The excitement of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa has not been as high as I would have thought, this could be a mixture of a number of things – your team getting off to a poor start or the constant noise from those Vuvuzelas. Anyway, that’s enough of the negative, the tournament is now a week old so now it is time to look at those standings – the fastest and easiest way to do this would be with an iPhone app.

We have covered a number of iPhone applications, but we seem to have missed out AP’s 2010 World Cup Coverage app. Once downloaded and installed to your Apple smartphone you will be able to keep track of your team’s standings throughout the game.

Other features include: live game scores, information on venues, latest photos and videos from each game and player profiles. Although it is the standings feature that will appeal to football / soccer fans the most.

Upgrade to version 1.1 to take advantage of improved new browsing, bug fixes and increased performance. You will be pleased to know that the AP 2010 World Cup Coverage app is free, more detail can be found on iTunes.

Have you been following the World Cup with friends on Twitter? We have something pretty amazing to show you now, which displays how Twitter reacts during live matches.

As reported from CrunchGear, the Guardian has created a Twitter ‘mash-up’ flash feed which neatly displays messages from Twitter during matches at the World Cup in South Africa.

The feed analyses all the various tweets around the world at that time, and mashes them together to create a dynamic effect.

Take last night’s game between Germany and Australia for example. You can see that Twitter goes a bit crazy every time a goal is scored, or when the red card occured towards the end of the match. We take our hats off to the Guardian for creating this.

Take a look yourself at the page here and let us know your thoughts on it.

If you thought ITV’s blunder during the FA Cup tie between Liverpool and Everton was pretty bad, wait until you hear this. The UK broadcaster cut to an advert during the opening few minutes of England’s game with USA at the World Cup, meaning that millions missed the first goal by Steven Gerrard.

As reported from Telegraph, the incident only happened on ITV’s HD channel, meaning that viewers watching the normal SD channel were unaffected. ITV has blamed the error on a technical glitch, the same apparent glitch which caused the problem during the FA Cup game.

It is thought that the broadcaster rely on automated times for their adverts, and an overrun during the build-up to the game caused the advert to come on during the match itself.

Obviously, it is a major error for the company – and a mistake which fans will never forget. Who knows what the repercussions will be for ITV.

Did you miss the goal on TV? Let us know your thoughts on this.

Are you ready for tonight’s massive game between England and USA at the 2010 FIFA World Cup? We hope you are not planning to use Twitter during the event, as we are hearing reports that the website could suffer an outage.

As reported from the AFP, Twitter has warned that the website could go down as a result of heavy traffic – mainly caused by the tournament in South Africa.

There is no doubt that tonight’s game between USA and England will be watched by millions, with tons of users wanting to share their opinions on the game with others.

Jean-Paul Cozzatti, a Twitter engineer had this to say on the possible outages during the match: “You may still see the whale when there are unprecedented spikes in traffic.”

Just so you know, he is talking about the whale which rarely appears on the website whenever the site does go down.

Are you planning to use Twitter during the match? Let us know your thoughts on this.

Are you planning to watch tonight’s game between England and USA via ITV online? You might want to find an alternative stream, since we are hearing numerous reports that ITV are having problems with their live streaming services.

An article we have found here over at the Guardian, confirms that users are being locked out of ITV’s ‘watch and chat’ service when trying to access their World Cup page on ITV.com.

Furthermore, users who downloaded ITV’s iPhone app, hoping to watch a live stream of the match on the go, might run into problems, after the first game between South Africa and Mexico suffered from buffering issues.

It is a headache for ITV and hardly perfect preparation for fans who have been waiting for the first England game for months. If you are unable to watch tonight’s game live on TV, you may want to start searching for an alternative stream.

Head to the Guardian for more details on this. You can find details on ITV’s iPhone app at the Apple store here. If you have any feedback for us, leave us a comment.

We’re sure millions of you tuned in to see the opening game between South Africa and Mexico at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, but did you watch it in 3D?

The debut game was the first time ESPN’s new 3D network was brought into action, so for those of you who forked out the costs to watch it – what did you think of it?

We have found an interesting article for you to read now, in which Sean Gregory, a journalist over at TIME managed to sample ESPN’s new 3D technology, and he has given us his thoughts on the first game in 3D.

He thinks that while, particular moments were nice using the 3D glasses, he thinks ESPN didn’t take advantage of the technology on offer. Furthermore, he thinks that the majority of content was the same as you’d see in SD or HD – so paying for the extra costs for 3D, just isn’t worth it at the moment it seems.

Maybe you think differently? Have a read of his article in the link above, then let us know your thoughts on this. Have you tuned into a match in 3D other than ESPN’s?

For football fans across the globe, the moment has finally arrived for you. In a few hours time, South Africa and Mexico will kick off the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Johannesburg. Excited?

It seems Google are certainly excited, as they have updated their search page with a World Cup-themed doodle. However if you click that doodle, you’ll be directed to their World Cup interface, which gives you a quick heads-up on the day’s fixtures and match start times.

You can read more about Google’s World Cup schedule in our earlier report here. Under the World Cup groups, you’ll find three useful links for further information. These will redirect you to FIFA’s website, allowing you to either check the latest news from the tournament, or view a full schedule from FIFA.

Earlier on, we reported how Google has added a simple World Cup interface for specific search results, now Microsoft has also followed them by adding their own unique information for the tournament.

If you type the words ‘world cup teams’ into Bing, you’ll see a message prompting you to install Microsoft Silverlight. This only takes a few moments and once you have done it – you’ll see a slick interface in front of you.

This is Bing’s World Cup database if you like, as you’ll be able to see pretty much everything you need to know from your chosen team at the World Cup, which kicks-off tomorrow. All sorts of statistics are available to view, while clicking the team name will bring up the World Cup squad and individual stats for each player – very impressive.

If you didn’t know about Bing’s Visual Search results for the World Cup, you should definitely check it out and bookmark the page.

What are your thoughts on Bing’s World Cup page? I think you’ll like what you see.

For those of you searching for the best schedule for this year’s World Cup in South Africa, have you noticed Google’s search results? We have spotted that the company has added a very useful mini schedule to their search results by typing in the words ‘world cup schedule’.

Once you do that, you’ll see that Google lists the next upcoming fixtures for the World Cup, as well as their start times – which is the local time in South Africa if you didn’t know. Since the tournament is yet to start, Google has listed tomorrow’s opening games between South Africa and Mexico, along with Uruguay Vs France later in the evening.

Below the fixtures, you’ll find each team and their corresponding group. It is not much by Google, but certainly very helpful. Especially good for those of you travelling home from work and want a quick update on start times for the matches.

Check it out for yourself and let us know what you think of it. Do you find this useful or not?

Are you looking for the best way to tune into the FIFA 2010 World Cup on your mobile? Don’t worry as we have a list of some of the best apps available on the iPhone – ensuring you don’t miss a minute of the action in South Africa.

As reported from NYDailyNews, you’ll be able to view full match schedules, live scores as they happen, the various venues in South Africa and more using some of the apps they have listed.

Top of the list is ESPN 2010 World Cup. This is a free app which will allow you to select your favorite team from the homescreen list of choices. You will then be kept up to date on all the latest info related to that team, including a live news ticker at the bottom of the screen.

Other apps include 2010 World Cup South Africa by Infindo, which costs $1.99 to download from the app store. This contains a lot more content than ESPN’s and will keep you updated with goal alerts along with quotes from some of the world’s top players.

Head to the link above for more FIFA 2010 World Cup apps on the iPhone. Do you have a World Cup app that you feel we should know about? Leave us a comment!
