Facebook has been causing some controversy with its latest actions as it becomes the center of an up roar over their Facial Recognition feature which has just gone global. We recently brought you news of the problems the social network is facing over the service followed by news of an apology for failing to give enough notice before launching the face tagging service globally.

Today we have more news of a problem Facebook now faces as they are being investigated by the European Union over their Facial Recognition launch. The service which has been available in the US since last year was originally launched switched to off as default, meaning users may choose to switch it on or not.

Since its global launch however, the function has been turned to on as default meaning users would need to manually switch it off. This is where the problems arouse as the EU feel those users that are unaware of the service but wouldn’t want it on are having their data-protection rights breached.

A Luxembourg member of the Data Protection Working Party, Gerard Lommel says that such automatic tagging ‘can’t be activated by default’ as it ‘can bear a lot of risks to users.’ Check out the article at BusinessWeek for more about the EU’s issues with the service.

Do you think this is a concern or do you like the new function?
