We have brought you various information in the past about how to save money on your car and which types of vehicle are specifically designed for fuel economy, but now we have some tips which come straight from the U.S Environmental Protection Agency.

They have come up with a series of steps for the average driver to follow, complete with useful diagrams to back up their recommendations, making it easier for the reader to digest.

Their first tip is to drive efficiently, and they have divided this into sub categories with information on driving sensibly, observing the speed limit, removing excess weight from your vehicle and using cruise control and overdrive gears.

Next up is keeping your car in good shape, and to do this you’ll need to ensure that your engine is properly tuned and that your tires are properly inflated. There is also some very useful tips on checking which type of oil you are using, and also evidence that changing your air filter can save money on fuel in the long run.

Two other important areas to consider in terms of fuel economy are commuting and travelling. Deciding when to travel to work and avoiding peak traffic times can often be the difference in saving a lot of money on fuel each month.

If you’re interested in reading more, head to the official government website here. Alternatively, if you have any ‘fuel-proof’ tips which have saved you money in the past, be sure to share them with us below.

If you are planning to go on a road trip this Summer, we have some essential information to give you now which will help you to prepare for your journey. We’ve also located a fantastic iOS app which will help you to plan on your iPhone or iPad too.

Firstly, on to the road trip essentials and as you can imagine, there’s plenty to remember. The first and possibly one factor that you may always forget is space. It’s not nice going on a long road trip if you can barely move in the car, so a good idea is always remember to plan your trip with space in mind so your group is nice and comfortable inside.

Next up is ice. Most of you will agree that there’s no better feeling than having an ice cold drink when you’re stuck at crossroads, trying to pinpoint on a map which direction you should head to next. Keeping a cooler box handy inside the boot or indeed inside the car can ensure that the passengers and also the driver can enjoy an ice cold beverage when needed.

If you’re interested in hearing more, head to the useful list over at Travellious for more road trip essentials. Alternatively, you may enjoy this other article we’ve picked out for you from Disney’s Family Fun, which lists some road trip essentials in check box format.

As for the free iPhone app, simply head to the app store and download ‘Road Tripper’. It’s a great app which allows you to map out your entire journey, ensuring that the chances of you getting lost are kept to a minimum. Best of all – it’s free so you can have no complaints.

Do you have any essential road trip advice for our readers?

We have some good news for those of you who are looking to buy one of the smallest 4-wheel drive cars on the market. We have picked out a list of some models for you to consider, ones which also have the added advantage of being very fuel efficient too.

You may have seen some of our previous articles on fuel efficient cars, as it’s clear that it remains one of the most important factors when buying any car, especially since fuel prices are becoming increasingly expensive much to our dismay.

However, today is all about the smallest 4-wheel drive cars, and one model that you should consider is the Suzuki SX4 Crossover, available for around $16,099, which is apparently the lowest priced four wheel vehicle in the US according to Buzzle.

Features include a 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder engine, five door hatch styling, built-in navigation, tilt steering wheel and a height-adjustable driver’s seat. In terms of fuel mileage, it will offer you around 22MPG in city areas and 30MPG when you’re on highways.

If that doesn’t take your fancy, why not opt for the more luxurious Audi S3 model which is considerably higher at around $65,500. Features include a 265 brake horsepower (bhp) at 6000 rpm and it can reach 0-60 in around 5.5 seconds. However, the fuel economy is definitely not as good as the Suzuki SX4, so it may be a case of sacrificing a few dollars to get a better looking model on the road.

You can see the full list of top small 4-wheel drive cars here on Buzzle. There’s not many we agree, so we’ve found another list over at eHow here which you may find interesting. Let us know if you have a recommendation to share.

Earlier on we gave you some information on some of the top used cars that you could pick up for under $10,000, but now we have some details for those of you who are searching for the most fuel-efficient pick up truck this year.

We have picked out a very useful chart for you, which separates fuel-efficient pick up trucks by various sizes. For example, fuel-efficient small pick up trucks include the Toyota Tacoma 2WD, carrying with it a fuel economy of 19 for city drive and 25 for highway drive.

The Toyota Tacoma is an automatic vehicle, but if you’re looking for a manual fuel efficient small pick up truck, you may want to consider the Ford Ranger Pickup 2WD which has been voted one of the best over at FuelEconomy.Gov.

Top standard pick-up trucks include the Chevrolet Silverado 15 Hybrid 4WD which is pictured above, while the top fuel-efficient minivan and cargo van is the Honda Oddessy and the Chevrolet Express 1500 respectively.

You can view the full list of the most fuel-efficient pick up trucks in the link to FuelEconomy.Gov above. We’ve also included a video of the Chevrolet Silverado which you can check out below.

Do you own a pick-up truck? If so, let us know how fuel efficient it is on the road.

We recently gave you a list of some of the cars with the best mileage and also told you about some iOS apps which will help you to extend your precious gas mileage, but now we have a list of some of the worst 2011 cars that don’t impress when it comes to gas mileage.

If you are currently searching for a new car, and you want a new 2011 model, you’ll definitely need to know which cars are the best for saving money on gas, and which cars are the worst, since car dealers are very unlikely to admit to such shortcomings when they are trying to sell you their motor.

Luckily for you, that’s where we can help, and we have a strong list of contenders with regards to the ‘worst gas mileage cars for 2011′ title. First up is the 2011 Nissan Titan and according to Autoropolis, the EPA has classified it as the least efficient truck of 2011 so far. It’s priced at around $28,820 and customers buying one should expect to make frequent trips to the gas station to fill up.

Another contender is the 2011 Audi R8 Spyder, aimed at the more luxurious consumer with a price tag of around $112,152. If you compare this model with other sports cars on the market at the moment, the Audi R8 is probably the least fuel efficient choice you can buy. However, if you’re paying over $100,000 for a car, fuel costs are unlikely to be a major problem for you.

If you want to read on and hear which other car models make it onto the worst car mileage list, head over to Autotropolis here. Alternatively, we’ve found another article over at DMV which lists several other motors that you should avoid.

If you are currently driving a car which you think should be criticized for it’s gas mileage performance, leave us a comment below.

More About: cars, fuel, gas

We’re sure you have your own little methods on how to save a little bit of gas whilst driving, but how about reading some professional help online if you’re getting increasingly worried about the amount you’re having to pay on fuel each month.

At the start of the year, we gave you some of our own tips to help you get the most out of your gas mileage, but now we have found some other tips which may help you. The guide comes from eHow and they have listed eight simple steps for you to try out the next time you hit the road.

One common reason for fuel running out quicker than usual is air pressure inside your tyres. You should head to your nearest garage and check to see if the pressure is too low in your tyres. If so, simply add more air to maximise your gas mileage as much as possible. There are also more useful steps like this over at eHow – take a look and let us know if they work for you.

Failing that, we also thought we’d point you in the direction of a very useful iPhone app called GasBook, which searches for cheaper gas prices amongst thousands of stations across the U.S. The app is certainly held in high regard as it has also been featured on CNN, if you needed any further reassurances. It is available to download now for $0.99 US, visit the iTunes link here.

It isn’t the first time we’ve heard about gas prices increasing, but the recent events in countries that supply our oil and fuel are starting to worry leaders around the world. Is it time we really started to crack the whip on alternative fuels?

The technology is there for us to rely less on oil, it has been for a while although the investment has not been what it should, western countries may have felt that oil is not going anywhere soon, but thanks to recent events, the focus is back on other possibilities like a fuel cell for autos.

We heard last year about a fuel cell in 2015 by Toyota, which would be priced around $50,000. This was even after a 90 percent cut in the cost of building these cars, but with oil prices rising, this is looking better all the time. You can read more on Toyota’s plans in this older article here. Autos on Yahoo also took a look at the magic 2015 date for fuel cell vehicles, which explains a little about the plans by not only Toyota, but also Ford and Daimler. The wait will still be a long one, but are we really waiting for a miracle?

Today some news sites are asking what if gas cost $10 a gallon? The thought is a crazy one, but also could become reality very soon. How would this price for gas change your life?

The start of 2011 has shown that the wait may decrease with more investment, and in an article this week by finchannel.com, they look at the F-CELL World Drive that has been demonstrated to show us how the auto future could look like, which points to how important this fuel cell tech will be. Have a read and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Do you like the idea of a fuel cell car? How high do you think gas prices will go in 2011? You may want to read about how Hydrogen fuel for cars work and it’s problems in this post.
