We have all been aware of the Chromebook for sometime, but a Google-branded notebook has been put out of the question by Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who also says that Chrome will not be finished for a couple more months.

But with all the possible talk of a Chrome branded netbook, especially from Engadget who think it’s a possibility — we ask this question. Is the netbook market dead?

With the current surge of tablet devices, namely from Samsung and Apple who are leading the pack — netbook sales are down. Right down. Infact, they are selling in negative values according to Seattle Pi Blog. So what does this mean for Chrome OS and the netbook?

Chrome’s future as an OS may not seem so certain at the moment, and currently is labeled as a netbook only operating system. If this continues to be the case then Google and it’s OS could see the end before it even began, according to those negative figures. So why not port it to use on a Google branded tablet? I’m hoping the bigwigs are looking strongly into this.

Other problems that could possibly hinder Chrome OS’s future would be two reasons. It is unusable without access to an internet connection, and it’s not compatible with hardly anything at all yet.

How can Google overcome these issues? In-built 3G or 4G would be a step in the right direction, and although compatible to a certain extent with the Microsoft Office suite with Google Docs, it will not run any of your favourite Android apps. It’s hard to believe that with such a strong fan base of Android users, that Google have not even taken this in to consideration. They know what works now, so maybe there could be some sort of integration sometime in the future.

What Chrome does have going for it though is simplicity and good design. Apple proved this is what people want with the iPad, along with the ‘it just works’ attitude. Google Chrome Web Store is also expected to be launched at tomorrow’s event, and we hope that they come out fighting with all sorts of new powerful, exciting new software to be used with the new OS. This is Google after all.

Personally, I think they will roll out the new OS on netbooks and then try their hand at tablets. After all, they have conquered just about every technological angle they could have now. What’s next for Google?

As reported from BGR, we were given a preview of some of the types of Apps that will be available on the store. These Apps will run in native code such as Flash, and you’ll get a choice of either free or paid apps.

Attendees at the event were shown a few demos of some of the Apps that will be available. These included Dark Room, Lego Star Wars and Plants Vs Zombies.

Furthermore, Google also announced that their Web Store will offer magazines to download, such as Sports Illustrated.

What are your intial thoughts on Google’s web store? It is early days yet, but do you think it could rival Apple’s App Store or not?
