The History of Easter eggs for gaming began back in 1980 when an Atari programmer begun making a video game of the original text adventure.

An in-depth article on GameSpotUK has looked at the history of video games with Easter eggs. They are mainly found in games as an award for unlocking a certain feature, which could sometimes be revealed by pressing certain button combinations.

A repeated trick in the Grand Theft Auto series gave you a small picture of an Easter egg for reaching the end of the games. With San Andreas you don’t actually get an egg, but are met with a message of there being none left and go away. Of course being in a Grand Theft Auto game the language is a little stronger.

Before gamers playing World of Warcraft could search the snowy parts for Easter eggs that are filled with candy, they could also try and find an Easter dress and suit. The old Sega Master System back in 1986 had its own Easter egg built into the system called snail.
