Did any of you receive downtime when trying to access Facebook on Thursday? I for one did, but there was hardly no mention of it after it was put back up. Now we have the reason, and it was due to an accidental leak of new Facebook features that were not intended to be rolled out.

During the time it was up, PC World, Mashable and The Next Web managed to capture some screenshots of the new features that “accidently” went live, and we got a glimse in to what we could possible expect in the future.

Memories, a lightbox UI when viewing photos, a switch accounts option, a Yahoo Answers-like page (but Facebook instead of Yahoo!), the disappearance of the submit button, redesigned “pages” and an Outside World link all made the grade before they were immediately taken down again, along with the entire site.

You can see the screenshots by visiting PC World, Mashable and The Next Web, but we have also added a few here so you can see what we are talking about.

We reported to you yesterday about Facebook being down, and again when it finally came back on. Today we can report that Facebook has apologized for the worst outage the site has seen in over four years.

Dan Nystedt of Computerworld is reporting that the outage was down to a change Facebook made to one of its systems. A piece of data was changed which was used whenever an automated error check found invalid data in Facebook’s system. This piece of data was interpreted as invalid, which resulted in the system to try and replace it with the same piece of data.

This resulted in a feedback loop which created hundreds of thousands of queries per second getting sent to a database cluster, which couldn’t cope. This meant users were met with the DNS error message. Director of software engineering Robert Johnson said “The way to stop the feedback cycle was quite painful – we had to stop all traffic to this database cluster, which meant turning off the site,” “Once the databases had recovered and the root cause had been fixed, we slowly allowed more people back onto the site.”

Facebook have had to turn off the system to get the site up and running, but it plays an important role in protecting the website. They are now looking at ways to handle the situation differently to prevent it happing again. Johnson added “We apologize again for the site outage, and we want you to know that we take the performance and reliability of Facebook very seriously.”

This latest problem follows the site being down for some users the previous day, which was blamed on a third-party networking provider.

After the huge DNS failure that hit social-networking site Facebook a few hours ago, we have some good news for you now as it looks as if the problems have been fixed and users are now able to log into the site again.

As we told you earlier, the website was unavailable as users kept getting the message ‘service unavailable’ when trying to login. However, we’ve just tried the website a few times and we logged in successfully and at normal speed too.

At the moment, we still don’t have an exact reason for the downtime, but you can bet that Facebook will be clearing this up later today, since it is the second outage in the space of a few days so the issues are probably related.

What is your status at the moment? Can you login to Facebook or not?
