. Further details also add weight to the idea that the Google Nexus tablet will feature a Tegra 3 quad-core processor as well as a stock version of Ice Cream Sandwich as standard.

Eric Schmidt was recently quoted as saying that their tablet was ‘six months away from release’, which means that we could be seeing this just after Summer of this year. This may be a long shot, but we wouldn’t rule out the possibility of this Google Nexus tablet being the first device to run Jelly Bean either.

We’re not saying that it will launch with Jelly Bean, but it would obviously be very logical for Google’s own branded device to run the new software before any other device, rather than the Motorola Xoom which carried Honeycomb first before it. This rumor also seems to intertwine with the ASUS Jelly Bean report as well, so we’re looking forward to hearing some more gossip soon.

What are your thoughts on this upcoming Nexus tablet from Google? Has Samsung been shunted out of the picture for good after the Galaxy Nexus, in favor of ASUS – makers of the impressive Transformer Prime?

With the iPad 3 hitting the market in 2012 and the impressive Kindle Fire tablet from Amazon already out, all eyes are on Google to see if they will be releasing a tablet of their own to compete in an already crowded tablet market.

The good news as you’re probably already aware, is that Google CEO Eric Schmidt has already confirmed the existance of a Google tablet, even more exciting for fans though is that it will hit the market within six months, so it will be available just after Summer, possibly during Fall 2012 around the time of an iPhone 5 release.

We recently asked you for your opinions on which manufacturer should build the device, since it could be a device which is handled solely by Google, or it could be a Nexus branded tablet but designed by Samsung, just like Google’s last two Nexus products in the Nexus S and the Galaxy Nexus smartphones.

Now though, the latest rumors are suggesting that Google are building their device with the idea that their biggest competitor will actually be the Amazon Kindle Fire, not the most obvious choice in the Apple iPad 3. One of the biggest selling points of the Kindle Fire is its price, as it remains a very attractive proposition for consumers looking for an affordable Android tablet in what is obviously a very expensive tablet market at the moment. The Kindle Fire can be bought right now from Amazon for an impressive $199, half the price of the iPad 2.

Google has seen what Amazon has done with the Kindle Fire, and are looking to introduce a $200 Nexus Tablet with a 7-inch display screen and the latest version of Ice Cream Sandwich OS. Another great thing about the Kindle Fire is that for its cut price, it still offers users a great deal of usability, with the addition of Amazon’s own custom version of Android Gingerbread.

It can only mean good things for consumers if Google are planning to introduce an affordable tablet to compete with the Kindle Fire. Will Apple cough up as well with a cheaper version of the iPad 3? We can’t wait to see what Google has to offer with the Nexus tablet. Six months and counting.

Following on from the aftermath of tablet announcements at CES 2011, MWC 2011 and CTIA 2011, we are hearing rumors that a new challenger may be entering the fray. That challenger is none other than Google as there are whispers that they may be planning to bring a Nexus tablet to market.

Yes that’s right, a Google Nexus tablet to join along side the Google Nexus S which is already available. However, perhaps the most interesting aspect of this, is that it may be built by LG, according to Mobile-Review as translated by BGR.

This may be a surprise manufacturer of choice for some of you, so how do you feel about this? Would you be happy with LG building the device, or would you prefer the likes of Samsung, who built the Nexus S, or HTC who built the first Google Nexus phone and have seemingly fallen out of favor with Google these days.

The source also states that this Nexus Tablet may be releasing sometime during Summer, or into the early part of Autumn, meaning we could see this thing on the shelves in September. It is an exciting prospect for sure, as it may even be the first device to ship with Google Ice Cream OS, the next version after Honeycomb – now that would be worth looking forward to.

Give us your thoughts on the idea of a Nexus tablet by LG – Good business move or not?
