Yesterday Google I/O 2011 kicked off, not only did they give all attendees a free Limited Edition Samsung Galaxy 10.1 but Google also revealed details regarding their next major Android version, this will be called Android Ice Cream Sandwich.

For those of you hadn’t already noticed each Android version gets a name of a dessert to accompany it (and they are in alphabetical order), previously we have seen Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, FroYo and Gingerbread, therefore it is no surprise to see this version called Ice Cream Sandwich, we do not know what version number this will be but the last release was 3.1 so expect anything between 3.2 and 4.x.

If you remember Android 3.0 / 3.1 Honeycomb was solely intended for tablets, whilst Gingerbread is the most up-to-date version for smartphones, it is thought that Ice Cream Sandwich will be a sole platform for both smartphones and tablets. This suggests that they will take the best from both Honeycomb and Gingerbread, which may be why they put the word “Sandwich” in its name. During the presentation Google confirmed that this OS version should arrive sometime during Q4 2011.

We got to see some Ice Cream Sandwich screens at Google I/O, new features included face tracking for the camera and focus shifting which is based on voice recognition, lots of the changes are being kept quiet for now, however we hope to hear over the next few days, we will keep you posed. You can see a few photos from Google I/O 2011 via this link.

What new features would you like to see Android Ice Cream Sandwich bring?

Google I/O 2011 has kicked off and people who have attended have all been given a white Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Limited Edition, Engadget were lucky enough to attend and have posted some photos and a video of the tablet.

In the video (embedded further down this post) we get to see its beautiful design, the rear of the tablet has a vanilla color, if you look closely you can see that the vanilla back is covered in Android figures, also there are chrome accents around the side. If you have not checked out the Galaxy 10.1 specs you can check them out here.

One thing which is hard to ignore is the super-thin design, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is just 8.6mm thin, this is thinner than the iPad 2. There has been no word on pricing yet, therefore we will have to keep you posted as we hear more.

Below we have embedded a photo of the rear of the device, you can clearly see the attention to detail Samsung has taken with the dozens of Androids on the back cover, also you get to see a glimpse of the 8 megapixel camera on the rear. You can see a fully gallery of images via this link.

We are unsure whether the white Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is limited to attendees of the Google I/O or if Samsung plan on manufacturing a few hundred for sales, therefore we will have to keep you posted.

Remember to check out the image and video embedded below, do you like the design?
