As auto owners all over the world will be well aware, gas prices are not getting any cheaper, and it’s gas prices alone that is often a key factor in what car model consumers decide to pick up as it could be the difference between saving hundreds of dollars on your fuel bill at the end of each month.

With this in mind, you’ll be pleased to know that we have come up with a couple of gas prices apps for the iPhone which will help you to save money each month by giving you a breakdown of what you are spending, not to mention being a excellent reference guide if you forget what you have spent on fuel on a particular day.

The first app is called GasPrices, as this handy little app allows you to search for the cheapest gas prices in your area, where ever you happen to be. You can also view cheapest gas prices in list format, or on the included map, which gives you directions on how to find the stations as well. Best of this, this app is a free download from the App store, so go ahead and try it now.

Other free great gas price apps include Gas Genie, Gas Price Predictor and Local Gas Prices, all of which are also free to download from the App Store now. Try them now and let us know your thoughts on them.

Do you use your iPhone to search for the best gas prices? If so, let us know which app you use and how reliable it is.

A few days ago Daniel touched on the subject that gas prices were getting out of hand, and that apps such as GasBuddy and GasBook can only do so much to saving you a few cents. This is all very good, but what we need is either big savings or a new fuel source now that gas prices are out of control – but what are our alternatives?

We know that the holly grail of cleaner and cheaper fuel will come from fuel cell technology, but we recently discussed that this might not see the light in production cars until 2015, which some believe is too late. We know that gasoline is running out, but we have to wonder how high the price will go before that day comes? We hear so often how angry U.S. drivers are with how much they have to pay at the pump, but they need to take a reality check and visit the UK some time.

There are already a few alternatives on the market, but just how practical are they? First up with have Ethanol, which is alcohol-based. You will be shocked to learn that this has been produced from fermenting corn, and has a mixture of 85 percent Ethanol and 15 percent gas. So it still needs gas, but not as much as your Toyota Prius.

Next up is Biodiesel and is made from a combination of soybeans or recycled vegetable oil, what makes this even better is that it does not produce any harmful gases. However, price is still an issue, as it is not in the mainstream.

The best and current alternative has to be the electric vehicle. These vehicles have zero emissions, but the technology still has a way to go. There are only two great EVs that come to mind, the Nissan Leaf (which has just scored high in crash tests) and the Tesla range of cars. However, these are still not practical for two reasons, the price of the vehicles themselves and their range – which are still very low.

So it seems that we do have a few choices, but we need something that has good range and practical to use – meaning easy to get hold off.

What gas alternative do you use?

We recently gave you a list of some of the cars with the best mileage and also told you about some iOS apps which will help you to extend your precious gas mileage, but now we have a list of some of the worst 2011 cars that don’t impress when it comes to gas mileage.

If you are currently searching for a new car, and you want a new 2011 model, you’ll definitely need to know which cars are the best for saving money on gas, and which cars are the worst, since car dealers are very unlikely to admit to such shortcomings when they are trying to sell you their motor.

Luckily for you, that’s where we can help, and we have a strong list of contenders with regards to the ‘worst gas mileage cars for 2011′ title. First up is the 2011 Nissan Titan and according to Autoropolis, the EPA has classified it as the least efficient truck of 2011 so far. It’s priced at around $28,820 and customers buying one should expect to make frequent trips to the gas station to fill up.

Another contender is the 2011 Audi R8 Spyder, aimed at the more luxurious consumer with a price tag of around $112,152. If you compare this model with other sports cars on the market at the moment, the Audi R8 is probably the least fuel efficient choice you can buy. However, if you’re paying over $100,000 for a car, fuel costs are unlikely to be a major problem for you.

If you want to read on and hear which other car models make it onto the worst car mileage list, head over to Autotropolis here. Alternatively, we’ve found another article over at DMV which lists several other motors that you should avoid.

If you are currently driving a car which you think should be criticized for it’s gas mileage performance, leave us a comment below.

We’re sure you have your own little methods on how to save a little bit of gas whilst driving, but how about reading some professional help online if you’re getting increasingly worried about the amount you’re having to pay on fuel each month.

At the start of the year, we gave you some of our own tips to help you get the most out of your gas mileage, but now we have found some other tips which may help you. The guide comes from eHow and they have listed eight simple steps for you to try out the next time you hit the road.

One common reason for fuel running out quicker than usual is air pressure inside your tyres. You should head to your nearest garage and check to see if the pressure is too low in your tyres. If so, simply add more air to maximise your gas mileage as much as possible. There are also more useful steps like this over at eHow – take a look and let us know if they work for you.

Failing that, we also thought we’d point you in the direction of a very useful iPhone app called GasBook, which searches for cheaper gas prices amongst thousands of stations across the U.S. The app is certainly held in high regard as it has also been featured on CNN, if you needed any further reassurances. It is available to download now for $0.99 US, visit the iTunes link here.

U.S. motorists were unfortunately faced with a sudden increase in gas prices recently, which analysts say is due to the current situation in Libya. The average cost of regular gasoline in the U.S. has in fact increased by 33 cents a gallon just in the past two weeks.

As John Garcia over at abclocal.go.com recently reported, the price for regular unleaded has now become very close to the $4 mark at some pumps in Chicago, and many drivers have been left frustrated. One driver even described the recent increase as ridiculous.

Tim Shaw – who uses his van to take the Chicago Boyz Acrobatics team to their performances – said that it now costs about $100 to fill his tank, compared to around $80 a few weeks back. Motorists still have the usual early summer gas price hike to deal with yet.

The situation has even gotten the attention of both President Barack Obama and the Chief of Staff William Daley, who now claims that they are currently considering their options and tapping into the country’s emergency supply of petroleum is a possibility.

According to a recent article by Mariano Castillo over at cnn.com, the recent increase is the second biggest price hike in the history of the gasoline market. Lundberg Survey publisher Trilby Lundberg says that U.S. motorists should expect prices to continue increasing.

The recent Lundberg Survey sampled gasoline prices at around 2,500 different gas stations, with San Diego having the highest average gas price at $3.87 a gallon. The auto industry has got to see some sort of solution to the gas price situation in 2011.

You can view the latest news video below this post. Do you think the U.S. government should tap into the country’s reserve?
