You may remember Bloom Box’s energy server from back in February, which saw the fuel cell “In-a-Box”, hit the headlines. Back then we saw a video with their CEO KR Sridhar, and 60 minutes explained the new technology to the world.

Since then more companies have signed up to the revolutionary fuel cell technology, and last weekend 60 minutes decided to take another look at Bloom Energy. The latest video can be seen on CBS News here.

Many startups in Silicon Valley are trying to achieve inexpensive and clean energy with no emissions, and the Bloom Box could one day be a power plant in a box, which is stored at your home and wireless.

Bloom Energy hopes to revolutionize how you get power to your home, just like cell phones replaced landlines, and laptops are replacing desktops.

Now that California has large corporations testing the Bloom Box, they are generating power on the spot, which means no need to be connected to the electric grid. Not only is this clean, but it’s apparently saving money too.

You can see the official site at bloomenergy.com. Let us know what you think of Bloom Energy. Would you want one in your home?

CES is now far behind us and we are still only seeing products released 6 months after the show. Horizon was one brand that had three products of interest on show; these were the Minipak, Hydrofill, and the Hydrostik. Those who attended have been wondering when and where they will be able to buy these fuel-cell devices, we can now tell you where.

If you visit the company website all the details for you to pre-order are there as well as the prices. According to Darren Murph from Engadget, he was given the heads up from a reader that all three devices will be ready to ship some time next month.

The MiniPAK costs $99.99 and can produce 2W (5V, 400mA. There is a choice of different cables to choose from to help power up devices, such as USB. More details here

The HydroSTIK is the cheapest item of the three, and costs just $9.99. The product looks much like an AA battery. Details on this can be found here.

The final product is the HydroFILL, just hope you have some spare cash, as the device will cost you $499.99, and is a mall-scale home hydrogen station. More details here.

Let us know if you have pre-order any one of these

We all wondered where Toyota came up with its price for its hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicle, which will be released in 2015. $50,000 is a huge sum to pay but that’s what we have come to expect when new technology becomes available. We wonder how Hyundai-Kia feels about this, who are also working on their-own fuel cell car?

Hyundai-Kia is pleased to know that the public is not happy with such a high price tag, and believes that they will have a cheaper alternative – although we have no idea if it will be branded Hyundai or Kia? Tim Stevens from Engadget learned from Autocar the reason why the Toyota version is more expensive.

Byung Ki Ahn, General Manager of the Korean car maker said that their version does not require an onboard compressor, and that its catalysts have much less platinum than the Toyota – and we all know how costly platinum is.

There are two ways of looking at this cost cutting measure – yes it will be much cheaper for the customer, but has the carmaker sacrificed this for efficiency? The only way we will know for sure is when Hyundai-Kia has a working prototype in 20102.
