Digital cameras have come a long way in recent years including the devices that our smartphones now contain. More consumers have also been upgrading to digital SLR cameras as they become more affordable and cheaper to purchase. They have also become more advanced and have led a top London tourist attraction to ban the use of DSLRs.

According to an article over at Tech Crunch via Amateur Photographer, a sign has been put up outside an unused London Tube station banning the use of the cameras. Aldwych station that was originally called Strand closed back in 1994, but has recently began offering tourists tours for £20.

The sign that can be seen via the link says “Due to their combination of high-quality sensor and high resolution, digital SLR cameras are unfortunately not permitted inside the station”. Now it can be expected to see limitations in certain places, with flash photography not being allowed to be used on the Mona Lisa.

Aldwych station has been preserved and is south of Holborn in London and is now being used as a historical landmark. But it seems strange there is a ban on this type of equipment as many modern smartphones and compact cameras will give older DSLRs a run for their money with regards to image quality.

Modern top end compacts are also closing the gap on lower spec DSLRs as well such as the Fuji X 100. You can understand places such as music venues banning DSLRs to prevent individuals without a license earning money from images taken. But as the station is private propriety you have to abide by the rules that are set out.

Do you think the banning of DSLRs is too much for an old tube station?

A recent video that accompanied Sony’s launch of their new DSLR’s the A55 and A33 was set in a snowy scene. This could have been to keep the new cameras cool as there seems to be a problem with some of the new technology found on them.

Vlad Savov of Engadget is reporting that when using the cameras to shoot video for any longer than eleven minutes with the Image Stabilization on, and in temperatures of 20 degrees Celsius or more they overheat. On the A55 this happens even sooner after only nine minutes.

If the Image Stabilization is switched off the DSLR’s manage the maximum of almost thirty minutes of video footage. Sony has blamed this problem on the APS-C sized sensor found on the cameras. The problem is not limited to only Sony though, as Engadets own Nikon D5000 won’t last more than five minutes no matter what they try. This problem is not good if you buying them to regularly shoot video.

Following the news of Nikon’s new midrange DSLR the D7000, the new camera finds itself coming up against Canon’s recent new addition the EOS 60D. It also comes up against the Olympus E-3 since it has been superseded by the E-5.

Janice Chen of Zdnet is reporting that although all three cameras are priced reasonably close together the Nikon D7000 easily beats the three year old E-3, and also gives the 60D a run for its money. The new Nikon can’t match the 60D for video recording, but offers manual exposure control and continuous autofocus while shooting video.

The body of the D7000 is compact but a sturdy design, and is also like the E-3 in being dustproof and splash proof. The Nikon also has slots for two memory cards, where SD/SDHC/SDXC can be used. The Canon has the nice articulating LCD offering more flexibility when framing shots, but the Nikons optical viewfinder is superior to the 60D offering.

Use the link for the full review.

We told you yesterday about Nikon’s new D7000 DSLR the replacement for the highly regarded D90. Today we have some more news for you including a video review.

Richard Lai of Engadget is reporting that the 16.2 megapixel beast is aimed at the “social photographer” market. Engadget managed to get hold of an example to give it the once over, and mention it looks quite similar to the D90 but not as light. The continuous shooting button has been transformed into a secondary dial to the left of the unit.

Like the D3100 there is a new live view switch and video record button, which is preferred to the set up on the old D90. One of the best features is the EXPEED 2 image processor allowing for a much improved AF speed.

According to Devicemag the D7000 will be available from mid October in the US and will set you back $1199.95 for body only, and $1499.95. See below for the video of the D7000, and click here for a detailed review.

Hot on the heels of their new range of compact cameras, Canon have officially announced the replacement for their popular EOS 50D DSLR. The new Canon EOS 60D has had full 1080p HD video recording added to its list of features.

Techtree are reporting in an article that the new camera now comes with a massive 18 megapixel image sensor like the EOS 550D. A 3-inch swivel LCD display and the option of processing images within the camera itself are also available. The image sensor allows for higher levels of detail and 1.6 times magnification of the lens focal length.

There is also a DIGIC 4 image processor which can process four channel output for high speed 5 frames per second shooting. Images shot in low levels of light are improved by the ISO sensitivity range which is expandable to 12800. The new model will be able to use SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards for storing those images.

The Canon EOS 60D body only will be $1099 and there will be a range of lens kits, and available by the end of next month.
