Google Street View was first launched in May 2007 and at first concentrated on major cities in the United States, but now the service has been rolled out to cover a large part of the World. The service gives users the chance to look at prominent locations in a panoramic view.

It was first announced by Google that they were starting to collect images in South Africa in September of last year. They began taking photographs in locations Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, and Johannesburg.

The service that is integrated into Google Earth and Google Maps will be great for tourists and football fans heading to South Africa for next month’s FIFA World Cup.

As reported from the GEarthBlog, Google are now allowing users to request a photo shoot for their business, which will then be highlighted on Google Places. For example, if you search the name of a particular business within Google Maps, and want to check out some photos for that business, this is what the end result of Google’s photo shoot will produce.

This is just the start, but if it turns out to be a success, we could see internal photos integrated into Street View very soon. There is a very useful video demonstrating how this could work in the link above. Make sure you check it out and give us your thoughts on it.

As reported from RealEstateWeb, it now means that residents in South Africa who are eager to find a new home, or do some site spotting around various cities in the country, will be able to do so in the coming weeks.

Cities included on Street View using the Google Earth tech include Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.

This is also great for tourists from the US and UK heading over to SA for the World Cup, and are looking for a place to stay or attractions to visit during the two week football tournament.

As reported from ITProPortal, this is great news for residents in the UK planning to visit the likes of Thorpe Park or Alton Towers, or even tourists who dont know too much about what each park looks like.

If you head to the UK version of Street View, simply type in the theme park of your choice, and you’ll now be greeted with a series of 3D images for each section of the park.

The same applies for the likes of Chessington, Sea Life and Legoland Windsor. Try it out for yourself now – it is great fun.

As reported from MiltonKeynes.co.uk, UK MP Mark Lancaster thinks that the laws on Street View need to be tightened, or at least seek customers approval, before their homes are captured on Google’s cameras.

He stated in a recent interview: “Many people are uncomfortable about having their homes on show. They should be asked if they wish to be included.”

At the moment, Google do not break any privacy laws on Street View, as their cameras film on public land and blur any faces or licence plates.

Home owners are free to have their homes removed from the service, but only after it has appeared online. Let us know your thoughts on this.
