We have some important news for those of you who are familiar with the Trader Joe’s Pizza products, as it has been confirmed that there is a Trader Joe’s Pizza recall, which affects around 131,000 pounds of frozen pizzas due to the fact that they contain wheat, an allergen which isn’t listed on the packaging.

The exact Trader Joe’s Pizza product is called Trader Joe’s Pizza Al Pollo Asado and the pizza has produce dates of January 27 and March 27 2011, according to ChicagoTribune.

While the overall health risk is low, it’s potentially a much more serious problem for those of you who suffer from wheat allergy, as consuming these pizzas could have serious health consequences.

It’s important to note, that if you have recently bought this product, or have it lying in your freezer and you don’t suffer from wheat allergy, then you will have no problems eating it, since the wheat allergy risk is the only factor associated with this recall. However, the pizzas have now been removed from supermarket shelves until the product has been repackaged with the correct wheat warning.

What are your thoughts on this recall? Are you a fan of Trader Joe’s pizzas?

Whenever you go to your local store you are asked if you have your own bags or whether you have reusable bags. I have five bags like this that I keep in my car for when I go shopping, but I did not know that I should wash them due to fears of food becoming cross-contaminated.

This certainly makes sense, just something that I have never thought about. In a recent study conducted by University of Arizona and Loma Linda University, they learned that these reusable bags had huge amounts of bacteria in them. The worrying thing is, this is all common sense – just none of us have ever thought about it.

Jim Steinberg, from Whittier Daily News says that this is bad timing as huge debates have been going on to ban single-use plastic or paper bags for these environmentally friendly ones. There are fears that this could lead to high numbers of illnesses due to the spread of harmful bacteria.

If these bags are kept in the trunk and not cleaned within two hours, then bacteria can multiple 10-fold. I can hear the sound of car trunks being opened and slammed shut right now.

The FDA has some major problems when it comes to handling issues with food supply, which is why a recent report by a government panel suggests that a major food safety haul is needed. The main issue that needs to be addressed is how the U.S. Food and Drug Administration needs to not only identify but also address high-risk areas so that they can prevent illness from contaminated food.

In this recent government report it suggest that the FDA should be given the power to issue a recall of food products and then pass on responsibility to certain states for them to investigate. Currently they handle 60 percent of these duties.

The FDA normally handles all-but 20 percent of the tasks in the food supple chain in the U.S, but this job has been made very hard for them due to a high number of foodborne illness outbreaks. As a result a huge number of recalls were announced on a huge number of food products.

Congress will now have to revamp things in order to give the FDA the power that it needs if they have any chance of combating this issue. For more details on this read Amanda Gardner’s article on Business Week

People are constantly looking for ways to live a healthier lifestyle, with food always a big part of any changes made. A healthy heart is very important in maintaining that lifestyle, and what we eat has a big factor how our heart functions. Certain types of food can lower your cholesterol and protect the heart.

A story by the Mayo Clinic staff is listing five different food types to help achieve this. Eating fish that is rich in omega-3 fatty acids is a great way to protect the heart. The omega -3 can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of blood clots. Fish that contain good levels of omega-3 include salmon, mackerel, halibut, and sardines.

Oatmeal is another good food because it contains soluble fiber that reduces the low-density lipoprotein; this is known as “bad” cholesterol. This type of fiber is found in apples, pears, kidney beans, barley and prunes.

Nuts that have high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids are good for keeping blood vessels healthy. These can be almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, pistachio nuts, some pine nuts, and walnuts. Eating only a few handfuls a day is recommend as they are high in calories.

Use the link above to get the full list of foods.

When I was a child I used to have candy cigarettes, people now argue that giving them to children could lead to them smoking when older – well I do not smoke and never intend too. But parents should worry about giving their children smokeless tobacco mints, as there is now research that it could be poisoning them.

Do not get me wrong, I am not saying that parents give them to their children, but they need to make certain that they never try these products. They look like cell phones, which is why children love to try them, but as they are laced with nicotine, they are a danger to young children.

According to Oral Cancer News almost 600 kids a year accidentally consume smokeless tobacco products, and there are fears that this number will grow as more dissolvable tobacco products are released. It does seem strange how these companies are able to get around tough-new anti-smoking laws.

These companies should be forced to not make their tobacco products look like candy, or even cell phones – it is for this reason why they are drawing the attention of young children.

There is no denying the success of Hello Kitty and the range of merchandise proves just that. There are so many products available, but we have yet to see a bottle of wine with an image of the cute little cat on the label – until now. We have to wonder though – is in an innovation or simply and April Fools?

Sorry about that pun above, it is just that the Hello Kitty Wine will be will be marketed by Innovation Spirits for the U.S. market. There are four varieties to choose from, all of which will be bottled in Italy. Three of the bottles are 750 ml; the other is just 375 ml.

The four Hello Kitty Wines are as follows: The 2006 Hello Kitty Devil Red Pinot Nero, The Hello Kitty Angel White Pinot Nero label, Hello Kitty Sparkling Brut Rosé, and finally the Hello Kitty Sparkling “Sweet Pink”.

There are concerns that Wines with a children’s theme is in bad taste, as kids could see the drink and think that it is a soft drink or a fruit juice. Prices range from $19.99 to $29.99.

Who would ever have thought that food would be used to combat terrorism? Coming up with a secret weapon for the Indian army was a tiring process, but experts believe they have found the answer, the bhut jolokia, which is the world’s hottest chilli pepper.

The army believes that the seeds from the chilli pepper can be harnessed and then used in grenades. They will use it in situations such as rioting or to flush out terrorists in small places. The bhut jolokia is said to be a 100 hundred times hotter than the jalapeño pepper.

The Indian army also said that the new weapon could be placed into aerosol sprays – making it ideal for woman to carry with them. It is said that the chilli is powerful enough to stop an elephant charging at you.

We reported a few days back that the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites) was looking for a ban on Bluefin Tuna fishing. Both Japan and Canada were fighting the proposal backed by the U.S. and the UK – Sushi lovers will be pleased to know that the proposed ban has failed.

The proposed ban was not a popular one; it was defeated 68 votes to 20, showing that Canada, France and a list of many poor nations do have power when it is needed. They all stated that such a measure would have put an end to their fishing industry.

According to Japan Probe, for a total Bluefin Tuna ban there would have to be a vote of more than two-thirds in support. Japan would have been one of the county’s hardest hit if the ban had gone ahead – relying on Bluefin Tuna for their profitable Sushi industry.

Are you happy that the ban did not go ahead?

Yesterday saw the conclusion of the 010 World Championship Cheese Contest and we are happy to inform you that a Madison cheese producer was picked as the winner. The New York Times has a list of the three top finishers along with all the details of the winning cheese producer in 79 categories.

Cheese makers from Switzerland and Austria were among those taking the top honors, this was a huge achievement as they fought off 2,300 entries from 20 countries around the world. The top cheese was a Gruyere, as it was found to have a creamy texture and lightly flavored with herbs.

Most of the judges agreed that the cheese had a clean flavor that bursts in your mouth. Not sure how anyone can get so exited about cheese, but who are we to judge.

The contest started back in 1957, by 1980 there were just 212 entries, today there are 2,318, and that number is climbing each year.

More details and the full list of winners can be found on AP

France and China are both opposed to a proposed worldwide ban on Bluefin Tuna – France have said that they will wait for the outcome of a scientific report, which is not due until May 2011. The ban is being backed by the European Union and the United States.

The 175-nation UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species is in ongoing talks with the two countries looking for this worldwide ban, as they are worried that overfishing is doing irreversible damage to Bluefin Tuna stocks.

Japanese and French ministers are to meet today about the ban; Japan currently buys three-quarters of the worlds Bluefin Tuna. As you would expect, Japan is campaigning to stop catches in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean from falling under CITES’ Appendix I – this is an outlaw of all commerce.

It is common knowledge that Bluefin Tuna is being overfished, a number of environmental groups are warning that these fish are facing a disappearance. This fish is one of the most popular dishes for sushi and sashimi.
