Who would have thought that one day the Smart Fortwo ED would get a dock to help upgrade it like you would with a smartphone. The new Dock+Go has been created by Rinspeed and turns your small EV into a six-wheeled mini-truck to not only give it more storage capacity but an increased range as well.

The vehicle itself is ideal for your everyday needs but for those who plan to travel a little further or wishes to purchase or deliver a few extra items, then the Smart Fortwo ED is not the vehicle for you. It’s for this reason why Rinspeed decided to give the small car another axle to make the electric Smart Fortwo appealing to a far greater market.

This add-on could be perfect for Pizza delivery companies or those of you who love to partake in winter sports. This is still in concept form and will be on show during the Geneva Motor Show next month, but we have to warn you that Rinspeed has teased us with concepts in the past only to leave us wondering why they never made it to production.

The Dock+Go is like an extra energy pack, which will either be fitted with extra batteries or a range extender. The third axle is said to drive the second axle and in doing so will also charge up the internal batteries on the car itself and what extra power you have left from the auxiliary batteries can even be used to power your home or you could sell it back to the national grid – in theory anyway.

The Dock+Go is not all about giving you a greater range but also about proving extra storage space and could be modified to keep those pizzas warm or other products cold. The new Fourtwo that will be docked with the concept rear axle will also have a few upgrades, such as a 12.1-inch monitor on the dash and a new Harman soundsystem with gesture control. We do hope to see this concept on the streets soon because it would be a crime not to see this make it to production.

Let’s say for arguments sake that the Dock+Go does become a reality how much would you pay for the two vehicles and what would you do if you had one?

With GM fully focused on the Chevy Volt, it has come as no surprise that both General Motors and Chrysler are to take on 1,000 engineers and researchers. They will not only be used for the new electric vehicle, but for next-gen EVs as well. This shows how well GM has done over the past year, so 2011 is looking good for the Detroit automaker.

Hiring is to start now and will be a process over the next two years, which should be perfect for when the Chevy Volt is fully in its stride with sales and customer awareness. Chrysler is to start taking on more staff in the coming months, as they aim to increase the size of their business.

The auto industry has been in a bad way for some time, so is nice to see that things have now started to pick up. Both GM and Chrysler were in bankruptcy last year, but it is the former who has turned its business around, the latter has finally managed to slow its loses.

GM has a lot riding on the Chevrolet Volt, and needs it to be successful, especially as they are selling it at “close to cost.” That’s according to their CEO Dan Akerson, which ABC News reported yesterday. Production for the Volt has now begun, which we will will discuss in a later post. There has been much speculation over the cars, is it an EV or is it an Hybrid? One thing we do know, its biggest rival will be the Nissan Leaf.

Do you think that GM is onto a winner with the Chevy Volt?

Driverless Car Technology: GM EN-V Prototype

The idea of driverless car technology is almost a reality now, we recently reported that Google had started trials of a car that drives themselves, and we can now tell you that General Motors has as well. The GM EN-V (Electric Networked Vehicle) Prototype goes one better than that though – it is foldable.

This City car is different in the way that it can tackle two problems at once; the first is that it does the driving for you, and the second is that it is foldable – so no worries about finding a parking spot. You still have to park the vehicle, but as it goes from 8-foot to five-foot – finding a place to park will become a much simpler task.

The General Motors EN-V is still a long way off, but at least we know that driverless car technology is progressing very well – just do not expect K.I.T.T from Knight Rider. The vehicle will use an advanced voice control system, much more advanced than those used today. Once you told your vehicle where you wish to go, it will then use new electric systems that have been built into the streets to navigate around.

This will be the ultimate EV, as it will have none of the devices used in today’s cars, such as brakes etc. We can be sure that GM is not the only company working on such a vehicle; the likes of Nissan will evolve their Leaf over time as well.
