We have had numerous teases over the past few weeks about the possibility of quad-core phones showing up at this year’s CES event in Las Vegas. We thought HTC may be the first manufacturer to have the honor of this industry first, but we can tell you that the first quad-core smartphone to be shown has come courtesy of Fujitsu.

The Japanese company is not known for their smartphones, as most of you may even own a Fujitsu-Siemens branded computer since this is their main area of business. Like a growing number of other companies though, the temptation to enter the blooming smartphone market is as high as ever and the company has used CES as their stage to deliver the world’s first quad-core smartphone to a mainstream public audience.

Unfortunately, the device is still a prototype and was kept behind a glass unit so nobody could get their hands on it yet. There is also no name attached with the device so far, but the good news is that Fujitsu has already confirmed an initial list of hardware specs for the device, as well as confirming that the device will be ready for a proper showing at the MWC event in February.

So let’s move on to that quad-core chip, as according to Fujitsu their device will feature NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 processor which features on the likes of the ASUS Transformer Prime tablet and is clocked in at four cores running at 1.2Ghz each. Other specs include a mouth-watering 13 megapixel camera, LTE support, and a 4.6-inch display which Fujitsu are calling a ‘liquid crystal’ screen.

Another interesting aspect of this device is that it will feature a fifth processor which is hidden away and will be primarily used to conserve battery life when the phone is used for demanding tasks. For a phone that nobody has seen yet, this is full of promise and we can’t wait to see more at MWC. Check out an image of the device below courtesy of Droid-Life and let us know your thoughts on it. Bring on MWC 2012.

Are you ready to drop your current smartphone for a quad-core powerhouse?

When we introduced our readers to the Fujitsu-Toshiba au IS12T we were blown away by the fact that it featured a 13.2 megapixel camera on the rear, however if you were not impressed by the fact that it runs Windows Phone 7 we have some great news for you – another similar smartphone has been revealed, but this runs Google Android.

This smartphone is part of Fujitsu-Toshiba’s IS Series, it is called the Arrows Z ISW11F and it features a dual-core 1.2GHz Texas Instruments OMAP4430 1.2GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of ROM, a 4.3-inch 720p LCD display, a 13.1 megapixel camera on the rear (with autofocus and capable of 1080p HD video capture) a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera and a waterproof body. In terms of connectivity it boasts WiMAX, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, GSM, CDMA and there is also HDMI-out and a microSD memory card slot.

In our opinion the Arrows Z has quite a desirable design, there will be pink, black and white variants available and it will measure in at 64 × 128 × 10.1mm (weighing 131 grams) – check out the images below, do you think it is a nice-looking smartphone?

You can find out a little more about this smartphone over at TechCrunch – we are told that it is headed to Japan via KDDI and will cost 525 yen, however currently there is no sign of a release anywhere else on the globe – but we would certainly love to see it shake up the European and American smartphone market – would you?

These days it is harder for smartphone manufacturers to come up with a product which is truly unique, however Fujitsu and Toshiba have done just this with the au IS12T which recently showed up on Engadget, what makes this so unique? Well it features a 13.2 megapixel sensor and a waterproof design which complies to IPX5 ratings.

In terms of tech specs we are impressed by the 13.2 megapixel sensor which features autofocus, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, WiFi b/g/n, 3.7-inch WVGA display (800×480) and 32GB of flash storage, however we must admit that we were slightly disappointed to see it use the same processor as the HTC Thunderbolt. Yes, that’s right, it features the the Qualcomm MSM8655 CPU, this usually runs at 1GHz, surely a dual-core chip would have helped out when it comes to photo and video capture, especially if people are looking to capture 1080p video.

Earlier we told you that this would be the world’s first Windows Phone 7 smartphone to run Mango, currently we don’t know whether this smartphone will arrive in North America or Europe, however Engadget say that it will hit the Japanese network KDDI sometime in September. We would like to see this handset hit other regions, would you?

Below we have embedded a few photos of the Fujitsu Toshiba au IS12T, as you can see it is not a bad-looking device and there is a lime green / yellow model along with pink and black variants, you can clearly see that the rear of the camera is dominated by the rear-facing camera, also we think we have spotted a front-facing camera in this photo. You can see a gallery of hands-on photos here.

In the first paragraph we briefly mentioned that this smartphone was compliant to IPX5 waterproof ratings, we thought that this would take some explaining, so we looked into this in a bit more detail. We are by no means experts on this matter, however we are told that the IPX5 rating test involves a 6.5mm nozzle projecting 37.5 litres of water at a device, the test lasts 3 minutes and by the looks of things the au IS12T passed this test with flying colors. This should mean that this new smartphone will be pretty resilient to water damage, that said you wouldn’t want to use it in the bath!

Do you think that the Fujitsu Toshiba au IS12T would do well in the U.S?

The new Fujitsu F-09C phone on Japan’s NTT DOCOMO has a release date for the high-spec water-resistant mobile phone with rotating 3D display.

Yesterday Fujitsu announced that its new docomo PRIME series F-09C mobile phone would be available from NTT DOCOMO, Inc. from June 24th 2011 in Tokyo Japan. The Fujitsu F-09C has a rotating screen with a 3.5″ LCD display that allows you to view 3D images. The 16.3 megapixel camera, touchscreen display and smart browser are just few of the great features available.

A large rotating display is ideal for viewing the 3D function on landscape mode and there is no need for special glasses. You can take 3D pictures and also transform pre-existing photos into three-dimensional images and email them. Using Dolby Mobile lets you view 3D videos in 5.1 channel surround sound. The F-09C has four 3D i-appli applications installed.

With the 16.3 megapixel camera, you can take two photos at the same time that will merge for a more realistic experience. Camera effects like face shrinking with sharp and soft effects allow you to smooth out your subject’s face structure. A great surround sound microphone will record quality audio and the Zoom microphone amplifies sound in relation to the cameras zooming distance.

An easy-to-use smart browser will access the internet at rapid speed and supports a user interface for touch-based operations. The touchscreen has a standby launcher for quick easy use, and just a touch will access the customization of wallpapers, calendar, memo pad and the clock. With your finger you can write messages on your wallpaper and edit the size and area.

The IPX5 water resistance design allows original use after general water spraying and the IPX8 will still work after being immersed in tap water to a depth of 1.5 m for 30 minutes that is including the camera. The Wi-Fi compatibility enables easy file sharing with a PC. There is also a full-featured electronic multimedia dictionary.

Would this be the next phone of your choice? Fujitsu’s F-09C phone comes in three colors black, white and red. For more information, visit fujitsu.com.

Information is made easy as Fujitsu partners with Hospital to help using a clinical guidance system with color e-paper.

Sapporo Shirakaba-dai Hospital and Fujitsu Limited have today launched a clinical appointment guidance system that uses color electronic paper otherwise known as e-paper for patients to use for their individual requirements. Fujitsu’s proprietary wireless communications technologies are accessible with e-paper by electronic cards.

The information contained guides patients to testing rooms or examination rooms using individual medical records. This helps with letting the patient in waiting rooms know when their doctor is ready to examine them, check in times and payment procedures. Information is obtained about queue places in real-time, so patients can move about without being anxious or restricted to a waiting area.

Improving patient services, efficiency, and conserving energy by streamlining the charging electronic holders will allow the Sapporo Shirakaba-dai Hospital to save on costs as well as help will the ease of patient services. Fujitsu and Sapporo Shirakaba-dai Hospital have worked together to develop the clinical appointment guidance system starting with full operations in April 2011.

These easy to use IC-equipped registration cards work by insert with details of current visitors schedule, queue positioning and updates using message displays. With color e-paper for its display, hardly any power is used even when on, a single charge will last for one week, reducing power consumption and CO2 emissions.

Though tablets tend to get the headlines at the moment, we still get the odd phone surfacing to take some of the attention. Today we have news of a smartphone that’s so smart it’s dual-booting. The Fujitsu LOOX F-07C runs both Symbian and Windows 7.

When this 4” slider device was first written about, it wasn’t sure if the details were correct, but today it was confirmed that its dual booting is official well at least according to NTT DoCoMo’s preliminary spec sheet.

The news comes from an article by Richard Lai over at Engadget which features a full spec sheet. Amongst the impressive specs of the LOOX F-07C, as well as its dual-booting software, there is 32GB eMMC disk space with the option of additional storage with microSDHC, 1GB LPDDR400 RAM and a 1.2GHz Intel Atom Processor.

The battery life seems to be the only downfall with this device, even though you are offered 600 hours standby time when in phone mode, but when in Windows 7 mode just 2 hours before being switched back to phone mode.

Check out the rest of the article from Engadget by clicking the link above. There you will find the pricing of the device as well as more details on specs. Does the dual-booting feature interest you? Let us know in the comments below.

The many tablets of 2011 are still multiplying and by now you’re think they’re all the same and you’ve seen it all think again, as today we have news of a new tablet that has a little something extra with it. The Fujitsu Lifebook TH40/D at first may look like a typical tablet only to reveal a keyboard which slides out from underneath.

You may also already be thinking there is a fine line between a netbook, slate and the tablets that get released on the market today. If that’s the case, that line has just been blurred. The keyboard actually acts as a stand holding the screen in a comfortable viewing position.

The 10.1” device’s keyboard has been nicknamed the ‘touch-type keyboard’ by the manufacturers although it is not actually a touch-screen judging from the photos. The Lifebook weighs 1.1kg and is just 17.4mm thick.

Overall little is known about the new tablet so far, so we will just have to keep our ears and eyes open for more on specs, price and release date. According to the article at the official Fujitsu website the TH40 is compatible with Blu-ray which suggests USB ports for the external Blu-ray drive.

Check out the link above for more about the tablet. What do you think of it? Does the slide out keyboard feature interest you? Let us know in the comments below.
