Panasonic’s range of Toughbook’s have been upping the anti in recent times, with reports that the “worlds lightest 12.1-inch laptop with DVD drive” is also very durable. Weighing in at just 3 pounds, we decided to check out the authenticity of the claim and research proves that the claims were true-say.

The S9 joins the also impressive Toughbook C1, that weighs in at just 3.2 pounds. But the most impressive features of the S9 is how they managed to squeeze a Core i5-520M processor, 2GB RAM, a shock mounted 320GB hard drive and an optical DVD drive for good measure into it’s featherweight laptop shell.

Impressed? Panasonic even go as far as allowing the Toughbook S9 to withstand being dropped from 2.5 foot whilst operating, at the same time as having a spill-resistant keyboard, and taking a maximum of 220 pounds of pressure on its lid and base.

If you are someone who wants a light, compact laptop with all the trimmings, but you also know that on your travels it can take a beating — this is the laptop of choice, until maybe you see the price.

We will get straight to the point, the Panasonic Toughbook S9 will slap your bank balance in the face with a $2,499 retail price. The only thing you have to do now is see if that kind of price justifies the purchase.

A press release with more pictures and information is scheduled soon, so that might help make your decision.

What are your opinions of the Toughbook S9?
