Now that we are almost at the end of the month, it is now time for our 2011 May product recalls roundup, which seems to highlight more than ever consumer concern. As always there are children’s products, cars and also consumer electronics in the mix. So let us see what we have covered first, and then look at a few more products that had to be recalled.

Back on May 3, 2011 Toyota issued an expansion of their ongoing recall due to faulty airbags. The Japanese automaker was said to now increase this recall to a further 833,000 vehicles, more details can be found on our recent post. Next up was the 2011 GM Chevy Cruze recall due to poorly assembled steering shafts; our article reported that this affected 150,000 vehicles.

Next up we have the BlackBerry PlayBook, which affected 1,000 units that were shipped to Staples. The reason for the recall was due to a defective build of the operating system. Here we gave you details of the serial numbers of those models in the recall.

You can never go a whole month without children’s products being recalled, and one of the most recent is the Dream on Me Cribs. The reason was because children were said to be getting trapped between the mattress and the railings. For more on this you can get all the details at Wallet Pop.

Finally we have yet another Maclaren stroller recall, a few days ago the manufacturer announced a reminder of the recall due to children becoming injured by amputation along with laceration of children’s fingertips. The Guardian has all the details.

These are just a handful of the recalls that have affected consumers in May, but which has affected you the most?

We are now into our fifth month of 2011, and the number of food recalls has not been as high as expected. However, yesterday the USDA announced a grape tomatoes recall due to salmonella contamination. The recall affects 10 U.S. states and certain parts of their cousins Canada.

The list of affected products is extensive, so you will be better visiting the FDA website for a full list of those affected by the recall by brand, product description, size, package, use by, UPC and state. There are seven main brands in all, but the tomato found to have been contaminated with salmonella was is New York for use in a deli.

Thankfully there have been no reports of consumers falling ill, but those of you who have purchased any of these products in either a clamshell or 20 lbs are asked to return it to the store you purchased it from immediately for a full refund. Under no circumstances should you consume any.

Only last month there was another salmonella scare, that time it was for the Del Monte Cantaloupe, and again back in November of last year, which was for eggs. If you fear that you have eaten a contaminated tomato, then please call Taylor Farms Pacific at 209-835-6300.

Each week seems to see a new food recall; now there is a walnut products recall in place due to an outbreak of E. coli illness. You can see a list of brands and products that contain the E. coli bacteria, if you believe that you have any of the infected items, then please stop eating them immediately.

This outbreak has seen 13 people coming forward with their illness due to an E. coli fears. Nine of these were sent to hospital for treatment, while two developed a more serious case of the illness called haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). It comes as no surprise that this issue is being taken seriously, so you really need to study the chart that we have for you below, which was thanks to CBC News.

If HUS is left untreated, then it could result in kidney failure, something that you do not expect to get just by eating walnuts. Thankfully all cases were treated in time, and now all are expected to make a full recovery – but it is hard to understand what would have happened if they were not seen by medical staff.

We can see three brands in all, these are as follows: Amira, Merit Selection and Tia. The recall is not only for raw Shelled Walnuts, but also Mistral Mix and Salad booster. If you have eaten any of these products and are now suffering from abdominal pain as well as bloody diarrhea, then we advise you to visit your doctor or head to hospital.

Other recent food recalls include Del Monte Cantaloupe, Lean Cuisine and Skippy Peanut Butter.

There have been some worrying recalls of late, earlier today we told you about Volkswagen recalling some of their vehicles due to faulty wiring, and a few days ago we heard about almost five million fans being recalled. Today we can warn you about some candy which has been found to contain high levels of lead.

An article by Nancy Zielinski from Examiner.com is reporting that the recall concerns Toxic Waste Short Circuits Bubble Gum. Tests carried out by the US Food and Drug Administration found the product contained a lead level of 0.189 parts per million, the recommended level is 0.1 per million.

Too much lead can be a health risk especially for young children or pregnant women. The affected candy has the lot number #15070SC12, which can be found along the left of the bag, and the UPC is 0 89894 31001 3. It was distributed between January 4 and March 18 2011.

The candy was sold through mail order and stores nationwide, with some also being sold in Canada. Consumers who have some of the product should contact 317-228-5012 for more information. No illnesses have been reported so far.

July 2010 was not a great month for food recalls, looking back we can see more than what we normally would – the biggest had to be the Kellogg’s Voluntary Cereal Recall. We have covered so many over the month; here we will offer a roundup of what was the worst.

The Kellogg’s recall was due to strange smells that came from the boxes themselves. The odor was that bad that in some cases customers were said to be throwing up. For more details on this Kellogg’s has a FAQ page for worried consumers.

Next up with had the chicken nugget recall after some plastic pieces were found inside the bags. The recall only concerned the 1 lb., 13 oz. bag, but only those with a use by date of June 9, 2011. Read Alan Ng’s post for more details.

The bison meat recall in the early part of July to me looked to be the most worrying, as there had been an outbreak of E.Coli sickness. The U.S. recall involved a range of brands, read the full list here.

These are just a handful of the food recalls for the month of July 2010; let us hope that August is not as bad.
