It may have been a very close race between the Ford Explorer and Chrysler’s Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee crossovers, but it was the Ford Explorer that finally got your votes as the 2011 Drive On Truck of the Year. In fact, the Explorer got 38% of the 3,600 votes.

However, according to a recent article by Chris Woodyard over at usatoday.com, the votes that Chrysler’s Dodge Durango (14%) and Jeep Grand Cherokee (25%) received tallied up to a total of 39%. Twenty-three percent of voters didn’t like any of the three crossover vehicles.

Those voters decided to vote for “other” trucks all together. For example, justanotherwb said: “My vote goes to my ’99 F-150 paid off nearly ten years ago and still running strong.” Meanwhile, am Radio claimed that the real Truck of the Year is Chevrolet’s Silverado Heavy Duty one-ton model.

Ford’s global sales and marketing chief Jim Farley attended the North American International Auto Show in Detroit recently, where he spoke out about the overall sales market in regards to Ford’s pick-up trucks, small cars and crossover vehicles such as the Ford Explorer.

According to a report by Bernie Woodall at reuters.com, Farley stated that the strength of pickup truck sales within the first quarter will be a key sign to the overall U.S. auto market in 2011. About 28% of the U.S. market is said to be in the small car section, while 33% of it is crossovers.

You can read a fairly recent review of the 2011 Ford Explorer over on the autoguide.com website, courtesy of Colum Wood. Colum notes that the Explorer is smooth on the highways, composed on the corners, feels smaller than the previous model and is even more enjoyable to drive.

For those of you who thought the Ford Explorer was made part of automobile history, you would have been shocked when the Detroit Auto company announced that they were to launch a 2011 model. The SUV was not coming back in a form that we are familiar with – you can clearly see with the images from Autoblog that much has changed.

Chris Paukert from the above mentioned auto website has had a chance to give the new 2011 Ford Explorer a go, and before he gets going with his first drive experience was like, he thought it was only fair to offer a brief history into how the model had been damaged through past events. So we know that the 2011 model will have to be something special to shake off the stigma.

The new vehicle will be available in three trim versions: base, XLT and Limited, which we discussed in a recent post. Prices are $28,995 to $39,995. Paukert pointed to the fact that the 2010 Taurus was able to become a success even after being tainted, so there is no reason why this will not be the case for the 2011 Ford Explorer as well.

Below we have found a video of the new Explorer, and how it performs on the sand. In the video it has been pointed out that the new 2011 Ford Explorer is no competition for the Range Rover – but is anything? One thing is certain, from watching the video you will have a lot of fun on the sand – even if you might lose control a few times.

It has recently been revealed that Ford Motor Co have been ordered to pay a family $131 million following a fault with their Ford Explorer, in 2001 this fault cost Brian Cole his life.

Ford believe that that the tiremaker Firestone are to blame, they no longer have a partnership together as Ford say that their tires were responsible for blowouts and accidents, some of which were fatal, however experts suggest that the Explorer’s exhaust is to blame as it is too close to one of the rear tires.

To be honest I am surprised that the judge reached this verdict, this is because it has been revealed that Cole was not wearing his safety belt and was travelling at 80 miles per hour, a Ford spokesperson had this to say on the matter “This was a tragic accident and our sympathy goes out to the Cole family for their loss, but it was unfair of them to blame Ford”.

The settlement was so high because Brian Cole was an upcoming baseball player for the New York Mets, many are surprised that the family got anything as another passenger who was wearing their safety belt walked away from the crash.

Do you think this is harsh on Ford?

Pictures of the exciting new 2012 Ford Explorer have been uncovered, and it would seem completely by accident. AutoBlog’s spy photographer happened to be in the right place at the right time when a stray gust of wind unveiled the new Explorer.

Although not alot of detail is seen, there is a glimpse of the three-bar-grille with thin chrome strips, the fastback shaped rear end and sharply raked C-pillars. The front shows uncompleted projector headlamps behind smoked covers but unfortunately the rear was not captured.

The pictures from the underside prove that his particular model is front-wheel drive but the chances are that an all-wheel-drive option will be available. Check out the link to see more pictures and give us your opinion?
