We told you last month about users email accounts on TripAdvisor being hacked into, and today we have some more email accounts being hacked on some big US retailers. This follows a security breach at Epsilon, and concerns millions of email accounts.

An article by James on Empowered News is reporting more email addresses have been stolen by hackers from the likes of Best Buy, TiVo Inc, and Walgreen Co. the companies have confirmed that customer’s personal information that they hold has been compromised.

They use a service which is run by Dallas based company Epsilon, that also supplies around 2,500 companies nationwide. In a statement they said that an investigation would be taking place, and reassured customers that the data stolen was emails and names.

The retailers concerned have said that Epsilon contacted them about the hack and said the risk was small as only email addresses had been stolen. The email addresses could be used by the hackers to contact customers to try and get more personal information from them.

Other companies affected by the hacking include Kroger Co., and financial firm JPMorgan Chase & Co. JPMorgan have confirmed no financial information was involved in the data theft. Best Buy has warned customers to ignore emails requesting asking for personal details that may be used in identity theft. Barclays Bank also uses Epsilon and have again warned customers about rogue emails, but stated all of their credit card information is safe.

Customers who have used Disney Destinations should also keep a watch on their inbox, as they were also caught up in the email hack according to an article by Pete Werner on DIS Unplugged.

Does this security breach concern you?

If you are a member of travel site TripAdvisor you should check your inbox, as the site is warning its subscribers that its member database has been stolen.

Gareth Halfacree over at thinq is reporting that an unknown third party has stolen a ‘portion’ of its customer email database. The travel site has warned its users that they may see an increase in spam. TripAdvisor does not collect member’s details such as financial information or credit card details, or passwords.

Users have also been warned by TripAdvisor to be vigilant regarding phishing attempts, as the people responsible may try emailing users and trick them into revealing personal information. The site has told members it would never ask for such details.

TripAdvisor said in a statement that they have “shut it down and are vigorously pursuing the matter with law enforcement“. They added they will be improving security to prevent it happening again. The situation while embarrassing for the company, is not as bad as it could be as they do not store member’s personal information, so the attackers have less to play with.

Are you a member of TripAdvisor? And have you received the warning email from the company?

A lot of us send and receive many e-mails now days, and in the workplace e-mails have greatly improved the efficiency of how we work. No longer do you have to wait for the mail to arrive before getting on with important tasks. But due to the fact it is so easy to press the send button, can lead to e-mails being sent which may contain content that may not make sense to the receiver.

But there is help out there for people to achieve e-mail etiquette for the workplace. Kathleen G. Huertas has written an article with some e-mail etiquette tips and rules. One good rule is to think if you would be comfortable saying in person what you are planning to put in an e-mail.

Always try and keep your responses short and to the point. When writing an e-mail be careful in what you are writing, as any misunderstandings could cause future problems. When looking through your inbox try and respond to the important e-mails first.

Work Etiquette is a website which covers various subjects including how to write an e-mail to an external company. It is not a good idea to write an e-mail which is too long, and try not to use long rambling sentences. And a big mistake many people make is writing words in capital letters, it will seem like you are shouting. Once you have written your e-mail read it back to make sure it makes sense, and obviously use any spell check and grammar programs your e-mail program may have.

There is also a useful application available for owners of iOS devices. E-Mail Etiquette: Do’s, Don’ts and Disaster Tales. The app promises to have all the answers to e-mail questions you might have. There are loads of tips and advice contained in the app, and the application has been written by People Magazine’s Internet Manners, Samantha Miller. The App can be found on the App Store for $9.99. iOS 3.0 or later required.
