If you own an Android handset other than the Galaxy Nexus, one of your main focuses right now is frantically searching the net to see if your handset will be granted an update to Google’s latest mobile software – Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.

There are a number of newish Android handsets that have already been confirmed to be getting an official update, the latest being the Samsung Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note, but there are also a growing collection of older Android handsets that have already been given an entry to Ice Cream Sandwich unofficially.

The latest handset to get an unofficial update to Ice Cream Sandwich is none other than the Motorola Droid X, and we’re pleased to say that this looks like a stable build as well and one which Droid X users can start downloading straight away. The build has been developed by FirstEncounter and you’ll find everything you need to get started over at RootsWiki here, as detailed by Droid-Life.

Features that have been confirmed to be working include the likes of data, SMS, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, the SD card and many more features. However, it’s important to point out that the camera isn’t working yet, nor is the ability to send MMS. The good news is that considering this is a working custom ICS ROM, you can bet that these features will be working in a future version of the build so if you don’t mind not taking pictures for the moment you should definitely give this a go.

Don’t forget that it is highly unlikely that the Droid X will be receiving an official update to Ice Cream Sandwich, so this route may be the only way of getting Ice Cream Sandwich on your device. Motorola will put priority on devices like the Droid RAZR and Droid 4, so bare that in mind if you are thinking of updating. If you are ready to download this, make sure you create a backup first and read through the instructions clearly through the link above. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

You may remember that earlier on this week we informed you that official Android 2.3 Gingerbread updates were finally on the way for the Motorola Droid X, Droid Pro and Droid 2 handsets. Well we have some even better news for you now, the Droid X update is coming at the end of this week.

The news follows various leaks about the forthcoming Gingerbread updates mentioned above, and as a result of this, Verizon has now come out officially and stated that the first update will be given to the Droid X.

You’ll be pleased to know that it will be made available this Friday, 27th May and it will be an OTA update weighing in at 112MB on your Droid X. The official build number will move to 4.5.596.MB810 and key changes include things like the Gingerbread UI enhancements (obviously), a handy download manager app, geotagging, improved battery life via Bluetooth, autofocus camera improvements and much more.

You can view the full list of changes in Verizon’s official document over at Droid Life here. Sadly, no news on when Gingerbread will be hitting the Droid Pro and Droid 2, but we’ll let you know as soon as Verizon make that official too – hopefully it will be next week!

Are you looking forward to the official Gingerbread update on the Droid X?

As reported from Phandroid, the following list is pretty big in terms of handset issues, but while Motorola state that these problems are not too widespread, they have certainly caused a fair amount of frustration for Droid X owners.

Official problems listed by Motorola include being stuck on the Motorola logo after rebooting, errors within the battery manager, random rebooting, WiFi connection issues, Music file playback problems and error messages when trying to play media.

Quite a big list don’t you think? The good news is that Motorola has acknowledged all of these problems, and they are currently working on a new patch update to sort it all out.

After previously informing you about various Motorola Droid X stock shortages, we’re pleased to confirm that Verizon has just updated their Droid X page online, with no signs of shipping delays.

The Droid X is arguably the most popular handset on Verizon, taking the mantle from the Droid Incredible which is now slightly outdated even after the Android 2.2 Froyo update.

If you head to Verizon’s Droid X page here, you’ll see that there are no ‘ships by’ date that was previously displayed on the site last week. It now means that Verizon has managed to fulfill all their backdated Droid X shipments, as well as free up room for new orders.

If you are still planning to buy one, it is available to buy for $569.99 off-contract, or $199 on a two year deal with Verizon. Full details can be found on Verizon’s listing for the device.

Are you still waiting for your Droid X to be delivered? If so, let us know your thoughts on this.

We have some some important information for those of you planning to pick up the T-Mobile G2 handset, as we have a full spec sheet for you to take a look at, which compares it against the Apple iPhone 4 and Motorola Droid X.

As reported from PC World, the T-Mobile G2 will be the carrier’s next flagship handset, and it’s also the direct successor to the G1. It will be the first handset to run on their new HSPA+ network, which promises speeds of up to 19Mbps in some areas in the US.

The question is though, does it do enough to beat the likes of the mighty iPhone and popular Droid X? A quick glance at the spec sheet and the answer which first greets me is ‘no’.

Firstly, the G2 has the slowest processor (800Mhz) compared to the iPhone 4 and Droid X which both have 1Ghz chips. Next is internal memory, as the G2 only offers a measly 4GB unlike the iPhone 4 which comes with either 16 or 32GB and the Droid X which comes with 8GB. However, you can increase the memory with an SD card so its not too bad.

The most requested feature in current smartphones is the inclusion of a front facing camera for video chats, and it is slightly disappointing to hear that the T-Mobile G2 won’t include one. The Droid X can be excluded since it is a pretty old handset now, but there are no excuses for the G2 – where is it?

If you are interested in picking up the device, I’d advise you to check out the full comparison of specs here. Let us know your impressions on the handset afterwards.

We have some disappointing news to bring you now, as it has been reported that many Droid X owners are suffering from audio problems after updating to the Android 2.2 Froyo update which went live recently.

As reported from EricTric, the issue doesnt appear to be widespread yet, but several users are complaining about sound cutting out, affecting general handset sounds as well as ringtones.

According to EricTric, Verizon are already aware of the problem and are ‘working on it’, but they didn’t give any indication on if a patch update would be coming shortly.

It seems as if the long-awaited update to Android 2.2 Froyo is a double-edged sword as some people are having a few problems after updating.

What is your current status at the moment? Can any of you confirm the audio problems, or do you have a different problem?

We have some important information for those of you trying to get your hands on a Motorola Droid X, but found stock was completely out, as Verizon has just given us a new release date for shipping.

As reported from Droid-Life, Verizon’s website confirms that all new Droid X handsets will be shipping on September 22nd. If you have purchased a handset from them recently, you should now receive it from next Wednesday onwards.

Verizon seems to be following a similar trend when it comes to low stock for Droid devices, as you may remember the Droid Incredible suffering a similar fate a few months after release – hopefully this won’t turn into the same situation with the Droid X.

We’ll let you know if we get more details on this. Have you ordered a Motorola Droid X in the last few days?

UPDATE: Verizon has added an extra day to shipping, so now you should expect it on the 23rd (Thursday). Check the latest updates on their website here.

Yesterday we told you how a leaked Verizon OTA update for the Droid X slipped out, but now we have a few details on the next official update from Verizon, one which will add the benefits of Android 2.2 Froyo.

The news come courtesy of Droid-Life, who have once again managed to obtain an internal Verizon document, which seems to suggest that the official update for the Droid X is finally upon us.

The document lists new features such as Adobe 10.1 Flash Player, 270 degrees screen rotation and automatic app updates. Furthermore, Droid-Life states that this document was created on September 10th, meaning that Verizon are definitely in the progress of preparing Froyo for release.

It looks like those of you who were not tempted to update to leaked copies are about to get rewarded. We’ll let you know if we hear any more details on this.

As reported from MyDroidWorld, the new update is a leaked OTA update from Verizon, and is only accessible for those who have already rooted their devices.
