Each year there are a host of new useless gadgets that come onto the market, but how do you know what gifts you should avoid this season?

There are certain gadgets that you know has bad news written all over them; a nose hair trimmer and a walk along melon cooler are just two of them. Another two that jump out at me are a coin counter and a cheap all-in-one remote. You can see by some of our hands-on reviews that we have been sent a few useless gadgets, but you will be happy to know that they are still in storage – how could we offer them up as gifts?

The easiest way to avoid these useless gifts is simple, if you believe that you would not want one of these sent to you, then chances are neither will the person receiving the gift. OK, that is a little wrong, as I do know a couple of people who seems to love tacky gifts – my brother being one of them.

There are so many great gadgets on the market that we struggle to understand why anyone would want to purchase a useless gadget? We fully understand that these gifts can cost a small fortune, but there are a few people in your life that deserves to have that special gift. If you know that the person you are buying for loves gadgets, then this makes it much easier, as there has been a host of new technology launched this year. It’s so easy to go for the most obvious, but that could be a mistake because they may already have it.

Looking around there are a number of websites that offer you some gift ideas, we already gave you a few ideas a couple of week ago. However, the likes of PC World offers a more extensive guide, which they are calling “Cool Yule Tools.”

Some of the gadgets are obvious choices, but there are some that would never have thought of, such as a 3M Mpro 120 Pocket Projector. However, if you want something a bit more updated, then you should read our hands-on review of the 150 model.

However, it is CNET Reviews who has the most extensive holiday gift guide for 2010. They have broken this down into different categories, which does make it easier if you kind of know that gadget you are looking for. There is even a video that will help you with choosing that perfect gift.

There are so many brands to choose from, and it is HP that has proved the most popular over the years, which is why we have decided to take a look at the Pavilion dv6t Select Edition.

This laptop has a 15.6-inch Brightview display, so great for watching HD content. You have everything you need with this device, but its not going to be easy choosing what you want. I say this because when you go to buy this on the HP website you will be overwhelmed by the choice of hardware options.

Take the processor for example; you have the choice of a range of them from an Intel Core i5, or i7; all with varying speeds and cache. Then there is the operating system choice; you have three different version of Windows 7 to choose from.

This is the same story with the graphics card; there are four to choose from; so you will have to determine what you will be using the laptop for.

Overall customer reviews seems pretty positive, with HP scoring the Pavilion dv6t Select Edition 4 out of 5. Some owners say that the notebook is awesome, while others say that the improvements over previous models are good; but still has a few issues. There was one review that said that the design was nice, but the small screen resolution forced them to return the device.

Back in 2008 and 2009 we did notice that some store websites started to feel the strain of the made online rush – we now wonder if they are better prepared? When you visit the Walmart website, you will see right away that all these deals are not in stores, so you do not even have to step outside your door. The only issue I have with these deals is the fact that you cannot see how much money you are saving – maybe it’s all about the free shipping then?
