Today we can inform you that the Karma plug-in car has started production with a price of $88,000, and Fisker plan to get the first vehicles to Europe and the United States in April.

California-based Fisker, who are under contract for Irvine, are making this vehicle that runs mainly on electricity up to about 50 miles before a fuel engine starts. They’ve began assembly on Tuesday at Valmet Automotive’s Finland plant in Uusikaupunki, said Roger Ormisher, a spokesman for Fisker.

The demand for vehicles that use hardly any gasoline has meant that Fisker are going to “mass produce plug-ins”, as its their view that this area is going to explode over the coming years. With problems around the world in countries that hold most of the world’s oil, its reassuring to know we’re looking at cleaner ways to fuel our cars.

Well, the first drive reviews have now come in and the bottom line is quite positive. One would have thought that the $95,900-$108,900 price tag would have been an issue, but we guess that such technology comes at a price.

Autoblog had the chance to try out how the 2012 Fisker Karma at the California Speedway, which we presume is in anticipation of the Frankfurt Motor Show. We do worry that this is not the best show to unveil their finished design off.

As with all EVs it is a strange experience when you sit in the car and press the ignition button, as there is no thumping sound from a powerful gas-burning engine, instead all the instruments come to life and await you to press the accelerator pedal. It is then that you are propelled from 0-60mph in 7.9 seconds – not bad for a car that is powered by the same stuff as your toaster.

However, you can select sport mode, which will do the 0-60mph sprint in just 5.9 seconds. However, doing so will reduce your range. There will be those who will start to compare this to the Tesla Roadster, and for good reason. However, the two are for different markets, but the Model S is certainly a true rival.

Auto Express has also had some time behind the wheel of the 2012 Fisker Karma, and believes that its nearest rival is the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid. The question will be if the small time outfit will be able to take the fight to the big German automaker?

According to PlugInCars production will being in March and deliveries will be expected soon after, therefore it would be fair to say that people may begin receiving their vehicles in late Spring 2011, delays aren’t expected, however don’t be too surprised if this slips to early Summer 2011.

Fisker Automotive hope to build and sell roughly 15,000 Karmas in 2011, if they manage this figure it will bring in a huge amount of money, remember there are three different models available ranging from $95,900 to $108,900, you can see full pricing details on the pre-order form.

Some people were annoyed that Fisker increased the Karma’s price from $87,900 to $95,900, however once you take into account federal tax incentives the difference is only a few hundred dollars, we have embedded an image below which gives you a rough idea about the car’s performance.
