We told you last month that a new PC version of PlayStation classic Final Fantasy 7 was on the way, and now Square-Enix has officially confirmed the game. A website is now live teasing the game in action with a preview trailer and a promise that the game will be available to download ‘soon’.

If you have already played the game though, there may not be much to get excited about. On first glance, it doesn’t appear to be any sort of remake or HD remaster. In the trailer shown, Square-Enix has sneakily avoided using any actual gameplay from the 1997 classic.

Instead all we see is some of the iconic cutscenes that are featured in the game, you know, scenes which actually show Cloud and Aeris with mouths. As previously leaked, the game will however bring some new features to the game, such as cloud saves, achievements and something known as the character booster.

We’re not sure why some players will want this, but you’ll be able to use the character booster to max out your HP, MP and gil with the press of a button. Surely that removes all of the challenge away from the game? There’s no indication from Square on whether this will be a free feature to the PC version, or if it is going to be a paid extra.

On the website, we have noticed something of interest though – a series of screenshots. These screenshots show HD scenes from the game, but you may spot that some of the images used are not even featured in the game as a cutscene. For example, we see Barret and his daughter in the flower church – we don’t remember that being in the game? We also see a lovely picture of Cid sitting on top of the Tiny Bronco overlooking Rocket Town, but that screenshot implies that the game has been given a HD upscale?

Are Square-Enix just misleading us to think that the game has been improved graphically, when actually the game has been completely untouched from the original? – Hence the reason why we didn’t see any actual gameplay in the teaser trailer. It almost reminds us when Square-Enix tried to pass off screenshots of Final Fantasy XIII on the Xbox 360, when actually SE got caught out photoshopping the images by just sticking Xbox 360 buttons on the PS3 images.

The company has promised to give out some more details on the game within 24 hours, so hopefully they will clear up the matter on if the game has been given a graphical boost or not.

Check out the trailer below and screenshots on the official website and let us know your thoughts on them. Do you agree that the screenshots are a bit misleading if the game hasn’t been remastered?

We have some interesting new information on the status of the infamous and never-ending Final Fantasy 7 remake to share with you now. Fresh doubts have been cast on the possibility of a remake arriving in the near future, after Square-Enix CEO president Yoichi Wada recently stated that having a remake would basically kill off their franchise for good.

An explanation is obviously required for such a bold statement and luckily the main man at Square-Enix provided it. When speaking to shareholders, he has apparently said that in order for the team to make a Final Fantasy 7 remake, Square-Enix has to first develop a game which surpasses that of the PS1 classic.

Although not specifically naming titles, he also said that right now – the team has so far not lived up to this requirement, basically confirming that in his mind the likes of Final Fantasy XIII, XIII-2 and FFXIV are not good enough to polish FF7′s boots.

While it is obviously disappointing that a remake remains a distant dream, you can perfectly understand Wada’s logical and reasoning behind saying such a thing. At the moment, all fans want is a remake of older games – with Final Fantasy X HD a classic example. If they remade Final Fantasy VII now, what would Square-Enix do after that? The following game after a FF7 remake would almost certainly not live up to the same expectations, so you can definitely understand that they want to bring out a FF7 limit breaker first before launching their ultimate weapon.

It looked at one point that Final Fantasy Versus XIII could well be the game that has the right to be discussed in the same breath as Final Fantasy 7, but Square-Enix are still playing silly games on the status of this title, instead choosing to remain silent on its current whereabouts.

Final Fantasy 14 isn’t exactly top of the RPG wish list either for many fans, although we would say that the company’s Luminous Engine tech demo at E3 was very impressive indeed. Considering how long they took to release Final Fantasy XIII, we don’t even want to think at the time the company may need to bring out a game that tops FF7.

Should we all call it a day and presume that a remake is never coming? Failing that, Square-Enix could probably survive on just remaking Final Fantasy 1-12. Let us know your thoughts on these latest developments.

If there was one big disappointment for the PS Vita from what we can see, it’s the fact that there is still no big name RPG titles out for the system. Final Fantasy X HD is still light years away from releasing it seems, while there still isn’t any official word on whether Monster Hunter is coming to the system or not.

While there is already a nice variety of genres available on the Vita, RPG titles on Sony handhelds fit perfectly – just look at Crisis Core and Monster Hunter on the PSP for example. Square-Enix are obviously very busy at the moment sorting their own affairs with regards to Final Fantasy XIV, Versus XIII and so on, but imagine our surprise when we heard that they may be plotting to re-release one of the best RPGs of all time – on Steam.

We’re talking about Final Fantasy 7 of course and leaked information has revealed that not only is the game coming to PC, but with brand new features as well not included on the PS1 original or any of the various platforms that the game is available on. You can visit a Google Cache page here to see the whole thing blown wide open – Final Fantasy 7 on Steam will include extras such as achievements, ‘character boosters’ and even cloud saves.

That’s great news of course for PC owners, but what about PS Vita owners? There are probably many Vita owners who bought the PS1 original who are thinking they should deserve this new version of FF7 as a priority over PC. It is not the FF7 remake that the whole world craves for, but this new addition with brand new functionality certainly seems like it’s worth re-purchasing.

How much time and effort has Square-Enix put into this game, knowing too well that they won’t be making it available on PS Vita? The website also reveals a £7.99 / €9.99 price for the game which isn’t too bad considering the new features. It is very likely that the original FF7 game will arrive on the PS Vita in the form of a PS1 classic, but would you want this version instead?

Let’s hope that Square-Enix answers these questions soon, or possibly at Tokyo Game Show where we’re praying that they have some footage of FFXHD to show off.

If you were specifically hoping to see some remote play action on the PS Vita at Sony’s E3 keynote speech, you are probably feeling a little disappointed. The company announced some new PS1 classics such as Final Fantasy 7, but we didn’t see any indication on when the company plans to have their promised PS3 remote play streaming feature working.

The good news is that the first batch of new PS1 classics will be available for purchase on the PS Vita sometime this month. Two games that have already confirmed to be coming are Final Fantasy 7 and Tomb Raider. At the moment though, there still appears to be a lot of question marks regarding PS1 classics for existing games that Vita owners have purchased and of course when the company will finally roll out their long awaited remote play feature.

At the moment though, Sony didn’t say whether PS1 games that have already been bought on the store will work with the Vita. After teasing Killzone 3 on remote play at the Tokyo Game Show last year, there is still no sign of these features either. It would have been nice to be able to pick up a brand new PS3 game and be able to play it on the Vita via streaming.

We would hate to think that Sony are holding this feature back, purely and simply because they feel that they’ll lose money on Vita software in the long run. For example, if Sony were to provide remote play Vita streaming for Assassin’s Creed 3 on PS3, then who would still be willing to pick up Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation that has just been announced? Although Vita owners expect to see this functionality in the future, perhaps Sony has had a major u-turn and decided that free PS3 streaming isn’t a good business move.

If they do feel this way, then perhaps they should make it a PlayStation Plus feature only, that way they would get more subscribers to balance out potential Vita software losses. Obviously Sony may not be thinking about this idea, but it is worth contemplating this as a reality if you are wondering why Sony didn’t show any notable remote play features at their E3 keynote.

Did they just throw Final Fantasy 7 and Tomb Raider out there to keep Vita users sweet? Everybody wants to know what the score is regarding their remote play features that everyone bought the system for – at the moment, Sony are keeping us waiting. Let us know your thoughts on this one.
