We are only approaching the fourth month of 2011, and there has already been a worrying amount of food recalls. The latest is the Del Monte Cantaloupe recall, which is due to a form of salmonella contamination. It has been reported that more than 5,000 cartons are to be recalled.

The cantaloupe recall only affects those that were distributed through Alaska, Montana, Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Idaho and California. The recall comes after reports of 12 cases of salmonella panama, although often fatal there have been no reports of serious infections.

MSNBC reports that this illness can often affect the elderly and young children more, as well as those with a low/weak immune system. The FDA is now working with these distribution centers to learn where in the supple chain these food products could have been contaminated.

For those of you who fear that you might have an affected Del Monte Cantaloupe, then you are asked to take it to where you purchased it, as long as it is uneaten. For more details on this please call 1-800-659-6500. Are you woried about the high number of recalls that keeps being reported?

There was huge concern today when a turkey recall was announced, as U.S. citizens feared that it could affect their Thanksgiving dinner plans. Thankfully only ready-to-eat smoked turkey breast products are affected by this latest food recall, but this is still a huge issue.

It seems that these turkey products have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, this germ is very serious, as there is a chance that someone could fall ill with the fatal illness listeriosis. The recall emanates from the New Braunfels Smokehouse, a meat processor plant based in Texas.

According to Huliq, 2,600 pounds of this meat is to be recalled, some of the products include: New Branufels Smokehouse Sliced Smoked Turkey, the 1Ib packets and whole breast packages of Stegall Boneless Hickory Smoked Turkey Breast, the 4 to 4Ib bags, visit Huliq for the full recall list.

Each turkey product was produced on August 4, 2010, so make certain that you call the company’s customer care line on 1-800-537-6932. Food recalls seems to be getting as regular as car recalls these days, you only have to look at the recent egg and cheese recalls to know just what we are talking about.

Back in August we reported of an egg recall due to an outbreak of Salmonella, so we were shocked of yet another case. The latest egg recall affects Cal-Maine Foods, Inc., who get their supply from an Ohio farm. Thankfully there have not been any reports of illness.

The FDA found salmonella during a routine inspection, and the worrying thing is, the farm has ties with the two men behind a previous egg recall. 24,000 eggs in all will be recalls, which were packaged from October 9 to October 12.

These eggs are shipped under different names these are as follows: Sun Valley, Sunny Meadow, James Farm labels and Springfield Grocer. The Julian dates for these are 282, 284 and 285. For more details visit the Iowa Independent.

Another scare like this will not give the consumer confidence in the food that they purchase. Recalls have been getting more often, which is certainly a worry, why has the rate of recalls increased over the past couple of years?

When it comes to recalls, the most worrying are on cars and food. The reason for this is obvious, as they present the most risk to us when there is an issue. The latest food recall to worry consumers is the ‘Costco Cheese Recall’ Consumers have been advised not to eat this food item.

The cheese affected by this recall is ‘Bravo Farms Dutch Style Raw Milk Gouda Cheese’ purchased from October 1 to November 1 2010. For those customers who purchased any, they should take the cheese back to any Costco store to receive a full refund.

The reason for the recall is due to a risk of E. coli O157:H7, which as we know is not nice to have. Some symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and blood in your stools. Most people will be able to get over this illness, but young children and the elderly can become seriously ill.

The FDA is now working with Costco in labs to understand why this problem has occurred. For more details on this visit the Costco website.

It is not often that we see pet food recalls, but when we do we worry about our pets. The reason is because cats and dogs are unable to let us know if there is something wrong, so I am certain that the recent Blue Buffalo Company recall will have owners worried.

Looking at the list of recalls from the company we can see that there are 6 different products affected, three flavors of Blue Wilderness dry dog food, as well as Blue Basics Limited Ingredient Formula and Blue Life Protection Formula. More details on the different sizes can be found by visiting the FDA website.

The reason for this latest 2010 pet food recall is due to a high level of Vitamin D, which is much higher than guidelines recommend. There are a few symptoms to look out for, these include: depression, diarrhea, heart arrhythmias, increased urination, limping, pain in the joints, poor appetite and vomiting.

If you pet is showing any sings of these symptoms or has eaten the pet food then you should contact your veterinarian.

Since the Similac recall that was announced earlier this week due to contamination fears from the common beetle, parents have been understandably worried for their health of their child. It is all well and good issuing a recall, but what about those who have already given the baby formula to their child, and what alternatives do they have?

We recently learned of a mother who said that her child had started to get a tummy upset due to the Similac baby formula, but Abbott has announced on a number of occasions that there has been no reports of illness due to the recall.

As for what parents can do if their child has already taken the formula, Dr. Jane Chikkala has said “they’ll likely be okay,” which is according to a report on WTOL.

Parents will need to find an alternative to the Similac baby formula, just remember that you will need to make certain that it is from the same group, if your child has been on a soy formula, then make certain that you swap to a soy formula from another brand.

Abbott said that they are very understanding on this issue, and although they were very slow in the information on this recall – they now have a huge amount of advice for not only parents but caregivers as well.

The first thing that they can do is visit the recall lookup page to check their lot numbers, which we recently reported. Also Abbott has a consumer hotline running 24/7, (888) 376-2054.

Last week was a huge deal for thousands of parents who feared for the health of their child. The reason behind this was due to the recent Similac baby formula recall from Abbott, which is seen as one of the most concerning recalls of 2010.

Stacey Bradford from CBS MoneyWatch has been following this story closely and has a valid point when she says that we do not always get a guarantee of quality when paying for a pricey brand – do you think that she has a point?

A huge percentage of parents always want to give their child the best, and having a big named brand like Abbott is one of them. However, we have to ask ourselves what are we really paying for?

Bradford explains that all formula sold is required to meet a certain standard, this applies to named and generic brands – so what are we really paying for Stacey asks?

The answer she thinks is simple, marketing and advertising. Do you think that it is time to start looking at generic brands instead of the over priced named ones?

For those worried if their Similac formula is affected by this recall, then Alan Ng has more information for you on the lot numbers.

A few days ago it was reported that Abbott was to recall certain Similac products from its baby formula range, which to many parents is seen as one of the most concerning recalls of 2010. Since then there have been reports of baby illnesses, and although parents believe it to be a side effect from the contaminated product, we cannot confirm that this is true.

Some parents are also annoyed at the lack of information that is available. However, we decided to take a look at the Similac website, and it seems as though they have now started to offer more information on this worrying recall.

According to one article on KCCI Des Monies, one parent noticed that her five-month old child was having issues his tummy.

We are not certain how much truth there is to this report, as Abbott has said in the past that they have not had any reports of illnesses due to their Similac formula.

For those of you who are worried if your baby formula is affected by the recall, Alan Ng has given information on how you can download the lot numbers. When the recall was first announced the Similac Lot Numbers page faced huge demand and crashed, but things are now up and running.

Do you have any reports of illnesses due to this baby formula?

Yesterday Justin reported that Abbott Laboratories issued a recall on their Similac baby formula due to the possibility that the common beetle could be found in the product. As you would imagine the Similac website for looking at the lot numbers came under huge demand, so much that Alan Ng reported that the site stopped working for a while.

However, we can now tell you that the site is now working, as they have now fixed the issues causing the downtime. Alan also gave us details on the list of affected formulas, which was certain to be worrying parents.

If for any reason the website goes down yet again, then you can get all the lot numbers by visiting news.spreadit.org. It is reported that 5 million cans of the formula is begin recalled, and looking at all those lot number – we can see why.

Currently all production of the Similac formula has come to a stop. Again, you can type in your lot number here to see if your product is affected by this latest recall. Has this put you off purchasing all Similac formulas?

We recently reported that Abbot had to issue a recall of its Similac infant formula due to possible contamination from the common beetle. The recall affects products sold in Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. along with a select few Caribbean countries.

Abbott has set up a new web page – www.similac.com/recall – where you can check your lot number to see if your formula has been contaminated. The FDA reports that there is no health risk, although children who have ingested the affected formula could experience some discomfort.

Before you start to worry that all Similac formulas are affected by this recall, it is only those in plastic containers, those that are in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans.

If your product is affected, then it should be returned to Abbott – thankfully this will not cost you a dime. It is understandable that parents will be worried right now, which is why you should call (800) 986-8850 for more details.
