All the talk of the Google Nexus range in recent weeks has been about the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and its issues with sound problems, and when the device will finally see a release in the US. Today we have news of an older model the Nexus S, and that Ice Cream Sandwich testing has commenced before release.

According to an article over at Android Police Google employees have been receiving the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system as an over the air update for their Nexus S. This is done so any issues with the software can be found and ironed out ahead of an eventual release to the general public.

Some of the Nexus S owners who received the update began to take to Twitter and Google+ to talk about the update, before they were eventually deleted. Luckily a couple of these were reconstructed by Android Police before being deleted.

Two messages were posted by someone going by the name of Adel who commented that they had received Ice Cream Sandwich and “it’s looking great”. They went on to say “Yeah an OTA, but it’s an early one for Google employees so we test it further so it’s even more awesome when you guys get it. So sadly I can’t comment on it more at this time”

Another comment said that if the testing goes as planned the new operating system could be released in a few weeks time, and available as an over-the-air update. This will be good news for owners of the handset as the software gets pushed out to many Android handsets in the coming weeks and months.

Are you looking forward to Ice Cream Sandwich on your Nexus S?

We have some good news for those of you with a Google Nexus S handset, as Google has surprisingly made available the very latest version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The 2.3.4 download is a manual install and adds two very worthwhile features for Nexus S owners.

The update was originally due to drop within the next few weeks via OTA, but we can confirm that you can now download it manually from Google’s website here, as reported from Engadget. You’ll need to ensure that you are currently running 2.3.3 on the i9020T model Nexus S, and we definitely wouldn’t recommend attempting to install this on any other versions.

Gingerbread version 2.3.4 adds support for Video and Voice chat through Google Talk – two features which we’re sure you can’t wait to try out with friends or business associates. We’ve included a video below this post which gives you a preview of how the new features will look like on the Nexus S – the interface is simple, but we like it.

Providing you have the right version as stated above, go ahead and download it and let us know what you think of it. If you have any problems whilst installing version 2.3.4, leave us a comment below.

What are your impressions of Google Video and Voice chat? Is it running smooth on your 3G data plan or not?

You may remember in late January we showed you the white Google Nexus S, now we have some more photos for you to check out following ElectricPig’s hands-on with the handset, this will undoubtedly frustrate those of you who are still eagerly awaiting the release of a white iPhone 4.

You can see a full gallery of white Nexus S photos here, some of which are side-by-side with the original black Nexus S, we are still wondering why Samsung chose a black bezel to surround the large touchscreen display, do you think that a white bezel would have looked better?

It has only been roughly two months since the Nexus S hit the North America, therefore some are surprised to see a white variant on its way already, Apple’s plans for a white iPhone 4 seem to have died down despite it being 7 months since its release, therefore many believe if Apple unveil a new iPhone in June it will be white (see here).

According to another recent ElectricPig article the white Nexus S will be a Vodafone exclusive in the UK, at the time of this post we are still unsure as to whether any U.S. carriers will be offering this new variant, we will have to keep you posted as we find out more.

Below we have embedded two more photos of the white Nexus S, do you prefer it to the black version?

Anybody in the UK who’s looking to get the Nexus S, running Android’s 2.3 Gingerbread version, is in for a bit of a treat. Carphone Warehouse is now offering the phone SIM free for £429.99 instead of the original price of £549.95. That is a massive saving of almost £120!

The pre-orders in the UK started earlier this month and were at the full price of £549.95. We at PR were left wondering, what happens if you have paid for your phone upon pre-ordering and you paid the full whack?

One of AndroidCommunity.com’s readers had that exact problem and explained what he did to sort it. The reader’s name is Alistair Burns and he spoke to Carphone Warehouse about the predicament. Once the retailer had been contacted they agreed to send a cheque for the difference of £120, no need to return to the shop to sort it out. Very nice!

There has been another change with the Nexus S; the price of the contract to get the device for free. This has gone from being £35 per month to £30 per month, you can read more about it here. If you need some help deciding whether or not to get this phone, then head to the bottom of our article to view a demo video, courtesy of Slashgear.

The Nexus S has been a very highly anticipated handset this year, one of the biggest. We have already compared it to an iPhone 4, and asked if you believe it is the best Android device so far? We also brought you the announcement that pre-ordering for the device was available here.

Has the change in price made your mind up to get this phone? Let us know your opinion on the Nexus S in the comments below.

After much speculation the Google Nexus S was finally announced on December 6th, and will be released on the 16th of this month in the US. Now we can take a closer look at the specs of what many are calling a sort of Galaxy S hybrid. Has Samsung and Google gone far enough with the Specs of this new handset – are they lame or are they an evolution?

Looking at Google Nexus S page you will be met with an array of details, but it is those specs that is of most interest to you and I. The first piece of hardware and the most important is the 1GHz Cortex A8 (Hummingbird) processor; I have to wonder why they have stuck with a 1GHz and not gone for a more powerful option like the 1.5GHz Snapdragon that was rumored to be launching this year?

I cannot see any mention of how much RAM the new Google Android 2.3 handset has, so this makes me think that it will not be that much – we will just have to wait and see. As for the display and the camera, we have a 4-inch WVGA and a 5-megapixel rear camera and a front-facing VGA camera.

Looking at those specs i would have to say that there has not been much effort into the design; I would have thought that Samsung would have evolved this over their current range of Galaxy S phones, but that is not the case.

Desire Athow from ITProPortal believes that the Nexus S will fail, and has even given four reasons why he thinks this. He says that it is just like the Nexus One, as the “the Nexus S didn’t live up to expectations.” He also states that the new device is not different enough over other Android based handset; well apart from Gingerbread that is.

We will know in just over a weeks time just how good a job Samsung and Google have made with the Nexus S, until then the speculation continues.

The Nexus S is becoming one of the most anticipated phones of the year and as we told you previously that it is due for a US and UK release later this month. We have also brought you the official specs with a gallery of photographs for your viewing pleasure, we didn’t stop there, and we also offered you a Gingerbread preview video which you can still watch here.

Now we are bringing you a preview of the Nexus S as well as the device running the new Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. The video shows how the Nexus S uses NFC which offers quite an intriguing way of interacting with our surroundings.

From the video at the bottom of the article you can see that the Nexus S is really responsive and is seamlessly quick, flicking between screens and scrolling through the main screens, none of the lag that has been observed on previous Android based handsets. This will be partly down to the Hummingbird 1GHz processor core that it possesses which is the same as in the iPhone 4.

It also has a full on screen QWERTY keyboard. Google has brought in some much needed improvements to the copy and paste functionality and the texting options. With an array of animation throughout the phone like interactive backgrounds and nice little touches here and there, it has made the device brilliant. From the animation to the effortless fluidity of movement right now it seems faultless. Head on over to engadget.com where Joshua Topolsky has written an article.

What do you think of the Nexus S? Is it the next phone you will be getting? Let us know in the comments below.

Earlier today we offered you details on the quality of the camera for the upcoming Google Nexus S, which has been co-developed with Samsung. Well, we have news that the second handset to run on Android 2.3 Gingerbread (Nexus One being the first) has now got its official release date.

Not only that, but Google has now launched the Nexus S product page, which gives you full spec details and a photo gallery. We can tell you that the Google Samsung S will be ready to purchase on December 16th in the U.S. both online and at certain stores. For those of you in the UK, you will have to wait until December 20th. For more details on this visit Engadget.

So looking at the main specs I can see that the latest handset from Google/Samsung handset will have a 4-inch WVGA display, 5-megapixel camera, 16GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, gyroscope, and much more. A 1GHz Cortex A8-based Hummingbird CPU powers the handset.

Looking back at a recent post we did, we can clearly see that a few of the specs were bang on. However, there are a few that were a little off, but this is something that we have come to expect when waiting for a new device to release. Another piece of information that you might want to know, standby time is 428 hours and talk time is 6 hours. For full specs visit Google.

Are you happy with the specs of the Google Nexus S or disappointed?

Earlier today we posted an article listing what we believed to be early specs for the Samsung / Google Nexus One S (aka the GT-i9020), now we have come across information which hints at a release date.

According to this IntoMobile article this smartphone will be arriving in February 2011, which perhaps mean we will first see it at CES 2011.

If the specs we spoke about earlier are accurate, the Nexus S should set a high standard for other high-end smartphones in 2011, with a 1.2GHz processor, Android Gingerbread, an 8 megapixel camera and 1080p HD video capture/playback it should be a force to be reckoned with.

As we hear more information regarding the Nexus S we will keep you posted, will you be interested in it if it arrives in February 2011?
